Unless they live in a bunker their whole life during this war there's always going to be eyes on their comings and goings. Once they have that it's just a matter of timing and opportunity.

Reminds me of a thing I like to say to people occasionally about computer security. You want to protect yourself from being the low hanging fruit.
If somebody with actual interest and resources has a reason to personally target you, there is precious little you can do to protect yourself that isn't completely unreasonable and incompatible with living a normal life.

u/Buy_Constant 10d ago
russians have killed people through Europe, cut cables in the sea, destroyed ammo depot (in Bulgaria), poisoned people. It is not very hard to do and Moscow is a very very big city that is very easy to get lost in. The important thing is how often such events occur, which is pretty often. Though, russia is much more obsessed with security, than western countries are and russian special services (such as fsb) follow people pretty closely

Maybe you’re thinking of the Chechen theater attack from like 20 years ago
12
u/Appropriate-Year-505 10d ago
That was the one with gas where most of the civilians died, right?
18
u/winky9827 10d ago
Indeed.
The crisis was resolved when Russian security services released sleeping gas into the building, and subsequently stormed it, killing all 40 hostage takers. 132 hostages died, largely due to the effects of the gas.
13
u/bearatrooper 10d ago
Typical Spetsnaz results. 10 terrorists, 50 hostages, 75 casualties, mission accomplished.

It’s not that hard for a state actor. You send a couple of trained agents into the country that speak Russian with the correct accent. They look and behave like normal Russians, you can’t tell they are from Ukraine. They blend into the population. But they are equipped by the state with money, tools and weapons. Nobody will notice them, because it’s impossible to keep an eye on everyone in a city filled with over 11 million people and while you’re at it you can also add a ton of tourists as well on top of it.
These agents will receive intelligence about the whereabouts of the target and seek him out. They start to watch him, observe his routine, all while appearing as if they are random people. Then one day they prepare a scooter with a bomb at some hideout, place that scooter at a specific location where they know the target will be located because of some routine they have observed and then they detonate the bomb from a distance when they made sure the target is close to the bomb by watching the scene from afar. Nowadays it’s not weird for a scooter to be placed in the middle of some sidewalk. These things are basically everywhere and have become ubiquitous. They are the perfect delivery system for a bomb actually, because they don’t attract attention. People have just accepted that they stand around wherever you go.
All of this is difficult for the average guy to do on his own, but it’s easy if you are a coordinated state actor with a lot of resources (intel, money, weapons, collaboration, fake identities that seem legit etc.). They got the men, they got the bombs, they got the money, they got the fake identities that are probably impossible to tell apart from real ones because they are issued by some real government body. How would you detect these guys if not by pure chance? Moscow if filled with random ass people that walk around everywhere. Are you gonna check and watch a million different people at the same time without any justification? You can’t. These people can come and go and you won’t be the wiser.
This is not the first hit and won’t be the last. But they are getting harder, because the targets are not completely stupid and know they could be seeked out like that. If enough hits happen, the targets will go to greater lengths to not just walk around in public.

Igor was the commander of Russian chemical, biological and nuclear weapons.
Oof
This comes just a day after Ukraine charged Igor of using chemical weapons on Ukrainian soldiers.
I love that Ukraine now uses deterrence to stop the Russians from doing stupid shit. It started with pilots and rocket launcher commanders, but they are getting more emboldened.

It could have been a similar principle - pager attack modified the batteries, replacing part of them with a bomb, with the battery itself also exploding.
I imagine that an e-vehicle might make for a way to do it on a larger scale, as the batteries are obviously much bigger.

Putin's center of gravity is not his military, it is his ability to influence the west. For him to prevail in Ukraine, he needs to isolate Ukraine from the US so he can have favorable odds on the battlefield.
Nuclear saber rattling is his way of causing the West to self-deter, so it makes sense he keeps playing that card.
8
u/bubster15 10d ago edited 10d ago
Except that he’s cried wolf so many times that now we have very good reason to assume he’s bluffing whenever he opens his mouth, and we’ve developed a very high tolerance for ignoring his threats.
There is a cost to saber rattling, and it’s political credibility. If nobody believes anything you say, they no longer care what you have to say. Decisions no longer have to be carefully measured based on how Russia will react, because we already know how they will react, the same as usual.
I think these threats have become more about their domestic audience. They want their citizens to believe everything is under control and Russia still holds all the cards.

543
u/deliveryboyy 10d ago
Probably a very marginal effect on the russian war machine as a whole, but an important thing nonetheless. Spreads fear among the brass and creates incentives to betray the regime. People like this are unlikely to go into open revolt, but buying a guarantee from Ukraine you're not going to be next for the low low price of a little sabotage? You bet.
Also justice.
388
u/hoorahforsnakes 10d ago
I think the most important factor here is that it happened in moscow. Until now, the russian top brass have probably felt pretty safe knowing they are nowhere near the front. If ukraine are able to succesfully execute targeted strikes on specific individuals within the capital, that makes things feel a lot scarier for them

People in dictatorships fall in line and retain power for two reasons. They agree with the dictator or they fear death or worse at his hands. If you have an equal fear of death from following or not following the dictator this often frees a lot of followers in positions of power to act as they might not have before. Like the southern rebels in Syria. They were allied with him because they feared his wrath. When that fear went away they rose up again
60
u/-Gramsci- 10d ago
It’s asymmetric warfare occurring inside Moscow itself. Successfully taking out a very high level target.
If it’s a one and done? Not that significant.
