Victorian Liberal party announces real estate agent as candidate for Werribee by-election VIC Politics

As someone who lives in the electorate, this isn't a good choice for the libs
A "working class" culture war based campaign could actually be an effective strategy from the liberals, at least in closing the gap in both the primary and 2pp, but it's unlikely to be successful.
I predict that the Labor Party will win, but they will have a decent swing against them and this could become a marginal seat if the Liberal Party goes all in on culture war nonsense (which would cost them seats in other areas simultaneously)

It would be a serious concern to Labor if they lost a seat like Werribee. It’s very red.

Conversely this is the exact type of electorate the Libs believe they can target, esp the fed Libs where they are trying to appeal to outer suburbs working class than the traditional affluent inner city suburbs taken over by Teals. It would spell a bit of a disaster for the Libs if they can't make significant ground in this by-election.

isnt that babet idiot and his brother real estate agents ?
I get that its a senate seat but being a real estate agent isnt a deal killer anymore

I mean it is an entirely different dynamic. Senate candidates are rarely really known at all or given any thought for voters. In a lower house especially a by election a lot more attention is paid to individual candidates. You would struggle to find anyone who voted for the UAP senate ticket who would have known who Babet was when they voted.

From SMH: “Murphy runs a real estate agency in Werribee but no longer lives in the electorate. He moved to Essendon West to be closer to his children a few years ago, after living in Werribee for almost 30 years.”
Aren’t candidates required to live in the electorate? Or is that only a requirement if elected?

It's only a requirement at the local government level for councilors to live in the LGA they represent. They don't have to live in the specific ward they are elected to though.

Did it used to be different? I seem to recall candidates moving to the electorates they were contesting prior elections.

It really should be a requirement. It kind of rubs me the wrong way that candidates can represent a constituency and yet not vote for themselves to do it.
My area had a by-election last year, and the ads against the Liberal candidate were very straight-to-the-point about the fact that she was out of area (granted she did only live about 10-15 minutes away from the seat).
There really should be a rule that candidates need to live in/adjacent to their electorate.

It should be a requirement but it'll never happen because parties won't be able to parachute their top dogs into safe seats.

They don't have to live there in the run up to being elected nor if they win. In fact my new territory mla doesn't live in my electorate nor has moved in after winning, he lives in another city so I mean not exactly great.

I don't think they're required to live in the electorate, iirc the recent SA by election had a Lib candidate that lived elsewhere as well

So? It’s a safe seat for Labor. Doesn’t overly matter who the LNP run.
Should they have chosen a former Union hack?

u/Perfect-Werewolf-102 The Greens 1d ago
Probably better for them to choose someone that appeals to Labor voters

Good point.
But maybe REA’s aren’t as hated in the suburbs where it doesn’t cost $400 to rent a room. They may have done their homework.

Congrats, they just made a safe seat even more safe. Brilliant tactics there.
Actually, why the hell should I be suggesting how to make the vic libs less unelectable? Pretend I didn’t say anything. Keep doing what you do.

Last regional council election out my way had two retiring incumbents, thus two ostensibly "open" spots. We filled those two seats with a real estate agent and the executive chairman/owner of one of the biggest building/civil construction firms in the state lmao.
No matter how stupid you think the average voter in this country is, another inevitable lowering of the bar is never far away.

Because the only people who join the lib party are their family and friends (because they pay the dues).
It's why the only people who enter politics are doctors, lawyers, crooks, business people and the executive class.
Money buys you members, advertising, lobbying and thus preselection.
Or did you think only the most qualified for public service get nominated and voted in?

hey i get it, theres all these unelectable thundercunts donating to the libs hoping to buy their way into power, and they cant just keep saying "nah we're not going to put you on the ticket because you're a loser, by the way can you give us some money for the slightly less odious prick we want to run instead (who just happens to be bronwyn bishops nephew or something)" forever.
so let him run in an election they're going to lose anyway, that way the voters can tell him how hated he is for them.

Look, I understand. Lots of people would vote for real estate agent politicians.
