Trying is fantastic. Apple hit a home run with this series in my book.

I really loved the first 3 seasons. Sadly, I did not enjoy S 4 at all. I think they should have titled it "Trying Too Hard." It felt aimless to me, sappy, maudlin, formulaic. Just all over the map. I got very tired of every scene ending in a group family hug. Who does that? Sorry, no disrespect intended toward your viewpoints. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Perhaps they'll make another, more cohesive S 5. Fingers crossed.

I’ve only watched S4 Epsiode 1 and I feel the same way! I wonder if they changed the showrunner? The director of Episode 1 was definitely new. I haven’t been able to find any info on what happened with Season 4 but already so disappointed…

u/Prong333 Jul 14 '24

I felt the same way as well. They had a great formula going in the first 3 seasons, and they certainly could have continued the newly adopted plot and post agency checkups, initial family dynamics, the rebelling "you are not my real mom!", etc...

Exactly the same for me. I renewed my subscription to Apple TV again, just to watch season 4. I’m not enjoying it at all. You got it so right, ‘Trying Too Hard’.

I came here looking for validation and got it. I completely agree and it's too bad because the first 3 seasons were fantastic. I have a hard time connecting with Princess' storyline, I feel like the time jump was too abrupt from one season to the other. Lastly, the whole Scott of the Atlantic and kids' soccer team side stories are so boring and pointless that I've literally fast-forwarded most of those scenes.

1

u/Familiar_Culture_278 Nov 26 '24

Completely agree. Was extremely disappointed by Season 4. The time jump was abrupt and they seemed to have completely brushed over Sandra's death despite her being a bigger character than Bev. The characters fell flat in Season 4; they were dull and uninteresting. The storyline just wasn't there. It was as if there were completely new writers who didn't see the first three seasons. Would have preferred they ended the show at the end of Season 3.

I agree too. I feel like season 4 is just a bit silly overall. There’s still some great dialogue but it takes several of the characters that they spent a while developing and giving them a joke subplot. For example, i didn’t really care for the drawn out sequence of jason and assistant manager in the escape room office. Why did the assistant manager get so much screentime without developing him? Where is erica? Why kill off sandra at this point? It also tried to play with the viewer a bit much, like how you didnt know who’d died in the first episode, or how it completely fakes out scott’s crash in the last episode. Just feels a bit disingenuous for a series that didnt need these tricks beforehand.

u/AStrangeNorrell May 21 '24

The caption is trying that’s for sure. Guess they haven’t seen Severance, Ted Lasso or Slow Horses yet.

36

u/Grantus89 May 21 '24

Trying is leagues better than Ted Lasso IMO(which I think fell off a lot after season 1), I think it’s definitely Apples best comedy.

12

u/[deleted] May 22 '24

I still think Acapulco is their best comedy.

11

u/thomasbdl May 22 '24

I love Acapulco as well! However, the second season of The Big Door Prize is giving it a run for its money as far as I’m concerned.

That being said, the simple fact that we can have a whole discussion about which comedy is better and still love everyone else’s favorite goes to show how utterly spoiled we are with Apple TV+!

7

u/[deleted] May 22 '24

I still need to watch Big Door Prize. Unlike Ted Lasso, Acapulco has managed to keep its funny, sweet, and sentimental combo consistent with each season. Ted dipped in quality with every season whereas Acapulco, Trying, and even Loot, is managing to maintain what people liked about it.

1

u/Traditional-Honey690 Jun 03 '24

I didn't know that the second season of the big door prize started. Normally I would came across somewhere but not this time. Thank you for mentioning.

2

u/[deleted] May 22 '24

Agree

3

u/Lasto44 May 22 '24

lol love both shows, but calling Trying a Comedy is a stretch. It’s light drama at best. There’s one or two half-laughs per episode.

Ted Lasso is funny af, fell off a little with the writing, but a comedy.

21

u/KennKennyKenKen May 22 '24

Comedy is subjective , but trying is categorically definitely a comedy.

7

u/afarensiis May 22 '24

I really liked Ted Lasso, but Trying is both a better show and a funnier show imo

17

u/Justp1ayin Relics Dealer May 22 '24

Trying is hilarious

5

u/DescriptionOrnery728 Jun 03 '24

"There’s one or two half-laughs per episode."

Insanity.

2

u/Lasto44 Jun 03 '24

Different tastes exist.

1

u/Flutegarden May 22 '24

Well they said comedy - Severance and Slow horses aren’t comedies. It’s definitely a top 3 for me.

2

u/AStrangeNorrell May 22 '24

Might want to read the caption again - they said best series, not best comedy. Or better yet here’s a quote from the article: “Trying remains the platform’s greatest, most underrated series.”

Severance and Slow Horses aren’t comedies, they are my examples of Apple series that are better than Trying - but Slow Horses in particular is bloody hilarious.

-1

u/DescriptionOrnery728 Jun 03 '24

Severance is highly overrated.

3

u/UKUSoptions Jun 06 '24

Series 4 is absolute garbage. The first 3 series are heart warming, gut wrenching. The series 4 is complete nonsense. They aren’t trying to adopt, they adopted 6 years ago. What is the point of it ? The plot is stupid.

3

u/imaferretdookdook Jun 09 '24

Agree. It is a shell of its former self. Totally jumped the shark.

