Well, it's coming up to that time of year again Winter, the coldest season of the year! (at least if you are in the Northern Hemisphere, sorry everyone else)

It’s time to make sure we’re all set with the best winter gear to keep us warm, dry, and safe. This thread is dedicated to getting and giving suggestion for high-quality winter gear.

Jackets, boots, gloves, hats, or anything else that’s critical for winter weather.

Guidelines

  • if you are looking for a gift idea, put "Request:" before your comment (without the Quotes) as it makes it easier to search separately from the suggestions.

  • if you have any specifications like budget, country or partial style of person you should also include that in your comment

Vintage My Rubbermaid cooler I bought 32 years ago.

I bought this cooler in 1993 when I was 18 years old. It’s the first cooler I ever owned and the only thing that’s stayed with me all these years. It’s been lost and found a hundred times and has traveled through countless moves, holidays, cookouts, trips, jobs, relationships, and even kids. I still have it in my truck (different truck now), and it holds a special place in my life.

Review Bean boots 12 years later

Post image

Purchased my first pair of LL Bean boots (left) 13 years ago, in 2012. Wore them through every winter since then. The sole finally was worn down enough, so I purchased a new pair (right). The older shoe laces are much better than the new (laces not pictured), so I am going to keep using the old laces. Overall, both boots feel very similar. Excited to wear the new pair this winter!

[Request] Rocking recliner that can withstand disabled 180lb man rocking constantly and throwing himself back on it.

My dad is disabled, he currently has a lazy boy but it isn’t holding up well. It fully lasted a few months before the chair lays back constantly when he’s sitting in it.

He has cerebral palsy and when he is sat down he will throw himself back half of the time and constantly rocks while watching TV. We will put his feet up for a nap as well but I tried today to put his feet back down and there’s now a new trick to making it work.

I’d like to get requests on rocking chairs that are built well enough or have a good enough warranty that he can be comfy for more than a few months. He needs one that isn’t too fluffy/plushy as well because he can get stuck in the chair and “un-earthing” him becomes a hassle lol.

[Request] Answered! Update: Found the BIFL version of my purse

Original post: https://www.reddit.com/r/BuyItForLife/s/5wZtP4Gb3D

Thanks for all your help Reddit. I ended up serendipitously finding my ideal purse in the cult favourite vintage store Whistler Chart while I was on holiday in Tokyo. They had a full wall of vintage leather bags (mostly Coach) and I had to get this one.

It has everything I loved about my old janky pleather Target purse - messenger strap, easy close/open flap, front pocket big enough to hold my phone separate from everything else, and zippered inside pocket to hold tampons and stuff.

I'm not at all experienced in verifying vintage Coach, so as best as I can tell from online sources it's either from around the 1970s or possibly fake. But hey a great old dupe bought in Japan is almost more fun! I've also heard there is a great market for vintage Coach bags that can easily be fixed up on eBay (but not so much in Australia where I am). Would definitely recommend if you can find a cheap one as they're all really simple and pretty.

Vintage 30+ year old baby gate, still works great for dog proofing!

Post image

My folks got this secondhand for like $10 when I was born in the 90s, and have had it ever since. We’ve had several other baby gates but none have lasted as long as this bad boy, even though it’s plastic.

My folks use them for dog control, especially when they’re young, and it’s still going strong. It’s really simple to operate, is very sturdy, and installs easily.

Not the strongest case of BIFL I suppose, since again, plastic, but it’s really well-made for what it is.

[Request] Do you have any boot/hiking shoe recommendations that are built to last?

Thumbnail gallery
Upvotes

These are Hi-Tech shoes (and waterproof) and sadly didn’t last too long. I’m a biologist and love to hike, I was wondering what are some good hiking boots or shoes that can last hopefully a lifetime or at least a long time. Preferably I’d like them to be black and similar to the boots on the 3rd pic because I can sneak them to sorta formal events (I’d wear long black pants over the top of the boot and only show the bottom part so they’ll look like formal shoes). Also preferably made out of leather, roomy and comfy to the feet. I’m willing to spend at most circa 200€/$ (maybe a bit more if you STRONGLY recommend it). Thanks

Hello,

I'm currently looking to purchase BIFL leather boots for up to 250 EUR. Unfortunately, most of the brands recommended on this subreddit are way above my budget.

All answers appreciated, thank You!

Discussion Looking for BIFL wool blanket. Worried about clothes moths - how common are they?

Upvotes

After weeks of researching wool blankets, I finally settled on the Faribault Mills Frontier line. But now I’ve learned about clothes moths and their love for wool, and I’m second-guessing my decision. Spending $400+ on a blanket only for it to become moth food 😆 feels risky. This would be a daily-use blanket, if that makes a difference. I’ve never had any kind of moth problem in my home but I have seen a couple tiny ones on my sticky insect trap; no clue what kind they were. Is this something I should be worried about?

[Request] What's a good BIFL item in Portugal?

I'm traveling to Portugal next month and I live in the Netherlands, where things are generally quite expensive. So I'm looking for suggestions on smallish items that can fit in carry on or checked luggage easily which can improve my life (household, beauty, health, fitness, board games for adults etc.)

Thanks.

Repair 1930s woolrich coat with modification

An update for anyone interested, these bands are definitely a modification that were hand sewn on. I'd hate to remove them as I can only imagine some wife lovingly stitching her husband's hunting coat, but unfortunately it's 2025 and walking around with red arm bands is probably not a good idea. Also had a broken button that I'll need to find a replacement for.

BIFL Skills How often do premium brands actually last longer than cheap brands?

I have a well off friend whose wife buys him expensive name brand clothes. I asked why, and he said because they last longer. Brands I know she buys him include AG jeans, James Perse, Finisterre, and Patagonia.

I wondered if you guys have found that nice brands actually do hold up better, and if so, do they hold up better enough to justify cost?

[Request] Looking for a Book Holder for Reading While Lying on My Back

I'm on the hunt for a book holder or stand that makes it easier to read while lying flat on my back. I love getting cozy with a book, but holding it up for long periods can be tiring, especially with heavier books.

Here’s what I’m looking for:

  • Hands-free or minimal effort to hold the book in place
  • Works well with hardcovers and paperbacks
  • Ideally something that’s adjustable or doesn’t require me to constantly shift around
  • Bonus points if it’s lightweight and portable

Review This Lodge cast iron pan has followed me through multiple moves and is at least 15 years old now and I feel like it’s just now getting broken in…. I don’t think there is a BIFl product that competes with cast iron cookware.

[Request] BIFL Bed Sheets - King

We bought Brooklinen sheets 3 years ago and love them. But I just found lots of tears due to the material wearing down near the bottom. Instead of buying another set I’m looking for another brand that will last longer and pref. NOT $200.

TIA

Here is my cooler master HAF.

This beast can support almost anything, I still have it since 2010 and it also has the original fans installed !

I keep it because it has 5 hdd slots and 6 more 5,25 slots that can be adapted to fit hdd and i use it for running my home NAS .

The monitor atop is a 24” screen, the board inside the case is a full atx board , not a mini arx!

[Request] BIFL items in Singapore

I am visiting Singapore in March. What would be some BIFL items, or good items to buy from Singapore.
