Salmon Farming: Engineering Student
Dear Aquaculture users, I have been giving an assignment to do regarding creating a sensor hub (a conglomeration of different sensors) to test the water quality for salmon farming. I was wondering if anyone would have experience in salmon farming and could offer me some insights into what should typically be tested for. Thanks for the help š

How do I determine the right type of aerator for a 24mĀ³ fishpond with tilapia?
Hi, Iām a student working on a research project that involves designing a solar powered floating fish feeder and fishpond monitoring system. One key aspect of my project is ensuring sufficient oxygen levels in the pond.
Here are the details of my setup:
- Pond size: 24 cubic meters (5m x 7m x 1.2m)
- Fish type: Tilapia in the juvenile stage (around 1000 fish)
- Power source: Solar
- Objective: Automated aeration
Iām looking for guidance on the following:
- What type of aerator (e.g., paddle wheel, air stones, diffuser, etc.) is best suited for this pond size and fish type?
- Are there specific aerators that work efficiently with renewable energy sources?
- How do I calculate the required aeration capacity or oxygen transfer rate for optimal fish health?
- Any tips for integrating the aerator with an automated system powered by a microcontroller?
Thank you for your time and insights. Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

IBC tote tilapia
Hello. I'm building a tilapia system outdoors in an IBC tote. It will be 275 gallons. Does anyone have a suggestion for an outdoor pump that's either solar (preferred) or battery operated?

Heating fish Ponds in Central Florida
Hello I am a betta breeder that just moved to Central Florida. One thing I didnāt take into account was how cold it would get in the winters. The temperatures get in the 30 and 40 Fahrenheit which is too cold to heat the fish I breed which are bettas. My plan was to grow them out in large 4ft by 8ft concrete ponds but the only obstacle Iām encountering is how Iām going to be able to heat them up. The only option is I is to use big heaters but Iām guessing that will bring up my light bill by a lot. Anyone have any other ideas as to how I would be able to heat up these outdoor ponds?

Pupfish
So not really sure if this is the right place for this if not I'd love suggestions. So I am currently enrolled in an associates program for aquaculture & fish hatchery management. I know just a two year degree is limiting. But my question is, how insane of a dream is it to eventually get to work in death valley/amagarosa valley even if it's just relative grunt work? I suppose maybe a better question is how much more education or connections would I need to build to get hired in with US fish and wildlife realistically. I'm 32 currently so I just wonder will I be broke and in school until I'm well into my 40s if I try for something like this?

Building out the community š
Hey Everyone,
We've been posting recently about a new platform were building to allow people to directly support and get involved with aquaculture production called Wavestock!
We just launched our official subreddit r/Wavestock to get more information out to everyone about how we are trying to support global regenerative aquaculture.
If aquaculture is your thing, we would love to have you in our community contributing to discussions and what our team is building š

Trays for bottom culture
galleryDoes anyone have any suggestions for trays to use for growing oysters in 15-30 feet of water. I am not allowed to use any suspended gear and I am looking for something lightweight. I do not want to use bottom cages with bags because of the weight, I have used them in the past.
I attached two pictures of what I am planning on testing out but I do not know if anyone has used these on the bottom instead of suspended.

Anyone here have any insight about this Larvae Technician job?
paycomonline.netIām thinking of applying for this job. But I know itās in a pretty remote location (surprising right?). Wonder if anyone has any experience in a shellfish hatchery setting, and specifically what the day to day might be like. Also, the pay seems ok I think?

Building a new type of security backed by aquaculture
Hey Everyone,
Our team is developing a new type of security backed by aquaculture production (fastest growing food sector in the world)
We help producers securitize aspects of their business as a way to get much needed public capital into the industry to help scale regenerative aquaculture ventures.
Weāre really interested in getting thoughts / concerns from people who are in the industry to help us build a better product !
Do you think this type of public financing approach would be a benefit for aquaculture?
Edit: we can give more info on what weāve built so far and be more detailed for anyone interested but wanted to respect rules about self promotion !

Thinking of working in aquaculture, what is it like?
I have a degree in microbiology and have been working as a microbiologist but am honestly interested in bio and natural resourcesā¦
I likely have an interview coming up for entry level fish camp work. (I did a sort of pre-interview over the phone today, and we agreed to move to the next steps.) The pay is honestly kind of bad but I feel like I could actually enjoy the work, even the manual labour aspects. I am hoping to get some aquaculture experience to maybe work as a biologist for an aquaculture company eventually.
How is it living on a fish farm sea camp? I have never had an issue with motion sickness on the ferries here etc, but wondering what itās like on a sea camp. Is sea sickness a common problem?
For anyone who may have gotten a biology/microbiology kind of degree and worked then chose to change directions to aquaculture and started from the bottomā¦ What kind of timeline could I expect before being able to start moving up? Traditionally I have learnt things very quickly at jobs and end up getting kind of bored once things get too easy so I like to move quick but I realize employers like people to remain in their roles for a whileā¦ It is also difficult to start at the bottom considering I was managing a small microbiology lab before, but I have to suck it up I think, lol.
Based on the call I had today, they have had people with a similar background to me before who did that exact path, but I didnāt want to ask how long it took them! But I also want to know what to expect and what I am getting into before signing any contracts, etc!
