Can it also be don’t turn on your brights if you are driving towards someone time? I swear, the combo of the new super bright headlights plus people turning their brights on is more dangerous than people think.

I would dearly live to outlaw those ridiculously bright led headlights. Or at least require that they be aimed correctly instead of directly into my retinas.

Same. I drive a fairly small, low car and in the winter just drive with my side mirrors aimed to the ground so trucks and SUVs dont blind me.

Those lights blind from every direction. I drive a mid-size pickup and I have the same problem.

I mean, there has to be a point where the effectiveness of super bright lights is cancelled out by the fact that everyone else around them is being blinded, right?

YES!!! Especially when it is your regular beams that people are supposed to be able to see past.

I think that's why they keep getting brighter

You can even tell they have them when driving behind, if you see it’s night time behind them but looks like fucking daylight in every direction right in front of their car.

Me too, but it's actually getting better now, the trucks are getting high enough that even stock pickups actually have the bottom of of their headlights above my roof, so we've transcended. Also, I will die in a gentle fender bender.

I also drive low, small car. Look into getting the blue tinted mirrors(can’t remember what they’re called right now). They help with glare from people with the sun as headlights.

The newer Subarus are like this- I drive one and I fucking hate it. Folks flash their brights at me and I feel terrible because I used to drive a lower-to-the-ground car and these lights genuinely feel dangerous. I called the dealership and they said that 1) they won’t adjust them, 2) if I adjust them, it will void my warranty, and 3) “if people flash their brights at you, just flash your brights back to let them know we’re living in the new era of LED headlights” - quoted verbatim lmfao. So gross. What can I do?

Squidilus, I have been trying to reach you about your car's extended warranty

Cool because everyone can afford a new car /s

I'm sorry that you have to feel like a jerk when driving, that is such an obnoxious response. Was it from Kendall?

7

u/Squidilus Nov 02 '22

Right?? It icked me out. Yeah, it was at Kendall, about two years ago. :/ Whenever my warranty is up, I plan to have the headlights angled lower.

u/puppyxguts Nov 02 '22

Glad to know that they're jerks and I won't be buying from them. Also, I meant jerk not jersey lol

Adjusting your lights voids your warranty?? That’s crazy.

Can you go spend $40 on new non led headlights to put in your car? It's pretty simple to change a bulb in a vehicle.

Most folks don't know that retrofitting LED bulbs into old headlight lens housings designed for halogen bulbs doesn't work out great because the LEDs radiate light in a different manner and blind oncoming drivers.

2

u/JejuneEsculenta Nov 02 '22

I mean, it's already required, by law, that they be appropriately aimed.

The problem isn't the brightness of the LEDs or the even brighter HIDs. The problem is people retrofitting them into headlight housings that are not meant for them. There are two types of headlight housings, reflectors and projectors. Reflectors are the old type and are meant for halogen bulbs. Projectors are the new type and are meant for use with HIDs or LEDs. Projectors have a built in cutoff to prevent the light from blinding people. If you were to shine the light from a projector against a wall you would see a distinct horizontal cutoff of the light. Reflectors don't have that cutoff so they just blast blinding light everywhere. That should absolutely be illegal. Also a problem is vehicles that have been raised so much that the headlights are at the level of your eyes, but that is not as common as people using the wrong bulb in the wrong housing.

Oh I know those are an issue, but I very much doubt every single dudebro with a brand new truck is rushing out to get the wrong bulbs for their truck.

Confirmed data point of one, but my dad's truck is 100% unmodified, stock headlights, and still blinds the shit out of me. But it's also a monster with headlights above my head level when I'm sitting in my little beep beep car, so maybe not a great data point.

The new model of volvos is super blinding too, despite being a thin line of LEDs.
