My dumpster diving list I created with 6 years of experience. Feel free to add.
I was a vagabond for 6 years, I hitchhiked, hopped freight trains and bicycled North America from Mexico to Alaska, east coast to west. I learned all of this on the way and figure it's time to share it.
Food:
🍕- all pizza places throw out pizza at 12-2am. It's a dumpster staple. [Yes pizza is still in the box, I wouldn't eat it otherwise]
🍩 - all donut shops (including places like kolache factory) throw out at 2-4pm. [They usually put all donuts into one bag by themselves]
🍗 (fried chicken) - actually very common, also a staple. Usually throw out is around an hour after they close which varies from place to place. Anything fried in bulk you can expect to find throw outs. [Usually still in boxes]. Also, if you're feeling brave enough, after closing hours, just go ask. Fast food workers don't get paid enough to g.a.f. and they get tired of eating their own food, so they don't want to take it home themselves. Just walk up and say "hey, do you guys happen to be throwing out any leftover chicken from today?". I've gotten a week's worth of chicken just handed to me through the window or they'll leave it in boxes on top of the dumpster so you don't have to dig.
🍎 🥗 (produce) - grocery stores (time varies, but you also have to find places without a compactor. Some compactors you can break into but it's luck of the draw).
🍬 🍫 🍭 (candy, junk food, snacks) - CVS & Walgreens. They're the reigning Champs of throwing out hundreds of $ worth of candy a day. I kind of try to keep from telling people this one because you could get diabetes in like a week if you tried to eat it all. It's horrendous.
👕 👖 🩳 (clothes) - Washaterias or laundromats. People are infamous, especially in rich areas, for washing a load of laundry and then just leaving it, never to return. The laundromat workers will just gather the clothes and toss them, as they're pretty use to it. I've filled up a whole wardrobe on several occasions with expensive brands just by looking for a sack of already washed and dried laundry in the dumpster.
🛋 🖥 (furniture)(electronics)(decorations) - College towns, (Christmas & Summer break - these seasons are known as "Crustmas" in the dumpster diving community) anywhere students notoriously live. You can even find anything else your looking for really. College kids are the biggest dumpster diving source in history.
📚 books and comic books - Half Priced Books or any resale book store. I've accidently fallen asleep in dumpsters before because I drifted off while laying on top of all the hundreds of books while reading. Not even kidding, there isn't even any room for trash, they have dumpsters that are full to the brim with just books.
❓️(Wild card) - Are you feeling lucky punk? - hotels are the biggest oddball dumpster diving experience you'll ever have. You can find drugs, clothes, anything that someone would bring in a suitcase. People get shit-faced drunk and stumble out of their hotel with a hangover leaving 1/2 their belongings behind. It's kind of scary some of the stuff you'll find...(sex toys, etc. ). The cleaning service ladies get first dibs obviously and rightfully so, for what they have to put up with, lol.
Raw materials: --------
🪵Wood : Construction site dumpsters at expensive locations. Ask for permission from the contractor. Contractors are a mixed bunch, sometimes they'll say yes sometimes no.
⚙️🔩🔗Metal : machine shops - you can honestly just call these guys and 1/2 the time they'll let you onto their property and take what you want from the scrap bin. I'm 3 for 3 just by calling and asking politely for scrap.
🔨Tools - Harbor Freight tools, the return rate on tools at harbor freight is INSANE. So many people will buy a tool, use it one day and return it slightly bent or scratched. Most sites have a compactor but every now and then you can find with a regular dumpster. If so, you can score some pretty good tools. (Or mediocre tools for that matter lmao)
🗑 🚮 🗑 🚮 🗑 🚮 🗑 🚮 🗑 🚮 🗑 🚮 🗑 🚮 🗑 🚮
Protip 1- Dumpster diving is all about schedule. Sometimes places only throw out the quality items once a month, sometimes they purge their inventory only seasonally, or sometimes it's daily. Finding out those routines is the key and all you have to do is probe the spot every now and then to figure that out; or if you know someone who has worked there before, ask. The better you know a schedule, the less time your loot sits in the dumpster/air temp/outside environment for someone else to find or for it to spoil.
2 - Heavy bags usually have the goods. In the end I could just feel the outside of a bag and then weigh it a bit. With knowledge about the store, the schedule, feel and weight, I would already know what's inside.
3 - consistent dumpster diving will get you fit. The more you climb the more you find.
4 - GEAR: • Headlamp • closed toe shoes (for when you get inside the dumpster) • gloves • a big box or bag for your car to chunk stuff in. • hand sanitizer
🌟 5 - Clean up after yourself, if you leave a place a mess they will begin locking the dumpster. You'll ruin the spot for yourself and everyone else. This is the #1 reason why store owners tend to be against it 🔒
- ... get good at holding your breath while doing cardio 😂

