Going to Van Horn in a few.

Can anyone tell me best location to rent/buy a home? I keep hearing EL Paso is the place to do that.

Does anyone have the exact travel time from EL Paso to LSO?

Any super cons of EL Paso and or LSO no one talks about?

Will be moving myself and my family. I believe it would be good for us to grow and save the extra money.

Thanks,

I lived in Van Horn a decade ago back when the roads at LSO were all dirt roads. It took 45 minutes from Van Horn to ASC building. Van pool from El Paso to LSO was not a thing back then.

If I had to do it over again I would live in El Paso and take the van. Listen to audio books or read while traveling. If you are going to work outside you will be tired by the end of the day. It gets supper hot in summer and very cold in winter (20F at 7 AM was not uncommon). Don't forget to wear sunscreen! Better schools in El Paso, entertainment, housing, the list goes on.

If you choose to live in Van Horn you will be driving to El Paso on the weekends for decent grocery shopping, entertainment and so on. Housing was very limited back then. Even if that improved having anything done was hassle. You will be paying premium for everything because Van Horn has limited and unreliable pool of professionals. E.g. if your AC breaks you will have to get someone from El Paso ($$$).

If things don't work out at Blue there are way more opportunities in El Paso than in Van Horn.

  1. El Paso 100%. Van Horn housing is a nightmare.
  2. El Paso -> Van Horn 1h 45m plus timezone change from MST to CST & Van Horn -> LSO 30m. Take the vanpool if you're living in ELP.
  3. A lot of the cons are mitigated by living in El Paso, but that drive every day is rough. Rotations help a lot, but everyone has a time limit working out there

What about horizon city area? Or is that way away from the van pool?

It's closer but iirc the van pool has specific pickups in El Paso. So you'd have to drive there from horizon city every morning.

When are you moving? I start on November but there is no rent available in van horn, highly considering El Paso but it is 2 hours drive each direction

I'm doing el paso. I have a whole family to move. I don't think they would love me anymore if we lived in van horn lol.

Still waiting on my start date. All this is super fresh for me.
