If you're asking a question about an antique make sure to have photos of all sides of the object, and close-ups of any maker's marks. Also, add in any background information you have, and add in a question so we know what you want from us! You must tell us the country you're in. I love shops like this, you never know what you are going to find!

125

u/knackeredAlready Sep 25 '23

Yes a treasure trove of loveliness!

123

u/MrDarcysDead Sep 25 '23

I really, really want to help OP clean the place up. That photo looks like Disneyland to me!!

44

u/RogerClyneIsAGod2 Sep 25 '23

Same here!! DREAM JOB RIGHT THERE!!

I would gladly take any Halloween or Christmas items off your hands there.

12

u/freckleskinny Sep 26 '23

I just have to say: O My! Looks like a lot of fun... for a long time... so jealous 💌

15

u/PresentationNext6469 Sep 26 '23

One upon a time Disneyland had a very eclectic antique store. So much fun back then when people enjoyed less plastic and bought sugary items every 10 yards.

8

u/MrDarcysDead Sep 26 '23

This is a cool fact I did not know. Thank you for sharing!

when I started you couldn't even walk inside the stuff was pilled up to the door and all the lights were broken.

u/bougiehippie Sep 25 '23

Wow, especially considering that was the case, it’s looking great! It love the organization and see some awesome finds.

And condolences to you and your family. You’re serving his memory well ❤️

47

u/kvandeman Sep 25 '23

I’ve been cleaning out my parents house that they lived in for 50 years. They definitely erred on the side of caution and kept absolutely everything. It’s been overwhelming physically and emotionally. They had a lot, you have so much more. Yours does look much more interesting and therefore time consuming, lots of rabbit holes.

12

u/NoFanksYou Sep 26 '23

I did that a couple years ago and it was awful for the most part. They kept so much pointless crap. It made me start cleaning up my stuff so my kids don’t have to deal with it

9

u/RNDiva Sep 26 '23

Nothing like going through stacks and stack and stacks of papers and finding countless gas receipts from the ‘60’s. Been there and done that.

4

u/Weary_Barber_7927 Aug 22 '24

Or manuals for every appliance they ever bought.

1

u/TheToyGirl Nov 07 '24

Sounds like my cupboard lol

7

u/Mtb_Bike Sep 27 '23

Watched my mom do this after my grandma passed away. Between the memories and the work, she was drained. Odd items too..finding old love letters from my grandpa, or the obituaries for my three uncles that passed before my grandma in an old notepad with “I love you more” scribed on the front ……

I asked her if I could help organize her house now, because there is no way I can handle that….i cry when mufasa dies in lion king…

3

u/Karena1331 Sep 28 '23

My siblings and I made (and helped) my parents downsize from a 3000 sq ft home to a 1200 sq ft condo for precisely this reason. My Dad was an almost hoarder of all things woodworking and had a huge detached garage to empty as well. We are so happy that we had them do this now instead of us all dealing with it later. Sending good vibes your way!

44

u/tabbathebutt Sep 25 '23

Your grandpas store looks like heaven. There is one lamp in particular that I’m dying over. Condolences for your loss, but I hope you’re enjoying the work in the store. ❤️

16

u/omgmypony Sep 25 '23

Is it the one with the beaded shade?

12

u/tabbathebutt Sep 25 '23

You know it!! I also love that clear acrylic floor lamp that’s missing a shade.

1

u/joemama67 Sep 26 '23

I really want to shine a black light on it! I bet the yellow beads glow

7

u/dontmesswithtess1121 Sep 26 '23

It’s the clear chandelier for me. And the china. I’m also a sucker for antique glass in vases, decanters, candy dishes, etc 🩷

6

u/tabbathebutt Sep 26 '23

Did you notice the stained glass window behind that pink lamp in the first pic? 😍 there’s also an awesome round mirror in the final photo. And several of those paintings look promising. It looks like a really wonderful store that you could walk through over and over again and find wonderful new treasures every pass through.

6

u/dontmesswithtess1121 Sep 26 '23

Agreed. I could poke around for hours.

You’ve accomplished a lot! One step at a time will get it done!

14

u/Addicted-2Diving Sep 25 '23

There must have been many hidden freeware’s you came across as you created a path in I’d imagine. This is American pickers type stuff

10

u/TyrantHal Sep 25 '23

I’ve seen some Antiques Roadshow type stuff!

