I’ve got a car with a bad downstream 02 sensor that is doing something similar with the same kind of smell. The car has 275k on it. From what I read, if the 02 sensor is bad the car will run really rich.

Correct. Every time that’s happened on one of my vehicles, I could smell it on cold starts.
