Announcement What constitutes spam on this subreddit.

Reddit has site wide rules regarding advertising and as a moderator I have to uphold those when moderating this subreddit.

With that said, Reddit is clear about how to assess if someone is a spammer:

How do I avoid being labeled as a spammer?

  • Post authentic content into communities where you have a personal interest.
  • If your contributions to Reddit consist primarily of links to a business that you run, own, or otherwise benefit from, tread carefully, or consider advertising opportunities using our self-serve platform.
  • If you’re unsure if your content is considered spammy or unwelcome, contact the moderators of the community to which you’d like to submit. Subreddits may have community-specific rules in addition to the guidelines below.

With this in mind, the subreddit policy going forward will be that if more than 50% of your contributions (comments and submissions) is promoting a book or review course the offending contribution will be removed. Attempts to circumvent this will result in bans.

I have nothing against review courses and books. I used them to pass my PE and FE exams. This is a community for people to collaborate and help one another achieve their career goals. That includes things like asking questions about your practice problems, or the exam format/experience, and yes asking what people recommend to study. But that last one is not a license for your account's sole existence on this subreddit to be only mentioning ABC's review course. The 50% threshold is much more generous than most subreddits would use to moderate content but I feel this is an appropriate level for this community.

If you have any feedback please feel free to comment below.

Tips Few Tips to FE Test Takers

Looking at posts in this sub, I can see that people mentioned that they did 1000+ questions, studied well but still failed. This may be controversial but I don't think this is the best way to study. You have to study fundamentals before hopping into numerical problems. They can be done parallely.

When you do questions before brushing up your concepts following things happen 1. You Solved it 2. Check answer 3. If correct move on 4. If wrong read solution.

If you read solution like this, you may be fooled that you understood the concept. But in reality, you just learned how to solve that specific question. If questions are twisted in the Test, you might struggle in exam and say, "well exam was different". This way is very close to remembering the pattern without understanding core concept.

Personally, I didn't do 1000+ Problems. I just went through theory and solved examples, and practice Problems. I did just one practice set from NCEES, that's it. Of course I did problems from YouTube and here and there, but my goal was never to hit x number of problems.

Everyone's way of study may be different and it may not be applied to everyone.

Finally I want to say this, If you wanna get ready for exam as soon as possible: Do a lot of practice problems

But you're goal is to knock out exam in first/next exam: Understand core concepts.

Good Luck!

Question FE Civil: What's the most challenging category?

I'm currently creating a website that includes all of the study content needed for someone to review the fundamentals.

But I want to know which categories people struggle with the most/which categories people are most likely to review before publishing my site.

I tried making a poll with Reddit but it didn't work. Please post your response in this Google Form and discuss below if necessary.

Question Michael Lindeburg, FE Civil

For FE civil, which one should I adhere to?

  1. FE Review Manual, 2nd edition

  2. 1001 solved engineering fundamentals problems, 3rd edition

Also, is "1001 solved engineering fundamentals problems, 3rd edition" a book for FE or PE? I want to make sure, I study only for FE exam for now.

In the last content of 800 Islam, there are difficult questions from all subjects. How much does the difficulty level of these questions resemble with that of actual FE civil exam? Is the real exam easier than that or harder than that or similar?

Question FE Electrical 1st attempt

I took the FE Electrical for the 1st attempt in June 2023. I felt unprepared taking the exam, and I was so stress walking into the exam room that I ended up losing my ID. Obviously, I was not let in the exam room. I sat in the car and cried for a bit before deciding to retrace my steps. After I retrace my steps, I still did not find my ID, but I found a janitor who said they found my ID in the bathroom. What a terrible way to start the exam.😭 I was 25 minutes late before even starting the exam. I have been studying, and I am retaking the exam in a month. I need my EIT to move up in my career. I graduated from college 7 years ago.

How close was I to passing?
Any last minutes study materials that will help me in the next 4 weeks?
I have the 2nd attempt in the first week in February. I am looking for the best practice material that closely resemble the exam's level of difficulty. I currently have the NCEES practice exam. That is it. I am considering PrepFE.

Anything else that you recommend?

Question FE Mechanical - Overwhelmed

I'm 3.5 yrs out of college and am taking my first attempt at the FE Mechanical Exam in one month. I have the Lindeburg Practice Problems but am quickly overwhelmed as it seems that a lot of the material in the practice problems isn't even referenced in the NCEES Reference Handbook. Is this a case on the actual FE test?

Does anyone have review sources that are helpful to essentially relearn a large range of material as the Lindeburg solutions are not doing it for me at this point.

Question Will NCEES release test scores New Year’s Day

I took the exam December 19th, and have been waiting for my exam results back. I’m sure most people here know how stressful that is. I saw someone comment that NCEES would release exam results Jan 1, is that true? Really would suck to wait another week to Jan 8. Thank you!

Question FE Handbook

I have a pdf file of FE Handbook. I am using it in Microsoft edge. The issue I am having is, when I search word in the search box, it does not direct me to the location where the words are located, although the words exist in the Handbook. This happens with me every single time. I feel like, almost 80% of the time, it doesnot direct me to the word I am looking for, and only 20% of the time, it directs me. Where am I lagging behind or what's going on? Please enlighten me. Help me, please.

Also, whoever took the FE exam, in what browser is the Handbook available? Is it Microsft edge or Chrome or what?

Tips FE Mechanical - scheduled

I’ve been a lurker here for a bit, thought id just share this and see what people think.

Scheduled my exam for 3/5/25

Study plan:

Starting 1/1. Every day. 1 hour with Lindeburg 1 hour with Prep FE cards and section tests 1 hour Prep FE practice exam

1/15-2/20: My school offers a review course which I signed up for, Wednesday and Thursday evenings for 2 hours. These days I’ll do a 1 hour Prep FE practice exam afterwards.

Midway through the class, early February, take the full lindeburg practice exam Analyze and look over trouble sections Then take the NCEES e-book practice exam, again, analyze and look over trouble sections. Take NCEES interactive practice by end of February. Analyze and spend a few more days with any trouble sections.

Closest testing center is 40 miles away, so I already booked a nice hotel room down the street from the center for the night before to relax (hot tub) have a nice dinner and get a solid night’s rest and breakfast before heading over to the exam.

Any other suggestions from those pioneers who have passed?
