Announcement Welcome to r/Antiques, read this before posting!

This subreddit is dedicated to sharing and learning about antiques in your collection or that you find, or are considering buying. Antiques are items that are 100 years old or older.

When you're posting about a particular object places kindly include multiple, clear photographs of it from different angles so we can see it from every side. If there are any marks or identification (labels, signatures) please take close ups of those. If it's pottery or porcelain, tag photos of the bottom, if it's a rug make sure to have a shot of the back. Make sure that these photographs are clear and well lit so we can see the works in particular (preferably not surrounded by a bunch of other objects).

Make sure to also include dimensions so we know the size of an object.

Also explain what are you looking for. Are you asking for general information? Who the maker is? The age, value or provenance?

If you do not include a question, the dimensions and sufficient background information and photographs of the object your post may be removed by the moderators.

IN SUMMARY, include:

multiple, clear photographs from a number of angles

any background information you have

close up of particular makers marks

the question you'd like to ask

Keep in mind, antique means objects that are a 100 years old or older. You cannot post newer items here. Share them in r/collectables instead.

These rules will make it easier for our subreddit antique experts to give you some help! Remember, if you're solely posting a link to a website/blog/store then this will be considered spam and your post will be removed (multiple posts may result in being banned).

Finally, keep these other subreddits in mind in case your post is better suited for one these -

Unfortunately, I was not able to edit my original post. I’ve provided additional pictures of the secretary desk. My original question was is this Tiger Oak? I think it’s been established that it is not. Any thoughts or opinions on date range/possible value of this piece would be very helpful. Thank you all for your input!!

Show and Tell Found at the thrift store. The details are so fine compared to other hand painted Chinese Porcelains I've seen. Would love any information on it like what time period its from, value, or what it's depicting.

Questions Shrenkeisen’s Rocker

Thumbnail gallery

Good morning!

I found this short little rocker on FB marketplace for $20 and loved how unique it was, so I grabbed it. Now that I am home with it, I discovered a brass tag on the underside that appears to be dated, and I am curious about the history of this piece. I thought- given the price- that it was probably a reproduction, but it appears to be the real deal, and it’s in excellent condition for a chair as old as I now suspect it to be.

Can anyone give me any insight into the age, history, value etc of a rocker like this?

Thanks in advance!

Questions Old family hall tree -- need some input

We've had this hall tree in our family for Lord only knows how long. I'm wondering if anyone has seen a design like this or another piece like it. I'm not sure what the wood it is but it appears to be open pored. It doesn't feel heavy enough to be ash, although I'm not ruling anything out.

Unfortunately, there are no labels on the back or any hallmarks that I can find. It has iron hooks finished what I believe could be porcelain or glazed ceramic caps. The umbrella stands have iron...bowl looking things at the base, which I'm guessing kept water from getting everywhere as rain dripped off any umbrellas held there.

Regardless, I absolutely love this piece. I think it's one of the most beautiful antiques I've ever seen. I'm thrilled that it's actually in my house. But I would surely love to know more about it if possible.

Thank all of you and God bless.

Questions Glenister Work Chair

Thumbnail gallery
4 Upvotes

Hi all, hope someone can help.

I've just purchased the above from our local auction. I'm trying to shed some light as to the providence of it.

I've done so much research and so far I have the following information -

Coronation chair A mahogany chair used in the coronation of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra in 1902 that is stamped with "GLENISTER MAKER WYCOMBE" on the front seat rail and "ER VII (with a small crown) CORONATION" on the back edge of the rear seat rail

Work chair An 1890s chair with original rexine upholstery that is stamped and numbered.

My chair is stamped SK43 GRV (and possibly i), I can't quite make it out. But it also hast a Crest stamp. I can't find any information about the Crest stamp.

I am in England.

Sorry for the long post and thank you very much in advance for any information 😊

I inherited this from my grandmother and has always been told it was late 16th century English. It was purchased in England in the 60s and was with my grandmother until her death recently. I’ve taken it to some local antique dealers in OKC and though the think the age seems right (with a few late 19th century repairs) the can’t accurately appraise it and have advised me to take it to Dallas for appraisal. Does anyone have any insight here?

Questions my dad died, this is what i found in his house and i have no idea what it as

Post image
6.1k Upvotes

as the title explains, recently my dad passed. He was a very prominent figure in the fine art world (specifically 18th century paintings and drawings). Aside from this, he collected paintings and drawings mostly from this period and he also collected things, like very old art catalogues, that hold great artistic and historical value (but not so much economically). Anyways, i really want to know what this little thing is and thought maybe one of you guys could help me! As the photos i took show: It looks like a little wooden suitcase with i think asian style artwork on the side, when you twist the pin on the side it, that side opens up to tiny drawers! Maybe it’s just a little trinket that he thought was fun, but i wonder if there was a greater use for this? Thanks!

I think chocolate was very expensive at the time, looking at the tiny size of the box, I think a mouse or a rat was feeling a bit chilly and needed warming up. Found underneath a 500 year old floor in Suffolk, England, UK.

I am trying to help my brother find anything about this. It is really neat and has older looking hardware. From my research it looks like a mechanics table and not a drafting table like we initially thought.

Show and Tell Jenny Lind (Swedish Opera Singer) pre 1865 cast iron trivet

Pre 1865 is indicated by the raised wedge mark on the bottom. Also has the foundry molder shift marking raised letters under the leg. This is a very rare genuine original. Probably belongs in a museum.

This design was reproduced in mass. Very scarcely do you find originals!

Questions Late grand-father’s Schubert piano

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello! I dont know if anyone has any knowledge about old pianos at all, but this Schubert was my late grandfather’s beloved piano.

Kinda wondering if it was ever considered a ‘nice one’, if its condition would be considered good or not for older pianos, any info really tbh! (No appraisal in my area - its out of pure curiosity as were definitely keeping as its a family heirloom).

i simply got curious about it as i love the fun fact that my grand father was meticulously cleaning the keys with milk, and the animal legs are quite fun.

It also sounds very different than the old Heintzman piano i grew up with, but i have no idea which of the two brands would even be considered ‘nicer’ in the first place.
I know the name was discontinued when the brand got bought, and my father stated it is approx 100 years old.

Anyone has seen a similar one or has any thoughts about it at all?

Thank you!! :)

Discussion Sunny river scene with tollgate in Oegstgeest, oil on panel 71 cm x 101.5 cm, signed Ch. Leickert and dated 1853.

Hello guys I hope you are doing well

I would like to question about this painting by Charles Leickert named "Sunny river scene with tollgate in Oegstgeest" , oil on panel 71 cm x 101.5 cm, signed Ch. Leickert and dated 1853. Online resources claim that it had been shown on Richard Green fine paintings exhibition of 19th century dutch romantic paintings', 1974. So, I would be so grateful if you could provide me with a digital copy of the exhibition catalog of that year focusing especially on page 73 as online resources says that the painting is shown on page 73 of this catalog. The other strong evidence for documentation is the fact that this painting is Mentioned also in Harry J. Kraaij's monograph "Charles Leickert (1816-1907): Painter of the Dutch Landscape", on page 73, catalog number 50, with a color illustration. Knowing that Kraaij's book is one of the definitive references on Leickert's works, this will add significant academic validation and also This is crucial for valuation and resale because I want to authenticate this painting that I inherited from my father after his death 6 months ago. I will attach the front and back of the painting with artist signature.

Note : I think the new added frame is obscuring the year "53 at the end of signature.
