Between not funding the Bundeswehr to the point of them having to train with brooms, criticizing NATO exercises in the Baltics, making their energy sector more reliant on Russia, I will not miss her.

People liked Merkel because she was for the most part very good steward of Germany's economy, and Germany has been beacon of prosperity and stability in Europe at a time when many other were floundering.
She lead fiscally responsible governments, and because of that European left and populist right hate her, because she did not allow trowing Germany's money at their pet projects and according to their ideals and wishes.
Pinning Putin on her is bit disingenuous, she didn't do much on military side of equations but it's not like any other country did more, but now she has become scapegoat for collective and continued Western failure in Eastern Europe and Caucasus.
She was only better then most in extracting value for Germany and she was looking out for interests of German economy.
Also same people are now allowing fascist in Azerbeijan free reign because they need their fossil fuels.
Merkel "shone" because the rest of world leaders were usually far worse at that time.
Compare her to Sarkozy, Holland, Berlusconi and Cameron and you can see why some people liked her.
