Ettinger of London. Hand stitched leather. Love mine.

u/safaridiscoclub Mar 14 '13
I'm from the U.K. but want to spend less than £50 on a wallet. Any suggestions. Ettinger looks way out of my price range.

u/HollowPoint1911 Mar 24 '13
How long have you had your Ettinger wallet for? How is it holding up?
I'm looking to replace my 6+ year old Gucci black leather wallet since it's kinda beat up now. I'm not a fan of their current offerings since everything has too much Gucci branding on it. The wallet that I have is just black calfskin and the only branding on it is a 1x1cm logo on it.

I've had a Tumi Wallet for going on 10 years... ballistic nylon... bifold... great quality

Does anyone have the workaday wallet? Made from duck canvas..looks nice

u/dollarfiddy77 Mar 14 '13
Made of poly not leather!

Mar 14 '13
Do you have one, and which one, for how long?

u/PotatoSalad Mar 14 '13
I have had the Luxe6 in black for about 6 months now. So no idea if it's truly BIFL, but it's held up so far and it feels great. Be warned though, it only holds six cards. I tried fitting another card in there and there was no possible way.
1
u/bite_my_arse Mar 14 '13
I've had the Luxe6 in black for over two years now. It still holds cards securely and looks great after a lot of use. It is by far the best wallet I've ever owned, if anything happened to it I would definitely buy another one. It is limited in capacity however this has only simplified my life by reducing the cards I carry! It probably won't last a lifetime but I highly recommend it.

u/dickcockshitfuck Mar 14 '13
Get a Bellroy. Their whole marketing scheme is slimming down your wallet. I have the note sleeve (got it in December). I love it so far. It fits US currency snuggly. Forgive my currency ignorance, but if Canadian paper money is longer than the dolla dolla bill you may need to consider something else.

You just missed a sale on these JAW Horween leather wallets on Massdrop, but you can buy them on the website of the guy who makes them albeit at a higher price. I'm waiting for mine to come in the mail, but they seem like quality work.

This one has been riding in my pocket for... 7 years? It came with repair patch that I applied a couple years ago, mostly because I found it in a drawer. It's starting to get a little ratty, but I expect that it will remain functional for quit a while yet. It has a lifetime replacement guarantee (you pay shipping), but I think I'll just buy a new one when it finally gives out, because I've been so happy with it.
I also have one of these that I haven't used. It also comes with a repair patch and lifetime warranty. I use the other one because I prefer that form factor (I carry in the front pocket), but the hybrid bifold seems like it is higher quality and will last longer.
They look a little silly, I suppose, but it's a quality product that will last you a damn long time.

I've had this Ghurka for about 10 years:
http://www.ghurka.com/Classic-Wallet-Brown-Glazed-Leather-p/zzggw101gwl.htm
It looks great, but who cares. I just don't want to replace a wallet. You just get used to the way it feels, and nobody likes a new wallet.

u/WordsThatMakeSense Mar 14 '13
I wanted to find a non leather bifold. I searched for months and finally found one by a company called Eagle Creek. Best wallet I've ever had.

I got the Curbside. It's been about a year since I got it and it still looks brand new and hardly has any wear.
I don't keep as much of stuff as some people do in my wallet. I do keep a key card, 8 other cards (license, credit and debit card and others) and some cash in there and it fits comfortably in my back pocket. It's just a simple daily wallet, which is exactly what I need.

I bought one of these to replace my last DIFR one (which lasted long enough, but still):
http://sciplus.com/p/RFID-BLOCKING-STAINLESS-STEEL-WALLET_49053
Cheap enough to try it out, I figure.

u/robtwood Mar 14 '13
I have a Bosca and it's beautiful. My last wallet was a Brooks Brothers wallet and it lasted for 5ish years, but was falling apart when I retired it.
2
u/Nuggetized Mar 14 '13
Leatherology. I got one for my SO and he loves it. It looks beautiful. I also got his initials on it and they look really nice. Read the reviews on the site for even more verification.
2
u/Attatt Mar 14 '13
http://www.flipsidewallet.com/ I've had mine for almost 3 years and it barely has any scratches on it. Thinking about getting the Flipside Strata to replace my 2x, but don't have any really good reason to.

