If only we had more disruptors.... :P

u/oGsMustachio Jul 09 '20
With AP getting the Ba'ul gear and Plasma getting a ton of love in the last year, I'm thinking Tetryon and Polaron are the next to get some attention.
4
u/ZCPett Fleet Admiral Jul 09 '20
Yeah I think the few that we have is not enough, how about 2 or 3 more ;P
11
u/Offlithium U.S.S. Ben Sisko's Motherfuckin' Pimp Hand Jul 09 '20
Well admittedly disruptors are the most common energy weapons in the Star Trek universe, used by not only the Klingons and Romulans, but many other species as well.
7
u/GreenSilverWing3 Jul 10 '20
True, they are probably the easiest to produce and most versatile energy weapons. Phasers are mostly used by federation because they can be modified and used in a variety of ways not always as weapons either.
10
u/Ducklinsenmayer Jul 10 '20
True, the in-canon explanation I always liked as to why the Federation doesn't use them, is because they have three different settings.
- Kill
- Kill with prejudice
- Kill and make it hurt4

One thing I don’t understand is why the kinetic cutting beam is red. Wasn’t it white in the episode?
20
u/SurfCrush Jul 09 '20
I watched that episode (non-remastered) just yesterday and it definitely white with a tinge of yellow. However, the yellow can be explained by the color shift and blurry pixellation that comes with how old TV broadcasts looked.
I will check it tonight after work on the remastered version but I bet someone will beat me to it.
3
u/JennaSTOHaze Jul 10 '20
look this pic, the cutting beam appears orange/red ..
The white-ish, yellow-ish, green-ish part, is just the tractor beam..
2
u/SurfCrush Jul 10 '20
Thanks for posting the picture. I didn't even think about that example, I was thinking of the one used on the Enteprise-D in The Best of Both Worlds: https://tng.trekcore.com/gallery/albums/s4/4x01/bestofbothworldstwo627.jpg
In a slightly clearer screenshot (from the HD remaster), the beam is clearly yellow: https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-MW6KKUq2Woc/WsxiYhl2KSI/AAAAAAAARrw/d4WDGNvVxhcRQ9X5ffk7nNCDsgDbG3OBACLcBGAs/s1600/bobwii32.png
There's also another possible version from Emissary, but this may be something way more than just a cutting beam since it basically erases the entire forward half of the Excelsior-class ship that approaches the cube:
https://ds9.trekcore.com/gallery/albums/1x01/emissary008.jpg
It seems like there'a cutting beam in the middle (like your example), but it seems like there's some kind of tractor beam around it (the blue part).
I'd love to see these variations of Borg weapons in STO someday.

u/CopperTubing Jul 10 '20
Taken a screenshot from "The best of both world" just now (on Netflix, so decently remastered).
Mix of very light yellow/green, definitely not red tho.

Awesome job. The only thing I would add is an asterisk or something to point out which beams have cannon Bolt animations because it is difficult to see here.
The ones I know of are the Kelvin and Linked phasers/disruptors. Not sure if there are any others.
6
u/Planetgrimbull Jul 09 '20
I’d more call them “bolt” animations rather than cannon animations but yes, this pic is great even if it does leave out that small tidbit
1
u/neok182 /|\ AD /|\ Jul 09 '20
That's a much better word to use actually.
2
u/Planetgrimbull Jul 09 '20
It just gets even more complicated when you take into account the covert phaser cannons have the same visuals as the kelvin phaser emitter beam arrays. But on the bright side it allows you to rock the vengeance with canon cannons!
2
u/neok182 /|\ AD /|\ Jul 09 '20
Ah so that's why I've seen some vengeance lately using cannons that looked like kelvin beams. I was a bit confused first time I saw that.

u/odinforever2000 Wells Temporal Science Vessel Jul 09 '20
But many of the beam images are from the Sto wiki. I uploaded those.

I apologize for using your work without citation or permission, I can remove the post if you want.
12
u/odinforever2000 Wells Temporal Science Vessel Jul 09 '20
Also it makes it easier for you to not have to justify the colors or beam types not present..Cuz..I ain't uploaded some yet..

Naw this is much easier for people to see...and the wiki isnt owned by me ;P

Plus the accompanying video shows off the animation (something I can't do in the photos)

u/ThonOfAndoria The Miracle Nerd | stowiki.net Jul 10 '20
I've been looking into adding webms of all beam and cannon visuals to the wiki (like I did for some random things, like the Sheshar). Also neat is that it can include sound, which is probably a little important when it comes to something like weapon choice.
Tbh the main thing stopping me doing it is that I don't own most energy types.
3
u/odinforever2000 Wells Temporal Science Vessel Jul 10 '20
I have most of them...Those I dont have..I have on tribble..because they are lobi items (and I havent spent my 1200 yet)..So lemme know.
2
u/MustrumRidcully0 Jul 10 '20
Oh, yeah, sound is really important. Some sounds can get really grating.

Ive been adding beam visuals for a while..This just never occured to me.