10

u/Addicted-2Diving Sep 25 '23

Very cool. I hope to come across a store like this that is open at some point. Could get lost in here for hours lol

5

u/Acceptable-Ticket242 Sep 25 '23

He’s so proud of you!

3

u/PresentationNext6469 Sep 26 '23

That’s a lot of care in handling a lot of items. Sorry for your loss and all in all he had amazing taste and knowledge of valued items. You could probably see to this forum here without much dread like on Offer Up. Peace and Love.

3

u/Starshine_etc Sep 26 '23

I'm sorry for your loss.

My father passed away unexpectedly and owned a pawn shop. While similar, this looks like a much more intensive process than we had to go through in order to get rid of everything including contacting those with pawns/consignment. Best of luck. One day at a time, right?!

my goal is to eventually start a company that rents antiques for movie sets, we used to do it back in the day. With a website where everything categorized by decades. Once everything is logged.

110

u/UnprofessionalGhosts Sep 25 '23

I’m in NYC and there’s a place like that down the street from me, though they’ll sell to private buyers too. Got the exact same kitchen table they used in the movie Mermaids from them.

38

u/Butterfly_Pea3 Sep 25 '23

That is amazing! If you don’t mind sharing, which store in NYC are you referring to? I’m in the market for some specific things 👀

13

u/zilla82 Sep 25 '23

Also in NYC and interested!

34

u/TheDuchessOfBacon Sep 25 '23

A lot of chandeliers and doorknob hardware came from my shop in the movie Amityville Horror movie. Then some Hollywood pickers bought lots of vintage rhinestone jewelry from me but they wouldn't tell me what movies they were for. I guess they weren't allowed to say because early production at the time. It's a cool feeling, though.

5

u/snxwfall Sep 25 '23

Wow this is amazing. New life goals…

1

u/AutoModerator Sep 25 '23

I noticed that you mentioned vintage. Over at r/Collectables and r/Mid_Century they are always keen to see newer and vintage items. Share it with them! Sorry if this is not relevant.

I’ve done IT work for a guy who owns a clothing boutique in NYC. He has warehouses full of clothes by decade and his clothing has been featured in movies such as American Gangster. He also collects a ton of other miscellaneous weird things but deals in a lot of vintage band t shirts too.

That would be very interesting work, like being a time traveler.

10

u/InnocentTailor Sep 25 '23

That sounds so cool! Period pieces or even aesthetically aligned fiction (steampunk) would love to do business with you.

5

u/Aviaja_Apache Sep 25 '23

Maybe start a website, or start putting things on eBay.. there’s always someone looking

5

u/Glumpenstein Sep 25 '23

People need this kind of stuff for weddings too fyi 😉

3

u/qsouthsue Sep 26 '23

That’s the first thing I thought “ hmmmm props mistresses can shop here”

6

u/TyrantHal Sep 25 '23

Happy to hear you have an objective to focus on. Sorry for your loss. You honor his memory by putting his well curated collection to good use.

You have a great selection of 19th century farm equipment/tools! I can imagine a period piece of a farmhouse and barn coming to life with the early 20th century sewing machine, chandeliers, lamps, etc.

I wish you the best.

6

u/Prestigious_Floor40 Sep 26 '23

A candy store to me!!! I’m so glad you are able to appreciate his collection. I see so many cool things. I had a brain injury 17 years ago. I love going stores like this! It helps unlock memories for me. All I need is a look and something comes back. You are so blessed❤️

2

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '23

If you do this, definitely create multiple social media accounts. You can get paid for views and that type of business is so interesting.

2

u/dryerdoor Sep 26 '23

Whats the name of your Antique shop?

1

u/TheToyGirl Nov 07 '24

If you do that, vthen you'll need to categorise into eras to start ,then have knowledge to date within 2 to 5 years and be able to find additional items. There are prop stores which have everything for certain age/era/class/scenario. They rarely rent odd items from one place and others from another.

Why not make a tiktok or YouTube channelbexploring the shop with stories? Make money that wat...everyone loves to explore and find new things with stories.

u/WanderingLost33 Sep 25 '23 edited Oct 17 '23

Bit was about four exits back.

The difference between a hoarder and a collector is, quite obviously, taste.