New to dumpster diving- my lessons learned
galleryI saw everyone’s posts about going to JT Less yesterday- just so happens I needed to make a return there today and thought I’d take a quick peek. I got all of this stuff around noon today (Saturday) and did not bring any equipment with me as it was an impulse decision I made while in the check-out line. I’ve only DD’d a couple of other times with little luck in other stores and am hoping to learn more and go more often when I have the time and more proper equipment. This is my haul from today (only spent about 5 minutes there).
After sanitizing everything, and sorting out things that are broken, I am left with: A working mug and mug warmer (said NOT working on the box- guess what babe it works great ☺️) An essential oil diffuser A tension shower curtain rod A nice white nightstand/side table (a few minor blemishes and the bottom comes off of the pegs, but will be good as new with some wood glue) Lazy Susan and ramekin set A nice wooden cutting board One really cute glass mug (set of 2- one was broken) 3 new glass storage canisters (set of 4- one was broken) 1 really cute bowl (set of 3, 2 broken) Christmas tree shaped glass honey jar (says it has the stir rod but it is missing) 2 garden art angels, minor blemishes/cracks Brand new 10-ft long USB-C cord Shiatsu Deep Tissue Vibration Foot Massager (box has a little ding) Christmas Themed Sugar and creamer set (the top of the sugar canister is missing) Small trampoline in the box 2 dog treat makers (not pictured) Small lamp (haven’t seen if it works yet)
I am astounded and what these big stores will just throw away. I know none of these things are essentials for people but it just shows that consumerism runs rampant in this country with no regard for the environmental toll it takes. I bet there were tons of other cool things I left behind there, however it was getting pretty dangerous because the more I dug the more glass and ceramic items I found that were broken. I cut myself a small bit on my thumb, washed it off really well and put neosporin/bandaid on it when I got home. My coat and my car all have a faint but unmistakable smell of buttered croissants from my adventure now 🤷♀️
Be prepared Bring your safety equipment (like I foolishly didn’t) to minimize injury and sickness Down with big companies

Check those dumpster hard drives. A man is trying to recover a hard drive containing $750 million of bitcoin from a landfill.

Do ALL Ulta's destroy products before dumping?
I've been to two so far. All curling iron cords were cut, makeup products were dumped, lids removed, shampoo bottles cut in half and dumped over everything.
Makes me sick. They could just damage everything a little to avoid ppl returning dumped items instead of making it unusable and totally wasting it 👎

Found two of these badboys today
galleryFound these two electric scooters behind a dumpster today! Neither are charged so I’m going to see if I can find a charger for them. They retail $300 each brand new. Right now, they work like regular scooters and are very durable (please don’t hit my ankle). Now my husband and I can keep up with our kids 😂 What’s your latest favorite find!?

What do you do if there are cameras?
I’m an absolute lurker and never DD as an adult. Sister got her entire dining room table set out of a dumpster decades ago. What do you all do when there are cameras? My gym is in a strip mall but there’s a few food stores and nails and spas there. All have cameras above the doors in the back. I don’t think I have the guts to actually follow through to get out of my truck and do more than look. How do you feel about this when you come across cameras?

How often do you find sensitive information in the dumpster?

