I broke my wrist and don't know anybody up here Meetup
Howdy new neighbors! I'm having surgery Thursday for a broken wrist. I got rides arranged to and from, but I'm going to be off work for a couple of weeks with nothing to do, nowhere to go, and no friends to kill time with. I need a right-hand man... literally.
I doubt I'll be up to much fun one-handed, but I'm in a pretty fragile emotional state and need some people willing to be a makeshift support network. Need a Netflix binging partner? A beta reader for your novel? A charitable cause for the winter holiday season? I might be your girl!
About me: I'm a 33 F, tragically heterosexual nurse from Texas. Fully vaccinated and fairly left of liberal, and brand new to the area (hence not knowing anyone). Please hit me up! And if you need favors in about 6 weeks, I'm happy to help you out as well. Sorry to come in begging; I'm used to being the one offering help, not asking for it

Know what you should do? Have them just remove the hand and put a hook on where it used to be. Then some rough and tumble pirates with hearts of gold would absolutely take you in to become part of their pirate crew. Instant company, lots of mayhem and adventures and job security. Pirate ships are always in need of medics.

If they have a hook for their pistol holding hand can they even pull the trigger? Or hold the gun? It would have to be a very fancy hook.

I got you. I work from home and sew. And I can always use company. Usually watching Netflix while I do it. My "to watch" list is really just a rewatch list so kinda boring what's on yours?

u/Secret-Vee Dec 07 '22 edited Dec 07 '22
Oh and nearly 32 F. Born here and lived in Texas for 5 years or so. But came back because well Oregon. I've had my shots as well.
1
u/Garage_Woman Dec 07 '22
…… what’s your “to watch” list?
1
u/Secret-Vee Dec 07 '22
I've got some rewatches: shameless(I'm half way through), black summer, the 100, OITNB. The new to me are originals, last kingdom, a model family, echoes, the old ways, etc.
2
u/Garage_Woman Dec 07 '22
Good lord. Shameless lol. It’s like watching my childhood. My dad was frank.
Black summer… not watched that… old ways… hmmmmmmm sounds promising.
And you sew!!!! I’m trying to get into that hobby. I have a singer treadle, a necchi supernova, and a babylock serger. And I’m trying to restore a very very rusted singer model-20 handcrank. See post history.
2
u/Secret-Vee Dec 07 '22
Yeah some how watching shameless helps me process some of my own childhood traumas.
Ya into zombies?
Heck yes. Been at it for almost 25 years now. I love watching new sewers get hooked. I also have a lead for someone about destash a lot of fabric! We(my mom and I) have a couple of machines we've been trying to fix up too. Nothing quite so amazing.
What are some projects you're planning to make?
2
u/Garage_Woman Dec 07 '22 edited Dec 07 '22
Right? It’s cathartic almost.
Do I like zombies! Yeah! I love all that is spooky.
Ohhh myyyyyyy tempting. But I already have so much fabric and I haven’t sewn a thing. I’m one of those “get fully set up like I’m deep in the hobby before I even start” kinda people. Nothing quite so amazing?!? All machines are amazing in their way!
I have patterns for a dramatic goth jacket I yearn to make, but I think I should start a little more simple. Like maybe make some bralettes or pjs. I’ve been hand sewing minor things for over a decade. But never full clothing from scratch and no machine/ pattern experience. Ideally I’d like to totally replace my wardrobe with natural fabric stuff.
Ever since I realized plastic clothing melts and stays on your skin when on fire, I’ve been fixated on moving away from synthetics. Rational I know. I plan on being on fire a lot and I want to be prepared.
2
u/Secret-Vee Dec 07 '22
Yes it sorta is.
All things spooky is my jam.
That's how I roll too. I've got 20 different kinds waiting for my next project. We've got a couple sergers and other machines.
I jumped right in with a full blown cloak as my first real project. Used to make purses, just simple ones. I'm definitely down to he'll if you want to try it!
3
u/Garage_Woman Dec 07 '22
Ohhh jeeze… I would love a sewing buddy! I’m trying to convert my dining room into a sewing room. I just need to get some shelves up and some themed witchy wall art and I’ll be ready to get going. Well, I also have an antique cast iron stove I wanna add a table top to so it can be my cutting table with storage for my ironing tools.
I only have one other friend who sews, but she lives in another town and has three young kids sooooooooo, much too busy for hobby hang out days. What’s your latest sewing project? Purses sound cool! (You into embroidery? Or frogs? https://www.tiktok.com/@historicembroidery/video/7170433688684006662?_t=8Xw9H8YtMdv&_r=1 ) Part of why I wanted vintage machines is so I could sew heavy duty stuff like bags or something.
2
u/Secret-Vee Dec 08 '22
I'm always looking for sewing friends. Help keep me motivated too lol. My whole house at any given time is my sewing studio.
I've hand embroidered. And one of my machines that needs repair is an embroidery machine.
2
u/Garage_Woman Dec 08 '22
oOoOoOoO what kind of embroidery machine!! The entire reason. I got the necchi supernova was all the incredible embroidery stitches it can do.

