It may still be returned for reuse.

96

u/Axrxt76 16h ago

Yeah, been a lot of years, but used to be a $25 deposit on these.

51

u/mycoandbio 16h ago

It was $50 deposit for the last brewery I worked at a few years ago

52

u/Axrxt76 16h ago

Damn! Time to start robbing frat houses.

u/IronDuck117 15h ago

Seen some places make chairs / stools out of them by just putting some wood & a cushion on top

19

u/Specialist_enviroTX 15h ago

I have enough chairs and stools. Just want this thing gone and put to better use.

19

u/Jacktheforkie 14h ago

Stick it on Facebook if the company won’t buy it off you

-9

u/Specialist_enviroTX 12h ago

I don’t have Facebook

14

u/Jacktheforkie 12h ago

EBay, gumtree, Craigslist etc, get a friend to post it he’ll even call up a pub supply company and ask if they take empty kegs

14

u/Ranger_1302 11h ago

Then make an account or use a similar service…

25

u/SrGrimey 15h ago

But that’s literally the answer, look for any place or person that transforms them to chairs or stools and gift it.

-7

u/Specialist_enviroTX 12h ago

I’d like for it to continue as a keg again. I’m trying to find a place where they’ll take the keg back. I’m too far from shiner brewery. All else fails I’ll definitely let it be repurposed

22

u/Rommie557 11h ago

I’d like for it to continue as a keg again. I’m trying to find a place where they’ll take the keg back.

Soooo.... You know what you want to do with it, then. We don't K ow where you are other than state, and you're in a big one. I'm not sure how you expect us to help.

Start calling local breweries and bars, and see if anyone wants it.

94

u/SailTheWorldWithMe 15h ago

Put it out on a free group. Will be gone in minutes.

-10

u/Specialist_enviroTX 12h ago

What group? I don’t have Facebook or any social media aside from this..

14

u/Financial_Use1991 12h ago

Depending on where you live, put it in the curb with a free sign then if you can't return it.

-1

u/Specialist_enviroTX 12h ago

Hardcore HOA. Cannot put junk on the curb

7

u/ThePokemon_BandaiD 9h ago

then put it on the side of the road somewhere else lmao

9

u/SailTheWorldWithMe 11h ago

Well, Facebook has a lot of free stuff groups.

Craigslist has a "free" section.

5

u/BigFluff_LittleFluff 11h ago

Freecycle or Gumtree.

-14

u/Specialist_enviroTX 11h ago

Thank you! Might be the only good suggestion aside from back to a brewery

3

u/BarrelFullOfWeasels 4h ago

Craigslist is great. It's not social media, and it's really easy to use.

33

u/Dingyoung 15h ago

A buddy of mine makes them into outside stoves. He welds a pipe on it and some legs under it

30

u/carrburritoid 15h ago

It is property of the brewery. Minimal effort, drop it off behind a taproom or place that sells kegged beer.. Or just set it on the street and it will be scooped up quick by someone. It belongs full of beer again.

16

u/stewajt 14h ago

This. The keg deposit doesn’t mean it’s yours. Half bbl legs like this one cost the brewery around $150 each. This needs to find its way back to Spoetzl aka Shiner Breweing

-24

u/Specialist_enviroTX 12h ago

I’m in Katy Texas. I’ll hand it to you and you can hand it to them

15

u/Rawrs_sometimes 12h ago

No need to be snarky.

You should just be able to take it to a liquor store. They should be able to get it back to the distributor who can send it back to the brewery. In Indiana we have to put a label on the keg that says where it came from. There might be something like that that would tell you where it came from originally.

-20

u/Specialist_enviroTX 12h ago

Lmao snarky? Okay lady. Chill.

Thanks for the suggestion tho!

16

u/Rawrs_sometimes 12h ago

Imma dude. And I ain’t worked up.

Also maybe a bar. I guess really wherever has/sells kegs would be a place to take it.

-5

u/Specialist_enviroTX 12h ago

I apologize Sir, I truly appreciate your suggestions, and they’ve been duly noted.

1

u/Specialist_enviroTX 12h ago

I agree! That’s why I’m tryna get her used again as intended. Not chopped in half or turned into scrap metal. Shiner brewery is far from me.

6

u/cassinonorth 10h ago

Any liquor store will send it back to their distributor for you. It's totally normal.

13

u/htxmex 15h ago

Homemade BBQ grill or smoker

3

u/minimum_thrust 13h ago

That's what I did!! Works awesome.

