This is legitimately one of my worst fears from this lockdown bs. Small businesses are the backbone of our entire economy. So what we’re just going to let Amazon and Walmart completely monopolize the hole created from all of this?

Whatever small businesses are lucky enough to survive covid are only delaying the inevitable. Once minimum wage is raised to $15/hour, multimillion dollar corporations will be the only businesses left standing.

We did receive government assistance, but we barely scraped eventhough the online store tripled in revenue. If we didn't have an online store we would have been done. In one of the days we had 1 sale of 1.60 which is less than $1.

Common sense would be to allow the businesses to operate, not pay them to do nothing. Everyone understands the (minimal) risks of COVID, people should self regulate under that understanding.

If you think only one political party supports large business interests you’re a fool. All parties and all government officials get checks from big businesses

61

u/Et12355 Libertarian Conservative Nov 23 '20

People need to stop viewing politics as a game of ideology and realize it’s always been a game of power. All politicians behave in a way that serves their own interests—to gain power, hold power, and deny it from others—before they act to serve the people. Most of the time, and factions that serve the people are only taken because it also helps them get re-elected.

To be fair, both sides of the aisle are responsible for the government extending help to big business but not small business. I'm a Democrat, but I'm not a lunatic. Personally,I don't agree with this stupidity. But that lunacy goes on through their minds and good fucking luck persuading them. While I do agree with most of what you’ve said I have to argue the Amazon point.

Keep in mind Amazon is mostly a platform for online retailers. Those retailers can be both big or small players so it’s a misconception to say that Amazon is ruining small businesses.

If anything Amazon online retailers are “ruining” the small local brick and mortar shops. But that’s in my opinion due to people not keeping up with today’s marketplace dynamics.

2

u/Wallace_II Conservative Nov 23 '20

But many small brick and mortar shops help supplement their income by selling on Amazon and other platforms. In those cases, it may be the only thing keeping some small businesses afloat.

Whether it's this, tax policy, minimum wage, or whatever, every time Democrats get hold of something, they think they're sticking it to the big guys, but they're really just sticking it to the smaller guys that won't be able to compete anymore. Then you guy people like Costco that come up and publicly support the leftist policies... because they welcome that lack of competition.

If you want to implement actual honest-to-God fascism, this is really the way to get it done, long term.

10

u/zd625 Nov 23 '20

Why can't the government help the small businesses then by providing them with a proper stimulus package to get them through a lockdown?

7

because it's in the pockets of large corporations like walmart for shareholders to get first dibs on government money.

Some morons think that somehow the ruling back in the 1900s about quarantines for the Spanish flu says otherwise but I would point out that quarantines are not even close to a lockdown. I accept quarantines because they actually show scientific evidence that it helps.

Businesses need to be fighting this tooth and nail. Governors of these states need to be sued for every dollar the state economy lost, they had no right to ruin people's lives.

3

It is silly that local government has some say on shutting down small businesses but seems like no say on big-box stores. This is essentially why the mayor where I live opposes any shutdown, sees it as useless if it is only going to hurt local businesses and possibly/likely not help with covid at all especially if people can still go to the big-box stores.

1

u/anash224 Nov 23 '20

Well, what’s better: have all businesses function at 50% capacity for 1 year (lower since people who are high risk will not patron local businesses in person) or have them closed for a duration and then reopen at 100% capacity after a 6 week period.

Let’s do the math. Let’s call 1 years’ worth of profit P.

Option A: no lockdown, operate at 50%. Profit = .5(P) Option B: 6 week lockdown then reopen at full capacity. 52 weeks per year, minus 6 for lockdown, so 46/52=.88 so .88(P)

The math favors a strict lockdown into a full reopening, but half measures were taken. People pushed back against mask use, social distancing and the virus’ existence and impact, so a painful lockdown period was not followed by a clean reopening. Dragging this out further is clearly more costly than just getting rid of it. There are obviously cases where a business simply can not survive 6 weeks with no revenue, that’s what the small business loans were for but much of that relief largely went to very large corporations who were already better equipped to weather the storm. Damn, if only we had a republican in office who could have made sure those corporations didn’t get all the money while small businesses suffered. Oh wait...

Yup. Kill any local business. Divert money to franchises and big corporations.

Conservatives have controlled the Senate and White House for 2 years, conservatives have been installed at the head of nearly every single federal agency, and over half the states in this country have republican governors and legislatures.

People don't seem to realize that corporations and pretty much all institutions and brands are all owned by a small core of companies. Like for our media for example. Only six companies own all of what we see and hear. Very powerful position to be in if you were in those six.

-4

u/cuttups Nov 23 '20

Link to source?

4

u/DrSplarf Gen Z Conservative Nov 23 '20

Source 1 for first help

Source 2 for Dems blocking a different one

Dems blocked small business boost, and wanted it to go more towards "community based financial institutions"

5

u/cuttups Nov 23 '20

"Democrats do not object to the increase in funding, but they are calling for half of the new money to be targeted to "community-based financial institutions" which they say help businesses owned by minorities, veterans and rural Americans across the country."

That doesn't seem like a bad thing to ask for assuming those institutions are held accountable.

Edit. As for link one it seems like everyone was for that.

Bernie himself tweeted regarding this exact wealth transfer. AOC and other liberal Democrats would agree that the wealth transfer that just took place is horrible for the country long term

Just because its written in a humorous way doesn't mean the main point is false.

-7

u/Relenski Nov 23 '20

... do you hear yourself? If I lie on purpose, it’s a lie. If I tell you that the sky is red as a joke, you’re not supposed to look up and see red. But if I say it to someone that already has it in their head that it’s red, well they might.

That’s not how any of this works. The point is that people have a very bad time filtering satire from the truth when the satire fits their bubble of thought.

It's satire, as others have pointed out, but the Conservative, anti-reg part of us would NEVER ask for a small business to close it's door for a virus that has a 99+% survival rate. Hell, even if people are falling over dead in the street, would never tell someone to close their doors. This is America.