What's :"tragically heterosexual"?
Is that a new pronoun?
27
u/SantaClaws1972 Dec 06 '22
Perhaps every hetero relationship they have even been in has ended in tragedy? Perhaps a series of unfortunate events have unfolded.
30
u/oldswirlo Dec 07 '22
Yes and Eugene is the worst place on earth to be a tragically heterosexual female (ask me how I know).

u/avclub1005 Dec 07 '22
Isn’t it a line in Parks and Rec? Someone asks Leslie and Ann if they’re together and Leslie replies no, they are tragically heterosexual, she might say sadly… and I might be seeing a reference where there isn’t one lol
2
u/somewhatfriendlyuser Dec 07 '22
tragically heterosexual
Thanks for the insight!
Never got a chance to watch Parks and Rec.
9
u/Bowsandtricks Dec 06 '22
Tragically in the way that women are attractive, but not people they view as good fits for sexual or relationship partners?
8
u/LokiBonk Dec 07 '22
I think it means being an amazing, lovely woman who continues to want and pursue the half-ass dudes who happen to be around. Ya know, because dicks.

u/serpentine1337 Dec 06 '22
Maybe they have a Greek tragedy fetish? Maybe they tried to turn gay and realized that's not a thing?

I'm so bad at keeping up with the friends I already have that I don't know if I'd make a very good support network person, even if it's temporary. However, feel free to dm me - we do have some things in common (I think) but I don't want to describe myself in detail here.
Also, check out your local Buy Nothing Group on Facebook (I can help you figure out which one is yours), and also check out a group on FB called "Lane County Mutual Aid".
I do watch a lot of TV due to chronic illness so I'd be down to try to arrange a streaming session sometime.
Hope your surgery on Thursday goes well!
Edit: also, I sprained my ankle last year and had a heck of a time finding a decent physical therapist. I finally did, but it took three tries. The folks I landed on were unbelievably awesome and caring once I did find them. I cried on my last day. I'm on OHP, so idk if that is relevant, but they take it if you have it too (they also accept other insurances).
The therapists I worked with were Ruggie and Jessica.

I stalked you a little bit and honestly you seem kinda my speed. Though I am ashamed of how few books I read lately.
Want to snark through one of those hbo dramas like sharp objects, or need help with errands during the day? It also seems like you'd understand the humor in taper candles and decorative squash and I appreciate that.

u/SweetPotatoDragon Dec 07 '22
If you find joy in the nerdier things in life I’d point you towards the Geek Girls of Eugene discord. It’s a really sweet/fun community and we have a few events/meetups planned! https://discord.gg/Nd4UKEah

u/NoTimeForLubricant Dec 07 '22
Did they have a crafting event on saturday? I saw a group that sounds like them on Meetup, but didn't make it as I was busy breaking bones instead
5
u/SweetPotatoDragon Dec 07 '22
Yep, the very same! There are also events that aren’t so hands-on too though lol. I’m sorry about your wrist and I wish you a swift recovery!

u/aikenndrumm Dec 06 '22
You may like using the bumble bff app! It’s like a dating app, but for making friends. I feel really bad swiping left on someone on a friends app but sometimes you just know it’s not a fit haha. I have made a wonderful group of friends via bumble bff.
Best wishes on your recovery!

Hiya, 31F here and while my schedule looks pretty crazy with work and the holidays the next few weeks, I'm up for being a phone buddy with ya. Down to chat during the days and maybe we can get a game of Words with Friends or something going to help keep you entertained. :) Feel free to send me a message. Good luck with surgery!