Until I looked closely at the picture, I thought it was just dozens of cans of different energy drinks placed next to one another.

u/PlagueOfGripes Jul 09 '20
I wish STO was both the sort of game where you could preview audio and visuals, and also the kind of game where the weapon type was irrelevant to its fx.
4
u/WiqidBritt Jul 09 '20 edited Jul 09 '20
Doesn't quite capture the crazy huge green lightning that comes with the Altimid Plasma.
Edit: Apparently that's only with the DBB versions. According to a youtube vid I found the standard arrays look more normal.
1
u/odinforever2000 Wells Temporal Science Vessel Jul 09 '20 edited Jul 09 '20
Yea...plus its a pain to show the visuals for all of the weapons types for 1 beam color.
1
u/WiqidBritt Jul 10 '20
True, it caught me completely by surprise the first time I fired one though.

If only the game code wasn't so sketty that they could let us space barbie our weaponry.

Are the regular phasers based off TNG or DS9/VOY? I always thought they looked a little too big.

Am I missing the rainbow one? Can't find it :s

The rainbow beams are Chroniton (8 on third row) and Antichroniton Infused Tetryon (5 on fourth row)

I seriously wish I could slot weapons cosmetically, so I could keep my set bonuses and have my space barbie too.
I'd actually start collecting weapons for this.

Can you do torpedos next? (Also why are the pulse phasers yellow? They should be red.)
2
u/HuevosBeEggs Jul 10 '20
Torpedoes might be harder to do; but that is how the pulse phasers appear in the wiki.
3
u/odinforever2000 Wells Temporal Science Vessel Jul 10 '20
I got all the torps :p I can send em to ya
3
2
u/odinforever2000 Wells Temporal Science Vessel Jul 10 '20 edited Jul 10 '20
Depends on the phasers. Some are gold..Some are red..some are blue..The red pulse phasers are Kelvis timeline
As for the torps..Photon and quantum have the most variants (in terms of looks)
Chroniton and Tricobalt use the same models..(mostly)
2
u/GreenSilverWing3 Jul 10 '20
I'd like to have the ability to change the visuals effects of any energy weapon except for perhaps the special weapons. That would be cool.

It comes with Andorian, Dewan, and Lethean pilot escorts and can put put on any ship with an experimental weapon slot.

Great job, OP!
Honorable mentions to two which are missing:
Advanced Fleet Phaser
Advanced Phaser (from Dil Store)
1
u/odinforever2000 Wells Temporal Science Vessel Jul 10 '20 edited Jul 10 '20
The Adv fleet phaser uses same beam animations as the regular phaser. I do have images for the adv phaser but those aren't very common due to how you gain access to them..
1
u/FudoJudo Jul 10 '20
I wish we could "disable visuals" for weapons like we can other things - it's so annoying having one blue line in there when I use the quantum phase set on my phaserboat

Though I'm not sure the Vaad Pols are correct.
I use these on my sci pilot escort. They look like railguns from Stargate SG1, and they're amazing.
CSV, grav well, and pilot maneuvers are a fantastic combo, and it is a truly staggering amount of dakka. So much pewpewpew.
1
u/Blue_sky_days @Sorairodayz Jul 09 '20
It looks more like their cannon visual rather than the beam. Still a pretty color though

u/odinforever2000 Wells Temporal Science Vessel Jul 09 '20
That was the beam uploaded to the Sto wiki.

1
u/Aaron_Hungwell Purveyor of Street Knowledge Jul 10 '20
The Kelvin Timeline phasers and Vaudwar shots are similar, but in your pic, you should likely show that it is more of a bolt than a beam.
1
u/odinforever2000 Wells Temporal Science Vessel Jul 10 '20 edited Jul 10 '20
The kelvin ones are a pain to get..Ill upload a better pic to the wiki
Also..Its hard to show the bolt clarity unless im closer to it.. Since bolts are long its rather hard to see any detail.

Is there a reason why the destabilizing tetryon is listed twice (one had correct spelling, the other does not)?

u/Lunaphase Jul 09 '20
Vaadwaur polarons are incorrect, they fire purple bolts not blue. Also missing debilitating polaron and morphagenic.
1
u/odinforever2000 Wells Temporal Science Vessel Jul 09 '20
I took the visuals for the Vad polaron. Things look alot different when you can slow or stop them mid beam.
1
u/Lunaphase Jul 09 '20
Thats the console clicky from the vaadwaur console on the manasa.
2
u/odinforever2000 Wells Temporal Science Vessel Jul 09 '20

There is no debilitating polaron.
Inhibiting is present tho.
I didnt bother with Morphogenic as it defaults to turret mode until you use a beam enhancement.
0
u/GSD_SteVB Jul 13 '20
I think the Vaadwaur Polaron image might be the cannon not the beam.
2
u/odinforever2000 Wells Temporal Science Vessel Jul 15 '20 edited Jul 16 '20
It was from the beam. I took that image...See alot of cool stuff when you can stop something mid stream/flight
Its also a shortened version of this image.

Does anyone know if there is any difference other than cosmetic. I mostly interested if one is better at shield damage if that's a thing.
