Boomer - "Yeah fuck kids! Cut education spending again every candidate I ever voted for!"
Also Boomer - "They're not teaching the kids as much as they used to and I don't like it."

Tbf, cursive is mostly only useful when compared to print in that it is much faster to write. I haven't written anything that I would say would be easier to write in cursive since I was in high school. Everything else has been typed or short enough that the difference in speed is pointless.

I haven’t used cursive since i was in elementary school. They taught us it in 3rd grade and just its been useless since then

u/Sororita Dec 08 '24
Oh, i haven't used it since I was taught unless I absolutely had to, but that's because I have dysgraphia, and it's basically impossible for me to write in it legibly. The last paper I had to handwrite was in ~2006, I wrote it with print, but I imagine it would have been faster if I could write in cursive legibly.

u/pm-me-turtle-nudes Dec 08 '24
Ok so some back ground, I am 19, so you wrote your last handwritten paper a year after I was born. I’m currently in college and the last paper I hand wrote was for the AP exams in high school 2 years ago. Whenever I had to hand write essays I would use print, but when I want to write for myself, like in my journal or anything, I write in a combination of print and cursive.

u/Sororita Dec 08 '24
Dysgraphia is a bitch and I have a hard enough time writing print legibly, so I never use it unless forced.

u/Old-Dirt6713 Dec 09 '24
Cursive was originally created to prevent ink bouts when writing with quills, so now that we have ballpoint pens, printers, and typing it is only really useful for signatures, and you can make a custom signature online so even that use is fading out.

u/Big-Bike530 Dec 09 '24
I'm just curious how these kids are growing up signing for things? Like having grown up learning it that's the only real use I've ever had for cursive is my signature. Even though cursive is more just the inspiration for your unique scribble. Do they learn how to at least sign their name? Do they just print their name? Scribble?

As a Gen Z who knows how to write cursive, I don't know how to feel about this comic lol

Same. My mom decided to teach me early, and has forced me to practice by insisting that all grocery lists and cards be written exclusively in cursive.

Yes it must be that way and no other or the cursive police will show up, break your kneecaps and give you a wet willy

I think that all you really need to know how to write in cursive is your name. Otherwise, it's just superfluous.

Gen Z here, the only class I've had that taught me how to write in cursive was in 2nd grade (when I barely knew how to write in print, let alone cursive), so I see where Lincoln Pierce got the idea

Big Nate is a classic!
I own some of the books and should definitely read them again.

Wouldn’t necessarily say this is boomer humor and I did find this comic entertaining/funny
This comic also isn’t saying that kids are dumb because they don’t know cursive but are instead saying that cursive is a bit outdated.

u/reaperofgender Dec 09 '24
When I went to school they taught us the letters in our names. That's about it. Apparently the teachers realized the only thing most people use cursive for is signatures these days.

u/Outsider512 Dec 09 '24
kinda off topic but as a kid i used to always wonder why the Big Nate series didn't continue past 6th grade, but as an adult I realized that Nate's highschool shenannigans probably wouldn't be appropriate for 3rd grader to read about lol

As a young millennial everyone should love cursive. And Spencerian business script should be the universally taught handwriting.

Some may be surprised to find a Big Nate comic described as boomer humour. But cartoonist Lincoln Peirce was born in 1963, which makes him a boomer.
There are numerous instances in Peirce's Big Nate comics that are typical of boomer humour. For instance, see this example of "wife bad" boomer humor.

u/sonofaresiii Dec 08 '24 edited Dec 08 '24
Well, that doesn't really read to me as "wife bad" humor but rather a bit of commentary on "wife bad" humor. The joke is that the boomer is making wife bad jokes, the comic isn't itself making a wife bad joke.
You're supposed to understand that the old guy is full of shit.

u/EndersGame_Reviewer Dec 09 '24 edited Dec 09 '24
You've convinced me; I'll concede the point, i.e. it's the boomer in the comic making the "wife bad" jokes, not the cartoonist.
Although the fact that the cartoonist made a whole comic about it does imply he finds it somewhat funny.

u/pharmacy_666 29d ago
it doesn't imply that at all. the tone of this comic implies the complete opposite. people do not only make art about things they enjoy

Absolutely not a bot. I've actively crusaded against bots, as you can see here.
As a hobby I've been collecting pictures and comics and jokes for over 20 years. I enjoy sharing them in a variety of subs, and coming up with wit or humor. My comments will show that I actively participate in the subs where I contribute.
I'll summon the sleuth bot to remove any lingering doubts that might remain.