Edit: I meant to imply that hoarding is the lower level and we hoarders weed our collections to show our taste when we physically run out of room. I don't think my humor landed well. Apologies if it came off... I don't even know, but apparently an /s or something was needed.

u/drmlsherwood Sep 25 '23

My best to you and your family. ❤️

4

u/EmeraldPrime Sep 26 '23

So happy to hear your grandpa was there for you❤️ which must make his passing incredibly difficult. I hope each time you do, or teach, the things he taught you that you smile and remember him. 💐

28

u/buzzbot235 Sep 25 '23

Do you know anything about antiques prior to your grandpas passing, or are just trying to get everything in order before reopening the shop or selling it all as an estate/etc? Best of luck, either way that looks like a massive undertaking.

86

u/keffir1 Sep 25 '23

my family has been in the business for a while I'm lucky to have all the contacts I need. This is the tip of the iceberg there is twice the amount in storage currently 😅

10

u/TyrantHal Sep 25 '23

Heh I’d work for free just to climb around and ID the paintings.

17

u/Pscho_Meema0109 Sep 25 '23

Oh my. What a treasure trove. A big job for you but hopefully a new surprise around every corner. I love shops like this.

14

u/[deleted] Sep 25 '23

Wow! You have a great sense of style! It’s lovely. I’m glad you are carrying on. I could spend hours in here, just looking.

I’m sorry about your grandfather, but I’m glad that you had him in your life. Peace toyou and your mom.

7

u/UnprofessionalGhosts Sep 25 '23

Omg that glass floor lamp😍

Grandpa had good taste. Sorry for your loss🤍

7

u/smokylimbs Sep 25 '23

I'd love to bring a big lunch and thermos of tea, lock the door, and poke around here for hours. This kind of shop makes my little heart happy.

6

u/ilovebabyblayze Sep 25 '23

Where is your store. Some nice lamps in there

4

u/SpoilermakersWabash Sep 25 '23

I got dibs on that green lamp!

Is there an online shop? Or location please.

5

u/liv4pj Sep 26 '23

This place looks so beautiful.

4

u/glodiegirl Sep 25 '23

Where are you located?

3

u/Stardust_Particle Sep 25 '23

Wow. What a treasure hunt! The photos looks like scenes for a jigsaw puzzle. I would love to spend hours looking at each piece and wondering about its history.

3

u/hockeydudeswife Sep 25 '23

I’m so sorry. This must be so hard for you and your mom. He sounds like a very special man. I’m glad you are finding treasures from your childhood. How sweet that he hung on to your special things for you.

u/Different_Ad7655 Sep 25 '23

3

u/refugefirstmate ✓✓ Mod Sep 25 '23

My sympathies, about both Grandpa's death and having to clean this out.

Just the idea of separating out the actual antiques makes my head hurt.

3

u/Missthing303 Sep 25 '23

May his memory be a blessing. He must have been a very cool person because this is such a great store!!

If you’re around NYC I would totally shop there. I love that beaded lampshade!

3

u/TwoAccomplished1446 Sep 25 '23

Going through the possessions of someone who loved each item and knew its story must be absolutely wrenching. I hope anything sold goes to someone who will love it as much as he did. Let that be part of his legacy.🙏🏾❤️

3

u/RedRedVVine Sep 26 '23

Wow thats an amazing shop! Sorry for your loss.

3

u/cipher446 Sep 26 '23

So sorry to hear about your grandpa's passing. But OMG don't tease me with all of that beautiful stuff. The lamps. The globe!

3

u/Hodaka Sep 26 '23

The 45's in the stack.

I can't see the artist, but let's start with the Meteor label.

3

u/neely68 Sep 26 '23

I sure would like to purchase that gold round mirror! Love! 🥰

3

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '23

Condolences for your family’s loss. What a magical monument of his life!

3

3

u/Ok_Profile_2120 Sep 26 '23

I’ve seen like 15 things I’d want within 30 seconds of looking at this picture lol

3

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '23

Is this heaven?

11

u/Beginning_Brick7845 Sep 25 '23

I finished a course on museum collections management recently. Please use the same standards for handling these objects as a museum would. Don’t touch anything without gloves. Support everything fully as you move it. Store everything securely where the weight of the object pulling on itself won’t damage it. Document everything. Don’t make any repairs to any object that can’t easily be undone without damage to the object. Research every piece, even if only with a quick Google search. These objects came into the collection for a reason. Try to figure out why. Locate and preserve any documentation relating to the objects that you can locate.