Mar 14 '13
Ecolution Hemp wallets from Rawganique.com $15-$17. Mine lasted for years. It was still in great condition when I lost it. It's about time to get a new one after trying a few less sturdy wallets.
2
u/adamsorkin Mar 14 '13
Ghurka - Can be pricey, but they last forever. Had mine for over 10 years until my brother's dog ate it.

I guess I fall under the minimalist camp...I'm waiting for my Slimmy wallet to expire so I can spoil myself with a Noah Lambert Uni-Fold Wallet, solid quality materials, solid quality design.

u/chickensh1t Mar 14 '13
A Mighty Wallet: http://www.mightywallets.com
Incredibly thin and durable - I've had mine for two years now, and it just doesn't want to break...
1
u/whine_and_cheese Mar 14 '13
I cannot agree enough.
They are cheap, durable and awesome.
I never looked back.

A friend bought a stainless steel wallet. He carried it around for about 6 months and the corner frayed a little. And exposed the ends. Of stainless steel. Threads. Shortly thereafter, the wallet went in the trash, and many of his pants went to have the pockets patched.
1
u/docmgmt Mar 26 '13
similar experience here. I got a stainless steel wallet a year ago. Superficially, it's holding up nicely. But the stainless steel threads have started to fray in the past week. And this is a bad, bad thing. Because, randomly, as I hold my wallet, I may get pricked by one of the steel threads poking out. And thus, I am starting the search for a replacement wallet.

Braun Büffel -
They only recently began exporting to North America and are truly excellent quality. I have a bifold moneyclip with a coin purse on the front that I got in 2002 that is still in great shape, but they have wallets in pretty much every style and configuration you could want. The prices are somewhat high ($100-$150 range looks like), but nothing like montblanc or similar. Plus, they look really classy and are something nobody else here really knows about yet.
2
u/docmgmt Mar 26 '13
I'd suggest taking the stainless steel wallet off the list. I came here to post my experience, and noticed another similar post about problems with the steel wires eventually fraying and poking you.

u/milfshakee Mar 14 '13
Does anyone have any suggestions for a tri-fold wallet BIFL? I looked for some suggestions here but they are all bi-foldz.
1
u/nothingisbad Mar 14 '13
I got my current wallet for 20$ from a small merchant with a site straight out of the 90s http://www.naturalreflections.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=001&Product_Code=CC-Wallet
It seems to have the best (certainly thickest full grain) leather of any wallet I've owned, US made, and best suited to beat my previous record of two years for a wallet.

u/Zwergner Mar 14 '13 edited Mar 14 '13
I have a Big Skinny L-shape and I am happy with it. Unfortunately I've only had it a little over a year so I can't really say whether it's BIFL material but it's held up pretty well so far. It's top grain leather.
It does have the problem that the top of the wallet is tapering and has almost completely snapped the magnetic strip off of my Sam's Club card. So I'd say it has a spot for my ID, then a spot for about 3 other cards (assuming single card per slot) and a 4th slot which might break your card.
EDIT: Here's the one I have, and in the brown picture where the baby blue "Business" card is is where my card was damaged. It might also be worth noting that I don't carry my wallet in my back pocket, but in a side pocket, so your mileage may vary.

