That’s not entirely fair. Not everything needs to be Uber expensive and top shelf. For winter wheels example, a set of quality manufactured safe wheels is all you need. You don’t need $4000 set of forged wheels for winter beaters.

Or me I do auto cross and track days so a spare set of wheels don’t need to be crazy expensive. OZ or enkei flow forged is absolutely plenty.

It’s not always about cheating out it’s that something things are hard to get or overly expensive.

my concern is the lack of options for the specific size.. for some cars regardless of the cost of the car there is a larger variety of price point to choose from. i’m having a hard time seeing the point of spending 6k on used rims since my current ones are perfectly fine, just wanted to find something with the look i prefer

i’m a woman, and not a car person, if that helps. i like cars, i don’t know much about them. this is my second car ever. i’m trying to learn, and not whining, just asking for knowledge here.

i can afford to spend anything from $300 to 10k on rims right now, i have no kids or partner so almost all my income is disposable. but is that a smart decision to spend on beater rims for NY winter? i don’t know!! i’m here to ask y’all very knowledgeable but clearly easily triggered car people for your precious opinions <3

I was at the dealership buying my car and I went on fb marketplace. I found a guy selling brand new oem rims with new rubber. Stickers still on. 2k Canadian!

Rims alone were 8k and rubber 3.

Always check marketplace!

look on tire rack to see whats there. 9 and 11 wide tend to be expensive. to get cost down get into flow forged wheels vs forged. tire rack has 4 of my wheels in OZ flow forged for 1600-1800$. there is a reason RPF1 are cheap vs a vett or gt wheels. production scale and way more sold.

Because winter duty exist. Or they are consumables for us we do track days. If I bend one and crack it when I hit a rumble strip, he just replaced it with another quality but value wheel.

My point is you don’t need to spend 6k 3 piece forged wheels for street use. Nice to have but not needed. A 1,800$ set of OZ wheels is fine. Used takes offs OEM wheels are great too.

I just don’t like OP getting shit on for looking for value wheels. It’s one thing that she was asking for cheap knock offs. But to find good wheels at a fair price shouldn’t have so much push back.

With my track use. I don’t get super expensive ones. As if I crack or bend one. I’m not out 1k. 250-500$ and go to my next event. You can buy quality at value prices.

Agreed. I think cheap has such a wide range of options. I think if you stick with name brands OZ-BBS-apex- used OEM take offs. You’ll be safe even with their value offerings.

I pointed out Mercedes doesn't even do that from the factory because the standard wheels are cast. They swore a lot and struggled to come up with anything coherent.

oh I must've misremembered the price, but my set of RS41s ran me $3600 for the set. Maybe it's due to the size difference. I don't have the car anymore though and run Neuspeeds on my RS3 now.

The best price I’ve found is a set of OZ wheels 1800$ flow forged on tire rack. I’ll need a small spacer up front to match the OEM offset. But for track wheels seems right.

I got a few OEM take offs I’m looking at but 1 feels like a scam. The other hasn’t replied to me.

Had one offer me wheels for fair price. But expect me to vemo him the $$. I said only PayPal G&S so I have buyers protection. He made sooo many efforts to avoid G&S. Soo many red flags

Thats the same size i have. Unfortunately anything in the 20” area are going to be expensive. Even cheap ones are $700 per wheel and they look like shit. I looked last year for an amg replacement wheel through Mercedes and aftermarket and the cheapest price i got was $3800 each. No tire.

You can get quality wheels without spending 6k from the dealer or Gucci wheels. Plenty of quality aftermarket like OZ, apex, BBS, enkei that make affordable but OEM + quality

Buy nice or buy twice is a good term for wheels. Or just stay with the OEM wheels, which were meant for the car’s specifications from the production line, and are always good quality and fitment with Mercedes or any main auto manufacturer.

Aftermarket wheels are not always great, especially with how they look on OEM suspension settings and how they compare in long term quality.

Why would Mercedes put a wheel on a car if it isn’t perfectly functional for the specifications of the car?

i think i worded my original post wrong. by “affordable”, i really just meant cheaper. i don’t see the reason to spend that much on it, so im looking to see if people have other options. i have a perfect set of original rims, just not my favorite style. i live in nyc, any rims is easily scratched and cracked, even from street cleaning alone.

it costs me nearly 4k every month to have two cars in nyc, which would probably cost someone that lives in west bumble fuck 2k at most. so yes, i’ve willingly made an expensive decision. i wouldn’t say im too broke for the car, but am i a cheap person? definitely.

another fallacy is that people who have the disposable income to buy these flashy cars are all car fanatics. i just like nice looking fast cars, but apparently not enough compared to some of these people on this reddit feening for cars they can’t afford and policing how i treat of my cars. im likely gonna drive it, have fun, and get rid of it in a year or two anyways, so i’d still only put my money where it counts for me.

Yeah, it's called getting a car you can't afford to own. Just because you can afford the car, doesn't mean you can afford to maintain / own it. The more expensive it is, parts are also gonna be like that. And you can't really complain it's hard to find something for your "exclusive" car - it's rare, parts are rare and companies will put "rare" tax on it.