Best place to sell your finds?
What's your preferred platform to sell your finds?
I haven't had much luck with marketplace or FB groups.
I know there's Poshmark, Ebay, Craigslist & Mercari. Can anyone share their experience or recommend others?
I've heard Ebay is too risky because people can say they never got the package or whatever and keep your item for free.?
I already use DD to save on food, toiletries, etc. I work full time, have a second job, and am struggling to pay my medical bills that keep piling up 😞

Spreadsheets/data logs
I want to make a spreadsheet for stores with dumpsters/compactors, days trash gets picked up, days/times I go and what I find, etc
I already have all the info in a long note in my phone, but I want to lay it out in a way that's organized and easy to read from a glance
💖If you've done this, please post a pic. Feel free to block out your actual data or just send a template. I just need ideas for the layout.💖

Not exactly dumpster diving
galleryIf you can find a Redbox machine that hasn't been hauled away yet, then you can "rent" the DVDs and blu-rays three at a time. You need to put in a zip code, you can skip the part that asks for an email and then you need to use any credit card or debit card, you won't be charged at all. Even if the card is canceled, it'll still work.
The first picture is all the adult movies I've pulled out of two red boxes in the past few days. The second picture is all the kids movies, I only took one of each of what I thought my fam would watch. All of these Redbox machines were headed for a landfill so it feels good to get some free physical media and also put them to use.

Craft store dumpster dives
Does anyone dive at craft/hobby stores? If so, what advice do you have?
Thanks in advance!

We estimated over 1000 candy canes and didn't even grab all of them. All were outside the dumpster with more inside.

Anybody ever dive cash money?
It happened to me twice....once I found about $8 in bills rolled up in among a bunch of miscellaneous household trash. Another time, I followed the advice of another diver I met at the recycling center....she told me to go to one of those car wash and vac places late at night, the bigger the better, and go around to all the vacuums and open up the canisters and dump all the dirt into some buckets and take it home. They are full of change!! The first time I did it for fun and got another $8 or so in random change.

What do you folks do when you find mail or legal docs?
I always try my best to contact the addressee. Hiking i found 4 bankers boxes of paperwork with recent dates. I found a phone number and called. The guy said his girlfriend got mad and took all his files. I told him to send me $500 and I'd tell him where they were.
Just kidding! I texted him the location, he was so thankful. He asked me to stay and he'd give me some money but I got nervous and bailed. Didn't think about blocking my number but he never called.

Massachusetts
Hi everyone, I just joined the site and it’s amazing wondering where your best spots are in Massachusetts specifically Cape Cod and how do you go about this? I want to do it but I’ve never done it before.

Military items
Last night I found some bags with home office stuff, folders, labels, the usual. In one of the bags I opened there were photo albums, VA paperwork, and a couple awards (bronze star).
The owner passed in 2022 but was a CW3 in Vietnam, had a full photo album, magazines from that time, and so many pics of Vietnam.
I looked online for next of kin through their obituary but they had passed also.
I'll be taking it all to the local VFW or American Legion hall if anything for them to have a bit of nostalgia or maybe even closure if they by chance knew the deceased.
Just an idea if those that want to go that extra step.

Funniest diving story
As I currently only dive when a good opportunity presents it self. But in my days past I have done most and seen plenty. The funniest story from behind a big box store is...
Behind a smart pet store I found a load of stuff, beds, bones, toys, etc. I have to make a couple of trips back and forth to a near by car. I get most everything out except for open dog food and what I think is some stuffed dog toys. I reach for the toy and it hisses at me. It's a damn living racoon. I let the lid slam and ran to the car. I always double checked any place with food after that.
What's yours?

Advice for a Dublin Ireland new diver?
Hey, I’m from Dublin, (the capital of Ireland) and I really want to get started with dumpster diving but I don’t know any good spots, like in America, they have huge conglomerates that throw out hundreds of dollars worth of good stuff but here it’s only skips with rubbish building material, any advice from any veteran divers or fellow dubs?

DD Matchmaking 😂
I see so many posts of people wanting to have a diving buddy! I’d like to have one too! How can we set this up and be confidential? Everyone post what “region” they live in and then dm the people who are in your region to see if they’re close by? Any better ideas? There’s 130k of us so we have to have some matches! I just don’t want to post the states on here and catch too much attention.