I have one from Rolfs. It belonged to my grandfather. Not sure how long he had it, but I've used it for the last 15 years. It looks like the Credential style. Only $23.
1
u/MettaWorldWarTwo Mar 14 '13
My All-Ett in nylon fell apart. YMMV.
1
u/FLHKE Mar 18 '13
A couple questions: How long did it take for it to fall apart? Did you get the nylon or leather one? How hard did you treat it?
1
u/MettaWorldWarTwo Mar 18 '13
I had the nylon one and it took probably two years or more to fall apart. It didn't rip, it was just coming apart at the seams and looked like hell. It got to the point where it wasn't really holding the cards anymore (if I dropped my wallet all my cards would just fall out).
As far as treatment, I wear my wallet in my back right pocket, so it gets sat on all day long. It was a good wallet, but didn't wear well (by the end I felt almost like I was pulling out a Velcro wallet) so I went with a Saddleback.
FWIW My wife uses their card carrier (bought around the same time) and loves it.
1
u/FLHKE Mar 18 '13
Thanks for your answer. I just got the Travel one (since I'm in France and we have a bigger ID card and bigger driver's licence, I had to get one that was larger than a regular wallet). I usually store my wallet either in my front pocket of my vest or in my backpack, so I'm pretty confident it'll last longer than yours. Yay :)
1
u/Golden12345 Mar 14 '13
I've been using this wallet for 10 years so far and it hasn't shown ANY signs of wear. It's been everywhere: Beaches, camping, hiking, you name it. For $31, you simply cannot go wrong with this.
In my humble opinion, if any wallet deserves the BIFL endorsement, this one does.
it's the only wallet I will ever recommend to someone.

u/twootten Mar 14 '13
Corter Leather is launching his new line in about a week or so. He'll have a new wallet very similar to this.
1
u/safr0n Mar 14 '13
I don't own one yet but it looks good to me: http://www.mitchell-leather.com/Other_Products.html

u/groundhogcakeday Mar 14 '13
I have a Tyvek wallet. It is a long way from indestructible - I've only had it 8-9 months and it is mostly destructed. The paper is wearing through in several places. The ends unfold, making it loose. My cards slip out all the time. I'm wishing this thread had appeared a week ago - I've already ordered my replacement (All-Ett) and am just waiting for it to arrive.
1
Mar 15 '13
I had a Bosca that lasted about 12 years. My current Coach is almost 10 and it looks to be holding up better than the Bosca.
1
Mar 16 '13
Gianni Versace - Not the brand I would ever want to post in BIFL, but I can not be prejudice since the wallet has been serving me for at least ten years. It has some type of crocodile print that kept its shape( not crocodile leather). In 5 or 10 years I will probably go with a Saddleback wallet, but my old Italian still looks great and works just fine. It was a gift, so I do not know the price.

u/workinonit Mar 17 '13
I bought this wallet from Leather Goods Connection about a year ago, and it's gotten better everyday. The leathersmith is from Georgia (state) and had it shipped to Canada inexpensively and quick. I highly recommend buying a wallet from here.

u/CannibalVegan Mar 18 '13
I have a Fossil, its survived for 4 years so far. Started out light brown leather, has a dark patina now. Kinda cool.
1
u/Scott_11 Mar 28 '13
I got a cole hann about 10 years ago. It's just getting better with age, even though my puppy got a chunk of it a few years ago.
1
u/cgsur Aug 13 '13
Have saddleback ship by plain mail and haggle shipping in a polite way, you might get a break, although I find their wallets a bit unyielding, love their belts though.
-1
u/quebee Mar 13 '13
A tyvek wallet would probably last a long time, but it is certainly not conventional. If you want a more normal material, you should consider shell cordovan. The problem is that no matter how tough the material is, the stitching is the weak point. I'm not actually sure any wallet is BIFL.
1
u/chatmonchy Mar 13 '13
I have that wallet. Used it for about 3 years. While it's still holding up quite well (no frayed sides, no holes), it definitely looks very battered and not as clean as it used to be.
1
u/the_doughboy Mar 14 '13
Mighty Wallets have no stitching and should last quite a while longer.
1
u/Not_that_easy Mar 14 '13
They come apart pretty easily. I have one for my petty cash for work and have had to resort to taping the sides because it kept exploding on me.
1
u/crunchyfrog_yyz Mar 14 '13
try mont blanc thats what i use. I too needed 8 slots for my cards and this model fit me perfectly. I've been using the same wallet for 5 years and the condition of the leather is still very good
http://www.montblanc.com/en-us/shop/leather/4810-westside/horizontal-wallets/wallet-8-cc-08372.aspx
I was planning to buy a saddleback but its too thick and bulky
1
u/FunkMasterPope Mar 14 '13
Got mine probably 2+ years ago now and its still in as good of shape as when I got it

Came to suggest this as well. Got one as a gift from my brother when he got married 5 years ago. Still in good condition, could use some loving but doesn't need it.
