Frugal Engagement Rings 🏆 Buy It For Life

I'm going to propose to my girlfriend. I'm thinking about something in the $1000-$1500 range.

How can I find an engagement ring at a good price and not get ripped off?

EDIT: I'm just going through all the responses now, and just wanted to say thank you so much for all the input I really appreciate it!!

I'd chat with some of your local jewelers with good reviews and explain your budget. Sometimes they have an estate section with absolutely lovely rings and such that they've verified the quality of, or they can work with you on a Moisonitte ring. Ours had tons of options. I was told one of the best things you can look for is a place where the jewelery is never on like 50% off sale, because it means they aren't massively marking up their product.

Can't upvote enough. Go see a small local jeweler! They have catalogs of rings and can get any stones you want. Prices are reasonable and you will get personal service. If you can, visit more than one to find a jeweler you click with.

Holy fuck small jewelers are expensive. Just checked our local one man shop. Just a plain gold ring 4mm wide, no jewels. $2000-2500. To be fair, the diamond rings aren't that much more expensive 0.4ct @ $3000.

I could walk into the chain store and buy a gold ring for $400