24

u/MotoCult- 16h ago

Trade it in for a new keg?

-2

u/Specialist_enviroTX 15h ago

I have no use for this keg, let alone a new one.

25

u/RunawayHobbit 15h ago

Well, the ability to trade it in for a new one implies that the company will take back old used ones— so maybe you can take it to a place that does trade ins and say, keep it, I don’t need an exchange?

14

u/skwilson3 13h ago

There seems to be a misunderstanding. The new one will have beer in it.

-1

u/Specialist_enviroTX 12h ago

Perhaps if I was a shiner fan… I’m an IPA (and Texas) girlie and they don’t hit the mark for me on anything

7

u/indratera 15h ago

Cut open the top, clear it out, and make a rainwater sill, maybe collect rainwater and stuff! Idk if it's rainy there but it's a great way to save on say water for watering plants or whatevs

12

u/audaciousmonk 15h ago

Return it, post it on Craigslist or r/homebrewing for free

Someone will take it

6

u/tbrks93 14h ago

Start a slipknot cover band

3

u/Specialist_enviroTX 14h ago

Done. Just looking for my guitar and tambourine players now

5

u/princessbunny1216 15h ago

My old roommate put plywood on top and made it our coffee table 🤷‍♀️

5

u/weedhuffer 14h ago

The brewery would for sure want it back for reuse. Might even come pick it up for you.

13

u/Kottepalm 15h ago

If returning is not an option I'd make holes in the bottom and use it as a planter. You could grow a small berry bush in it.

4

u/T_ommie 15h ago

I had an old one in the garage. sold it on FB marketplace.

10

u/tcran420 15h ago

ULPT: use it to distill pure alcohol as 'hand sanitizer'. Watch for explosions.

3

u/Embarrassed_Lock234 14h ago

Had a buddy cut the top off and use it with a propane burner to boil peanuts we sold at FSU football games to raise money for our sailing club. Was a lot of fun.

3

u/Specialist_enviroTX 14h ago

There’s still beer in it, so I imagine it’s still pressurized. And I don’t have a torch to cut it. Sounds like fun tho

3

u/send_n0odles 13h ago edited 13h ago

To add to what others have said re: returning the keg to the brewery or at least trying to get it back into the bar circuit: a worrying number of breweries are turning to "recyclable" (* with a non-recyclable bag inside) keg types because returnable steel kegs like this go missing so often. As anticonsumptionists we should be aggressively discouraging people from repurposing any steel kegs as planters/coffee tables/chairs, because it gives the impression that it's totally okay to nick empty kegs from bars to do the same!

TL;DR please stop telling OP to turn this into furniture!!

3

u/Uphill-Mathlete 5h ago

Sounds like you want it gone, but want to do nothing about it. Best of luck to you.

4

u/ValidOpossum 15h ago

Get the deposit.

1

u/Specialist_enviroTX 15h ago

I didn’t rent this keg, so I cannot claim a deposit from a random keg in my possession

2

u/No_Welcome_7182 15h ago

Could you paint it and make it an end table? With a round wooden top? Or cut the top of, sand down the sharp edges, put a round top in hinges and use one storage ?

2

u/chevalier716 14h ago

Be like Slipknot and Metallica, turn it into a drum.

Home brewer’s use them for all sorts of things.

1

u/Northern_Gypsy 15h ago

I cut a pice of timber to fit the top, and routed the underside to fit nicely. Works as a good stool or little table.

1

u/InveterateTankUS992 15h ago

1

u/Specialist_enviroTX 12h ago

I’m 130lbs. This thing weighs about 80lbs. Might not be the Pilates routine I can keep up w

1

u/awkwardpenguin20 14h ago

Depressurize it and cut it into a bucket of holding

1

u/virus5877 14h ago

neatest upcycle I've ever seen is cutting it in half down the long axis and making it into a BBQ grill.

1

u/Pristine_Pudding6824 14h ago

Find a local Strongman gym. I promise, there is someone there who will take it.

1

u/BungalowHole 14h ago

Turn it into a still. Lots of people on r/firewater do exactly that.

1

u/KenyerJani98 14h ago

If you have an angle grinder, a welding kit and some metalworking skills you can make a lot of things out of it. I mean i see a lot of usable scrap metal in that thing.

1

u/HistorysWitness 14h ago

Make one of those outdoor urinals

1

u/Angelinmaking 14h ago

Could make it a seat

Grills smokers or whisky stills also usa just recently legalized home distilling

1

u/Noir-Foe 13h ago

Make it into a gas tank for a dune buggy.

