What amenities do you wish Eugene had? Something to do
For the sake of breaking up the monotony of this sub’s typical posts, what are some amenities you wish we had here? I don’t care if they are unrealistic for the population. I’ll go first: Top Golf and go karts. I don’t want to drive 1.5-2.5 hrs for those up in Wilsonville and Hillsboro more than once a year, and would go to both a many times a year if they were local! Do not mention Swing Suite; I won’t try it since it seems like expensive Wii golf lol!
I searched the sub for a post similar to this and didn’t find one. If there is, I didn’t want to spend more than 15 seconds scrolling for it😆
Edit: The intent of this post is FUN- unrealistic or not. I totally get the valid qualms with Eugene’s problems but that is discussed daily on this sub. I said break up the monotony. For the most part everyone has been great about this and listed some excellent ideas. Please keep this fun and positive and save your grievances for the other posts in this sub that give you this opportunity daily!

More riverfront dining. A bocce ball court. A hospital with a psych unit.
18
u/Bonkisqueen Oct 04 '24
We have a hospital with a psych unit though?
67
u/Right-Holiday-2462 Oct 04 '24
We don’t even have a hospital.

u/Bonkisqueen Oct 04 '24
The University District hospital’s inpatient psych unit never closed. It operates under Riverbend’s license now, but is in the same downtown location and is full of patients.

This. I live in deep west Eugene.. I can get to Riverbend in 12 minutes. Faster than I could ever get to University District (UD). Not to mention UD was a glorified staging area for Riverbend.. if you really had something wrong with you, you were being sent to Riverbend anyways. It’s not as dramatic of a loss as people make it out to be.

A heated wave pool so that I could surf without having to drive to the coast and deal with frigid shark infested waters.
16
u/Low-Obligation7326 Oct 04 '24
Oooh I’ve never thought about that. A place with wave riders like on the Royal Caribbean cruise ships (or one big surf wave pool like you’re suggesting) would be so dope! I don’t think the ones on the cruise ships are heated… that would be way better.

Even LTD buses to the airport would be something
13
u/Eugenonymous Oct 04 '24
That route just doesn't make sense, though. Too much staffing for irregular ridership. There aren't a lot of midday flights so you need like a 4am driver for a couple hours, then a 6-11 driver, and occasionally in the middle of the day. They tried it and it just did not work. They hardly have enough drivers for the routes in town, so keeping two or three drivers busy on a low usage route would be a hard thing to sell.

24
12
u/treehugger503 Oct 04 '24
Willamalane swim center has one. It’s warm and shallow. They call it the “warm pool.” Lots of elderly and injury recovery people there.
They also do kayak flipping practice in that pool some nights.
9
u/itisnot_me Oct 04 '24
Dude screw that place. I was trying to go during free swim in that pool in order to relax my back after back fusion, and the life guards told me that I'm not allowed to float on my back in a lane. I was not interrupting anyone or cutting people off and they still told me no. I had to call the head office to see if I was in the wrong and they agreed that I was not. It was fricken open swim.
7
u/treehugger503 Oct 05 '24 edited Oct 05 '24
There are two pools there that aren’t the lap pool though. I wouldn’t write an entire place off because of one poor experience. Willamalane is really great.
Edited to add:
Willamalane Swim Center has 3 pools plus a hot tub.
- lap pool
- deep water pool
- shallow warm water pool
- hot tub
What the prior commenter wanted to do would be very accepted in the warm water pool or deep pool.

4
u/onefst250r Oct 05 '24
The economy killed it.
In May 2008, the park announced that due to higher insurance costs and a slowing economy that the park would not open for its usual season of Memorial Day to Labor Day in 2008.[3][5] The park also said that Thrill-Ville USA may not ever re-open.[1][6] Thrill-Ville has since been completely demolished.

Honestly a free to play arcade, like a place where you pay for the hour or the day and the games and machines are set to free to play. I love the places we have like Level Up, but I’d stay longer and be more willing to spend money on stuff like drinks and snacks.
8
u/Berekhalf Oct 04 '24 edited Oct 06 '24
I was visiting my partner in portland and there was this arcade that had a $5 upfront/cover cost, and you had to charge the card (a la
Level UpRound 1) and the games costed like 10 cents per play, even that would be a good middle ground. It feels like games at Level Up sometimes cost an entire dollar, which feels a bit excessive(though I havent been in a year). For just 4 more dollars I can get a full on arcade-like game that I've sunk tens of hours in instead of tens of minutes.

Gluten free fish and chips place, reminiscent of Corbett fish house which closed in Portland in 2020. (If no one else does it, one of my retirement pipe dreams is to open a GF fish cart. Eugene needs more casual dining. Yeah, I get it, we have a lot of quirky hole-in-the-wall joints that operate out of an old boot store or whatever. But sometimes you just want a nice Sunday lunch that's dependably decent and not served on some hipster wheat grass cheese board.
In Eugene, that basically means Olive Garden, Red Robin, Red Lobster, BJs, or Texas Roadhouse. Applebee's in Springfield.
Offhand, here's a few national chains we lack:
Cheesecake Factory
Buca di Beppo's
Chili's
Longhorn Steakhouse
Carrabba's
Famous Dave's
22
u/madqueen100 Oct 04 '24
Many of us prefer avoiding chain restaurants who use premade dishes made in central kitchens halfway across the country, are delivered frozen to be reheated, and all taste like the plastic they came in.
