Frugal Engagement Rings 🏆 Buy It For Life

I'm going to propose to my girlfriend. I'm thinking about something in the $1000-$1500 range.

How can I find an engagement ring at a good price and not get ripped off?

EDIT: I'm just going through all the responses now, and just wanted to say thank you so much for all the input I really appreciate it!!

When I was looking for the diamond my husband was going to give me when we got married I went to area pawnshops. I found it on a pendant. I’ve worn it in a bespoke ring for 13 years. It’s beautiful. My point is to look at pendants, earrings, etc. find the most beautifully cut diamond you can and have it set in a ring. This diamond I am talking about is a 1/2 carat VS1 diamond. It cost $300 because it was on an ugly gold nugget pendant and not in a ring. Find a good diamond and get a jeweler to set it in a simple ring that will show off the diamond. If you have any unwanted gold you can trade that in for credit towards the ring. I’ve repurposed so many pieces of unworn jewelry into things I love, doing just that.
