Barnard’s Loop and Orion Rising Above Delicate Arch’s Red Sandstone

Post image

Last January, I visited Arches National Park in Utah during the off-season. The snow on the red sandstone arches was breathtaking. Hiking to Delicate Arch was a highlight, but the return hike was scary due to the remote location and limited GPS signal. Witnessing the stars above Delicate Arch was special. The red loop in the photo is Barnard’s Loop within the Orion Constellation. It’s red because of hydrogen alpha gas, the most common gas (nebula) in the universe, which is invisible to the human eye but can be revealed with long exposures and specialized techniques.

Shot on a Canon 6D / Irix 15mm 25s / f2.4 / iso 3200

Kangaroo island is a stunning island off the coast of South Australia. I was lucky to live here for a few years and got treated to some amazing nights under the stars with no light pollution - an amazing location for astro!

Getting my first camera: decision paralysis

Hey everyone,

Sorry to interrupt this stream of awesome nightsky photos. I want to get into photography, especially landscape astro but also daytime landscape and timelapse. I've read a lot of info (maybe too much) and now have no clue what to do. The two cameras I've considered are the Sony a7iii and the Nikon z6ii. Every time the Sony gets brought up someone mentions the infamous star eater thing, but also how Sony has the best lens selection/bang for buck lenses available. There also seem to be a lot of people doing just fine with the Sony.

The Nikon also gets a lot of praise but less and more expensive lenses.

I don't really know what to choose at this point and thought you might give me some insights since landscape astro is what interests me the most.

I'm also open to different model suggestions.

Thanks!

I had a very rare clear night, but I was too ill to go outside in the cold. I had to see what I could get out of the window.

Foreground taken at blue hour f10, ISO 100, and 4”. Night sky is a stack of 10 images with some editing to make the milky way more visible. Somewhat new to photography so been learning a lot more about editing.

Shooting the stars at this crater was so much fun! I took the foreground during blue hour at f10, 4”, and ISO 100.

The stars were taken about an hour later at f2.8, 10”, and ISO 8000 (on an APSC camera)