7

u/GoodQueenMyth Sep 25 '23

OP wants to rent to movie sets. There will be zero white glove treatment there! 😂 There will be an expectation of a certain amount of L&D or damage that will make them additional money above the rent.

2

u/samalton86 Sep 25 '23

Love the crystal chandeliers

2

u/Double_Reward230 Sep 25 '23

DAM!!!! Bet there is some treasure there!! Super jelly!! Need some help! :)

2

u/TrifflinTesseract Sep 25 '23

There are websites that sell individual pieces of china to help people complete their set or replace broken pieces. You may want to see if they want to buy the china.

Sorry don’t remember the url.

May he rest in piece, and I'm sorry for your loss. I hope the task at hand interests you more than feeling like a dusty burden. I see many great finds in these photos. I would have loved growing up with an antique store in my family.

What are your plans with it? Are you going to open it and continue to run it?

2

u/Professional_Rise148 Sep 25 '23

If you find any coins or items marked 925, Sterling, or with a lion stamp, send them my way!

2

u/Disastrous-Goal-2127 Sep 25 '23

I just love little stores like this. You never know what you will find. I always find the coolest books, paintings, vinyls, and trinkets. I'm definitely loving your grandpa's color vibes lol. Condolences on the loss of your Grandfather. But maybe you will find more of him in the things he collected, if that makes sense.

2

u/NikeJoel Sep 25 '23

Beautiful ! What I wouldn’t give to visit his shop

2

u/sneakynautilus Sep 25 '23

Im sorry about your grandfather. I hope while venturing through all these treasures you feel connected and close to him. Thank you for sharing with us, these pictures look like the find-it games. I wonder what you’ll find!!

2

u/Any1fortens Sep 25 '23

Wow, lucky you. Looks like some beautiful stuff!

2

u/EmergencyFeeling1612 Sep 25 '23

This reminds me of an antique shop in Jersey I was at probably over a decade ago. I begged my dad for the 1970s blue typewriter they had. I still have it and I often think of my late father when I look at or use it.

I'm so sorry for your loss OP. I'm sure your grandpa is smiling down on you, grateful you are looking after something he tended to dearly. Much love to you and your family.

2

u/formyburn101010 Sep 25 '23

Stop it. I can only get so erect

2

u/JasonIsFishing Sep 25 '23

I am sorry for your family’s loss…..but please don’t let buyers take advantage of it. You and your family deserve what your grandpa’s collection is worth. Antique buyers prey on families after a death.

2

u/jamesfox019 Sep 25 '23

Is that heaven…?

2

u/DragonFlyCaller Sep 25 '23

I zoomed and “shopped” for too long! Found many items I would enjoy :)

2

u/Lost_Aquatics Sep 25 '23

Getting some serious Toy Story 3 vibes here

2

u/InitialMistake5732 Sep 25 '23

Sorry for your loss. And wishing you strength for what you have to do.
I have had to handle a few people’s estates. It is almost always physically or emotionally exhausting.
That’s why I’m getting rid of everything now.

2

u/ChiweenieGenie Sep 26 '23

There's a sweet little book called "The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning" by Margareta Magnusson that talks about decluttering/cleaning out your belongings before your family must do it for you. It's surprisingly touching and interesting - your comment reminded me of it. 🙂

2

u/InitialMistake5732 Sep 26 '23

Oh-that sounds interesting-I checked it out from my library -thanks

2

u/Striking-Tangerine83 Oct 25 '23

There's a show now!! I haven't seen/read the book so I can't say how it compares, but I would describe it using the same adjectives you used to describe the book.

Sorry for your loss, may you find personal treasures as your sort through everything and make some money on "other's treasures"

2

2

3

u/TheMidwestMarvel Dealer Sep 25 '23

OP, I suggest starting an online store and selling cheap to clear stuff quickly

3

u/archersbow3 Sep 25 '23

My condolences for your huge loss. I can only imagine it almost seems like a double loss in your circumstance. But I am glad you are finding things that help you a little by going through everything. He had wonderful taste. This is the type of "hoarding" if it can be called that I can get behind. Such beautiful lighting and copper pieces. The cobalt glass and that draped art deco looking hanging mirror. Too many others to list actually! If you are selling any of it online please provide me with a link! I would love to check everything out! Hoping you continue to find little things to help in the following days and weeks.