3

u/Negative-Health-4838 Jun 21 '24

Totally agree. Scott was out of work scrounger season 3 and now is some oil magnet and trying to cross the Atlantic because his kid did a nice picture. What was an endearing storie in season 1-3 has turned into annoying rubbish. As if you rock up on a plane to Spain to chat to the kids mother.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 05 '24

He isn’t an oil magnet.

3

u/rebellious_gloaming Jun 26 '24

Hard agree. They do Scott dirty on his birthday and the show effectively endorses that, then Nikki steals an important life moment from Princess.

It should have ended after S3.

2

u/skatestretchsleep Jun 23 '24

Agreed. First three seasons were charming and enjoyable. End of S3 felt like a complete series. Fourth season is annoying and becoming unwatchable.

u/Longjumping_Finger13 Jun 19 '24 edited Jun 20 '24

Trying to serve the “princess” better?

3

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '24

What are their jobs now? Did Jason's mother die? Move to Alicante? I must have missed something.

Not a fan of the name Princess. It sounds like the name of a family pet.

4

u/pushdose May 22 '24

The show is fantastic, it gives me all the feels. Calling it the best show on Apple TV is a stretch though. Maybe the best comedy? Yeah. I can see that.

2

u/melancious May 22 '24

Ted Lasso and Mythic Quest would like to have a word

1

u/TatonkaJack Oct 02 '24

Watch Shrinking

6

u/North_Carpenter6844 May 22 '24

Best series? I mean, taste is subjective but come-on!! Apple has some truly fantastic series in comedy, drama, and sci-fi. Even if you think Trying is fantastic (I personally do not), would anyone with any taste even rank it at the best in its category? They certainly have worse comedies, but I don’t think it even cracks the top 3 of Apple TV comedies.

7

u/Justp1ayin Relics Dealer May 22 '24

It’s prob one of my favorite Apple shows, but obviously everyone has different tastes

5

u/Flutegarden May 22 '24

Definitely my top 3.

5

u/Amthomas101 May 22 '24

“Taste is subjective”… proceeds to make a statement about taste being objective.

3

u/North_Carpenter6844 May 22 '24

No, it is my subjective opinion that people who think that Trying is Apple TV’s best show or even best comedy show have terrible taste! :) you can take my post as factual statements because they are extremely true statements, but by definition everything I said is opinion based!!!

2

u/[deleted] May 22 '24

Love this show and love its back! All the feels

2

u/zeissman May 22 '24

Ahhhhh can’t wait to watch tonight. Praying for another season.

2

u/MeCritic May 21 '24

Wasn't as impressed by the first or second season. The humor wasn't my cup of tea, but the melancholic parts around the whole adopcy, dating, family or just ordinary life in London were the reason I will still be watching it.

1

u/AresOneX May 22 '24

Love the show and can‘t wait to finally watch new episodes.

1

u/The_ORB11 Jun 28 '24

I like the show but she grates on me at times. Can’t decide if it’s her overacting or the script, but the character is OTT annoying.

1

u/Ornery-Patience9787 Jul 02 '24

It’s taken a weird turn but I’m invested in the characters. Still oddly enjoyable.

1

u/Educational_Result18 Jul 03 '24

Season 4 failed for me. The plot is all over the place, I don't understand where they are living, what happened to Jason's mother, and what do they do for jobs? They seem to be unemployed. Personally I find Karen and Scott much more interesting. But there too, where did all their money come from? They seem to be suddenly rich. But again, these are just my opinions, I know there are those out there who feel differently and love the show...

1

u/scott_dj Jul 14 '24

First couple episodes of the first season I was a little bit questioning how good this was--but I heard the acclaim so I kept on. Then for about episode 4 forward it really hit its stride. After binging it all weekend I'm now about to start the 4th season!

1

u/No-Philosopher-4438 Jul 15 '24

It is shocking the contrast in 4th season! It went from one of the best shows to something you have on whilst being on your phone and even then it’s still painful to watch! So sad!

1

u/Clash-King-Clash Jul 31 '24 edited Jul 31 '24

Absolutely! The cast may exist for about 89% of the same actors, but the writing and direction seems to come from a completely different team... I loved the first three seasons, but I'm going to ignore season four... And what a total miscast for the part of Princess.... Nothing against the actress playing the part, but this is surely a huge mistake? Everything about this season seems forced, badly written and has a totally different feeling... Kind of like The Acolyte, another big disappointment for me, but that's another completely different story... And these are of course my personal opinions!

J’ai commencé cette série il y’a quelques jours. Je suis déjà ultra fan. J’adore cette série, tous les personnages on leur identité, ils sont touchanrs

1

u/inlifeyoudie Sep 30 '24

I found this season bizarre. Princess stealing credit cards, fraud, lying, getting the family to do her course work then lying again about exam results. Karen talking her husband out of doing something positive for his mental health only for her own selfish reasons. Loads of bad messages in this series

1

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '24

Rafe is an entertaining actor. His girlfriend in real life is often very annoying as an actress. I’ve never seen her before so I don’t know if she is a subpar actress or if it’s the show. I’m on season 2 and the constant adoption stuff gets tedious. When they went to the beach town it was nice to have less adoption exhaustion.

I binged this show this week and OMG SWOOOON ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT.. praying for a 5th season!

1

u/BJMRamage May 21 '24

And we can watch it tonight…after 9pm ET for us.