1

u/dpr_jr 13h ago

Turn it into a grill

1

u/agangofoldwomen 13h ago

You can repurpose it to roll your lawn to even it out or make sweet lookin lines

1

u/Usuallyinmygarden 13h ago

I think it would make a super cool plant stand - picturing it with vines trailing down.

1

u/idanrecyla 13h ago

Coin holder

1

u/Surferbro 13h ago

You can turn it into a still if you want to take your homebrew to another, legally grey area.

1

u/positivitypete 12h ago

Sell it on fb market place. Strongman athletes would do anything for kegs

1

u/doggo_whirwind 12h ago

Return to the brewery or reach out to the local wholesaler/distributor to see if they could have it picked up or you can drop it off.

1

u/BehemothJr 11h ago

Saw it in half, put some hinges on it and make it a meat smoker

1

u/Fluid-Tip-5964 11h ago

Call places that sell keg beer. Ask for a keg of Shiner. If they sell it or can get it...

In theory, the system wants the keg if it isn't damaged and getting a deposit refund shouldn't be a big deal if it is obviously old and not stolen from a local bar or frat house.

1

u/Final_Serve5740 11h ago

Hit it with a baseball bat in a Slipknot cover band

1

u/qwb3656 10h ago

Local bar turned a few issues to a urinal. Pretty cool tbh

1

u/Salty-Jellyfish22 10h ago

Gas tank in a rat rod.

1

u/MarryMeDuffman 10h ago

Could this be used to purify water? Maybe a prepper has a project for it.

1

u/RunningTowardDreams 9h ago

Donate it to a strongman gym, cut it open and use it as a planter, paint a landscape on it and sell it at a local art coop

1

u/JustMeOldDad 8h ago

I'll pick it up tomorrow, I'm in Texas, too

1

u/JustMeOldDad 8h ago

I put stuff out on my curb, and most of the time, someone will stop and pick it up

1

u/dixiech1ck 7h ago

Call a distributor and see if they'll take it back

1

u/Tredicidodici 7h ago

I train strongman, would be a nice implement!

1

u/BrixaBargerd 4h ago

If you have the tools, saw in half lengthwise so you have 2 half cylinders, they make excellent bbqs if you have a frame for them. My grandfather did this for Portuguese BBQ.

1

u/manofathousandnames 1h ago

Paint it black, put it somewhere it will get sunlight, fill it with water. You now have a solar heater. We use old water jugs mostly, but I imagine it's just as effective with a metal keg. Alternatively, you could probably take it to a brewer, have it cleaned and refilled.

1

u/uxo_geo_cart_puller 16h ago

Sell it for the scrap steel

26

u/mycoandbio 16h ago

Do not do this. Kegs are the property of the brewery. You pay a $50 deposit to rent the keg but in reality, kegs cost the brewery about $150.

Also, it’s likely pressurized and could really hurt somebody if they tried to cut it open without properly discharging it.

Return the keg to the brewery.

17

u/Specialist_enviroTX 15h ago

It’s from the shiner brewery. And I’m no where near the brewery, but I truly appreciate your suggestion. I’ll call them up and see what they say to do. This keg ended up in my garage, in an inherited house (Houston area) so I’m just trying to be as responsible as possible.

6

u/Ambivalent_Witch 15h ago

Ask your local bar or restaurant. They can probably return it through their distributor.

3

u/TjokkSnik 14h ago

So I'm based in Europe, and I used to be a brewer, still working in the brewing industry. I bet you have some similarities over there, so here is my advice.

These kegs are property of the breweries. You really wouldn't end up with one unless someone took it home (not saying you did, but someone didn't return it). These kegs are reusable and expensive.

In most countries I've worked in, there's something like a "Keg watch", meaning if you drop this at a bar, the bar turns it in to whatever equalent you guys have of kegwatch, and then say kegwatch UK redistributes it back to the brewery. If the keg is not from the UK, then it would be sent to the company that deals with kegs in whatever county it's from.

If you want anti consumption and the keg gone. That would be my best guess.

Also, the keg is almost guaranteed to be under pressure so don't go drilling holes or cutting it without emptying it out first - if that's what you want to do.

English is not my native language, sorry for any errors.

4

u/WastingMyLifeOnSocMd 15h ago

If you can’t get it to the original could you call around and see if any local brewery would like to purchase for a very minimal cost?

4

u/DollarStoreDuchess 14h ago

Or home brewers. They live for these
