The real question here is how was this not a total dealbreaker when releasing this patch?

some bugs only appear on the live server and don't happen internally with dev accounts
last year there was a bug with Sphere of Influence where you couldn't complete a puzzle and the devs couldn't figure out what we were talking about it because it was working perfectly on their end but then Jesse loaded up his player account on the live server and was able to figure out what was wrong

As a dev, that seems to be a rather major issue to me.
How can I put out good code if I can't properly test it?

try r/programmerhumor for the answers.
Basically testing on a live server is impossible until something is live, for any application.
"Our Stage Env is exactly the same as prod" is a meme at any company doing software releases, for internal or external projects.
It's become even more of a meme now with so many 3rd party cloud services as the default back-end for internal apps and integrated systems.

Yeah, if only we had a test server so that these things could be tested before going live..
Oh wait.. we do have a test server.. and yes, it's broken over there as well.
They just don't test.. anything.
Ever.

I'd wait until they hot patch this or you might have to do it again after.

u/Pumawithapc 8h ago
So is the implication that if I just wait and don't log in until after they fix it, i won't have to deal with reslotting everything on my 30+ toons? Or am I screwed regardless so I might as well log in to go look at the new ESD?

u/fereldenvstamriel 7h ago
Correct me if wrong, but every time they fixed them, you still had to reslot traits
2
u/MontjoyOnew 7h ago
Correct. What is mostly in question is if we will have to repeatedly fix them if we do it before a fix.
2
u/MontjoyOnew 8h ago
Honestly there is no way of knowing whether the toons you haven't logged onto will be borked or not after a fix, provided we get one in the first place. You may not have to fix them. You may need to redo every toon anyway. /shrug

EDIT - DOES NOT WORK
Workaround:
Repopulate and save one of your loadouts. After you do this, your other loadouts will come up correctly.

u/CharlieDmouse 4h ago
1 we are experiencing problems with loadouts
2 profanity filter, filtering more words.
For I second I read that as, they were saying that because of #1, players broke the profanity filter by overloading it.
😁😁😁😁
Scotty voice: “It’s na good Captain, the profanity filters jus canna keep up with the sheer volume!”
Spock: Attempting to drown out all sounds with Klingon Death Metal. No effect Captain!
*Uhura pulls out her comm earpiece and it is smoking and a few small sparks begin to fly from it”
McCoy: “Dammit Jim!”
Kirk: Glares at McCoy That is NOT Helping Bones!

Not just loadouts, I don't use them on my characters, never clicked save button but traits have gone poof.
so glad I only come on for events.

Years and years ago, Cryptic was making a bunch of changes/updates/fixes to the loadout system, and one of the changes they made was giving every character an implicit loadout. So whether or not you've ever touched the loadout button, you do use loadouts on your characters because since that change, every character starts with a loadout.
This was a rather unpopular change, but I doubt they're going to change back anytime.

I know im just saying ive not actively made/saved any so it doesn't matter if you have any saved or not nothing gonna save you.

Good to know. I hope if you just don’t log in until they fix it you’ll skip the issue

Joke’s on you. My Romulan already forgets her traits every time I switch ships!

This is one of the reasons why I wish Phoenix Prize Ships, Lobi Ships, and Infinity Lockbox Ships, should all be reclaimable; when bugs like this happen and you have to discharge a ship and reclaim it to start over with a blank slate with no saved loadouts (since we don't have the option to delete loadouts).

I'd like to see confirmation of this bug from STO in their feeds and can someone repost here that STO has acknowledged it and is working on it. I normally wouldn't mention it but I have no idea who runs this game anymore nor what country does so there's an element of "trust but verify" now in force as far as I am concerned.

u/dese1ect 9h ago
I mean you could just go check their feeds… but it’s already in the patch notes:

Wow, that's already a lot more informative than Cryptic was when it came to acknowledging a major issue like that.
3
u/tarravagghn 5h ago
I see no change. Cryptic always eventually acknowledged. There is also nothing wrong. I'm fine with it. It's just nice to see they are aware and working on it.

u/wutherspoon 4h ago
Not always, there were several game breaking bugs over the years that went unmentioned by Cryptic. Case in point the 'skills invalid' bug that popped up numerous times over several patches, which was only officially acknowledged in an offhanded way on a stream after they found the problem and patched it. It was nice to get the info about how it happened, but would have been nicer if Cryptic sent out some communication about it when it was happening. There wasn't even a single tweet about it.

u/tarravagghn 5h ago
At the time of my post, there was nothing. Now, there's acknowledgment in their news feed and even social media. My comment was prior to all that.

I guess we'll still have to fix them and the traits after they patch it. I'm teetering on using it as an opportunity to tidy things up and never logging in again. ESD looks wrong. It doesn't look like something from any Star Trek universe.

It doesn't look like something from any Star Trek universe.
I mean it's an almost exact replicate of the old ESD just with additional arms and docks, Starbases with the same basic layout have been in Trek ever since The Motion Picture

So I've been playing since before Legacy of Romulus. With an update this big, this was about the second safest bet to make. The safest bet to make was that the servers were going to crash since the server hamster would die of a heart attack after the update.

We have a little surprise for all of you PC Captains they said.
Unfortunately, that kind of stuff is not rare when there's a major code branch update.
