Battlefield doesn't need a campaign. Every entry prior to Bad Company (with the exception of BF2:MC) didn't have a campaign and DICE did set up what was happening, it just wasn't through a campaign like prior modern entries.
2042 still does a terrible job explaining its setting and on top of that, the setting itself is nonsense. Most BF games are set in historical conflicts and the ones that aren't use factions that are historically opposed to one another as rivals.
2142 is an entirely made-up conflict but the very first trailer makes it abundantly clear that a climate catastrophe is causing alliances to shift as countries battle for habitable land.
2042 is just random soldiers fighting over random buildings and there's tornadoes every so often.
they set up a prologue which sounded super promising with the NOPAT thing and then went NOWHERE with it...
So yeah, they needed a single player campaign for this one. Because clearly they wanted us to give at least one flying fuck about these characters and their connections but beans-ed it harder than a bean casserole

What fantasy? What joy? You had no solo campaign to explain what the fucks going on and you teased 2114 stuff only to say you're giving up on it.
You brought cringe and tried to piggy back on the flavour of the month at the time and failed.
Fuck right off