You should get discord. And friends and family can watch online with you. Pandemic made me lonely and depressed and using discord has helped me

u/popjunky Dec 07 '22
I drive Grubhub in the evenings. If you want to tag along, conversations are fun!
2
u/popjunky Dec 07 '22
(I have tagalongs regularly with my parents/kid and sometimes my partner. Housing costs are terrible at best, and I have to keep moving to keep us afloat.)
I’m also pretty dang lefty. 41 / N (it’s on my license even). Former aspiring musician and podcast junky. Big on board games. Fantastic shuffler. Prefer interesting sci-fi to fantasy. Jack of all trades, especially the ones I haven’t tried before. Queer in most of the ways and spoken for.

WELL!!
I did some proper snooping on your profile.
[insert old Greg “I like you what do you think of me?” clip]
What kinda of friend are ya looking for? I have a parrot, so it’s difficult for me to go off to places and leave her home alone in a cage. I’m a stay at home parront and chronic homebody. But I have an abundance of time/support/ attention to give to someone who’s interested. I’m brave enough to host if you wanna get out and change your setting.
Vaccinated/liberal/ in a het relationship/ born and raised here but most of my friends have moved away for work so I’m in the market for new buddies.
2
u/NoTimeForLubricant Dec 07 '22
Parrots and hedgies? We definitely need to hang out!
3
u/Garage_Woman Dec 07 '22
SEVEN hedgies!
My garage is an animal room. Birds have the air, hogs have the ground. Kinda. They’re in hogitats.

Just the fact you would ask that last question, shows that you’re worthy.
I’ve been in a bit of a depression slump tho. So I’ll definitely need to tidy up the place before any real humans are permitted to see it. There’s bird seed and cobwebs all over the place. And way too many half started and never finished random projects. Truly a mess.

Thanks! Also snooping shows you have a LO? They’re more than welcome to join us, so no stress about finding a sitter or something if that’s a thing. I’m childfree myself, but don’t mind them around.
I will add, I also have two cats (one will probably hide while company is over) and two dogs (ones an elderly ween who stays upstairs with my partner and the other is a sweet as can be whippet.) but I’m more than willing to tuck them away if either of y’all aren’t down with the full critter experience. The parrot is clingy as hell and will scream if I’m not in the room with her. So, she’s a non optional inclusion lol, she’ll just stay perched on me and nap probably.
But also probably a coffee date before any of us go into a strangers house/ have strangers over? Meet and greet. Vibe check. There’s a fantastic food cart area near me. Friendly neighborhood zone. They have heaters and seating.

Well, your reddit name just went from NSFW to NSFL.

I’m essentially your cool auntie. Also a nurse; got two smallish girls and a husband. I will binge whatever you want. I’m off on Tuesdays and would be down to hang. I’ll even bring food.

Where be yah from in Tejas? I once lived down yonder. It’s decades ago, though; and I ain’t goin’ back, nohow.
So where’s’bout you living up here in Orygun?
You got a horse’n’buggy fore to ride?
Actually, I don’t understand. Maybe, you can tell me more about what you enjoy.

u/antonistute Dec 07 '22
I was in your situation a few months ago. Moved up here a year ago for a person, but we broke up, I got into an accident, and broke my clavicle within the same week. I was concussed, incapacitated, had no friends and family to support me, all while emotionally processing the break up.
I'm doing SO much better now emotionally and physically, but I really empathize with what you're going through.
I'm 25M from California. Liberal and work in education (LCC employee). If you're in need of some help in any way, I'd love to be there for you. Walks on the river path kept me sane during my recovery and having a companion for that is nice I also really would have appreciated home-cooked meals. I'm getting back into cooking with my returned mobility

u/hurricanekeri Dec 07 '22 edited Dec 07 '22
Do you like to smoke pot and do crafts? 36 f not tragically heterosexual but I’m respectful. I am disabled so I’m home a lot.
1
u/themattimusmaximus Dec 07 '22
Hit me up of you feel like you need to, you've gotten a lot of responses. I'm a pretty normal mid thirties dude that plays video games and watches TV. I'm done with finals and I have no job and I will be alone for Christmas this year. I'm not sure what I'm doing for the next few weeks until winter term starts back up. So I have time on my hands for whatever.
