Resources and Inspiration My work from home office setup
galleryEverything I own is in this tiny vintage camper, and none of it is fancy or expensive. My clothes are all thrifted, most being over 5+ years old. That laptop in pic 2 is 8+ years old.
I'm an artist, and I set up my painting studio outside to work on commissions. I'll take breaks by sitting with my feet in the water. Most of the unfun stuff for the business is done on that laptop, and the view makes it that much more peaceful.
I don't make a lot of money, and I suspect I never will, but I'm happy and my life is simple and peaceful

Resources and Inspiration Everyone says it’s sad beige, but beige makes me happy
I love keeping my room super simple and calming. It helps me become zen after being overstimulated by the world on a daily basis. That and it’s easier to clean ✨

Resources and Inspiration Update on yesterday’s post!
galleryWhile I definitely did not ask for anyone’s opinion on how to “fix” my “sad beige” bedroom, some of your input inspired me! Props to most of you for being supportive and kind! I added a few plants to make it more comforting ✨ If you think it’s sad and depressing, please keep your comments to yourself. I was simply sharing one part of my life that makes it very easy to live simply, and it makes me happy! I was trying to inspire other people who wanted to live simply and didn’t know where to start. 😊

Resources and Inspiration What are some things that other people consider boring but you enjoy?
I really enjoy taking a ”trip” to grocery store, exploring it and buying simple and clean ingredients, walking home, and then making a meal at home.

Resources and Inspiration Has anyone here "left it all behind"?
Have any of you left it all behind and started over or moved away or etc? If so, what's your story? What did you leave behind, and what finally gave you the guts to do it?
I am 45, living in NYC, really tired of the meaningless 9 to 5 work, and tempted more each passing year to move away somewhere simpler, cheaper, and live a life doing the things I actually enjoy--music, exercise, hiking, travel, reading, meditation, etc.
But, I also know I have to save for retirement and all that. I definitely don't have enough to retire on and I don't own my home.
I'm probably just venting here, or looking for camaraderie, but I love hearing stories from those who actually pulled the trigger and found a new path. So please do share if you have or know of such a story.
Did you quit your crap corporate job to homestead, or move to SE Asia and live cheaply by the beach, or go on a long bike tour of S America, or move to the mountains and spend all day doing creative stuff?
If so, how's it going, how do you make it work financially, what do you like/dislike about it?
If you haven't done such a thing yet but want to, what's holding you back, what will it take to make the leap, what do you really want to be doing with your limited time on Earth?

Resources and Inspiration How to feel rooted
I started reading a new book called ‘This is Where You Belong: The Lost Art of Staying Put,’ that would probably resonate with a lot of you who care about simple living. It’s about place attachment. The author shares 10 simple behaviors to put down roots to help you love where you live.

Resources and Inspiration My partner and I made a list to live more sustainably until the next year.
galleryHello guys!
My partner and I decided that we would like to make changes in our life so that in future, we live in a way that is more friendly towards our planet.
Here are the tips I cherrypicked from Rob Greenfield's website of 100 tips to live more sustainable. I picked only those that are realistic to our lifestyle/location, but everyone can make their own list. I printed it out and I stick it to our fridge, so that we are reminded of it every day.

Resources and Inspiration What movies have motivated you to adopt simple living as a lifestyle?
I just watched Perfect Days and loved it. I know some of you also recommended Patterson. The recommendations can be for anything simple living related, it doesn’t have to be a similar style to these.
EDIT: Wow! Thanks so much for all your input 😀. You can include documentaries too!

Resources and Inspiration I heard this great parable last night about living more with less.
An American businessman was standing at the pier of a small coastal Mexican village when a small boat with just one fisherman docked. Inside the small boat were several tuna. The American complimented the Mexican on the quality of his fish.
“How long did it take you to catch them?” The American asked.
“Only a little while.” The Mexican replied.
“Why don’t you stay out longer and catch more fish?” The American then asked.
“I have enough to support my family’s immediate needs.” The Mexican said.
“But,” The American then asked, “What do you do with the rest of your time?”
The Mexican fisherman said, “I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, take a siesta with my wife, Maria, stroll into the village each evening where I sip wine and play guitar with my amigos. I have a full and busy life, senor.”
The American scoffed, “I am a Harvard MBA and could help you. You should spend more time fishing and with the proceeds you could buy a bigger boat, and with the proceeds from the bigger boat you could buy several boats, and eventually you would have a fleet of fishing boats.”
“Instead of selling your catch to a middleman you would sell directly to the consumers, eventually opening your own can factory. You would control the product, processing and distribution. You would need to leave this small coastal fishing village and move to Mexico City, then LA and eventually NYC where you will run your expanding enterprise.”
The Mexican fisherman asked, “But senor, how long will this all take?”
To which the American replied, “15-20 years.”
“But what then, senor?”
The American laughed and said, “That’s the best part. When the time is right you would announce an IPO and sell your company stock to the public and become very rich, you would make millions.”
“Millions, senor? Then what?”
The American said slowly, “Then you would retire. Move to a small coastal fishing village where you would sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids, take a siesta with your wife, stroll to the village in the evenings where you could sip wine and play your guitar with your amigos…”

Resources and Inspiration Cutting my own hair. You should too.
About 8 years ago one day I got sick of constantly having to make an appointment at my barbershop and actually going there and spending my time and money for a haircut, so I decided I'm gonna do it myself. I bought a simple 60 euro plug-in machine. On the beginning I was clumsy but after the 4th or 5th grooming I was getting used to it. I couldn't make my hair stylish, so I just cut it all to basic army style. Turns out I look even more masculine with that hair, and my friends and girlfriend liked it even more. 8 years in and I calculated that I saved about 3400 euros and 200 hours of my life just cutting my own hair. I also started cutting hairs of my friends after a while, earned me a lot of rounds of free beer.

Do you have any other suggestions? Maybe some other sub Reddit, a YouTube channel, a book…
Let me know and thank you so much.

Resources and Inspiration Simple living does not necessarily mean minimalist living
99% of the time, yeah it does, but it doesn’t always mean to have as few things as possible. Sometimes, some things makes life easier.
For example, if you have a hobby like cooking, it would be worth getting a peeler. No need to force yourself to just use a knife for the sake of not having stuff.
The other thing that would be worth to buy imo is some organizing materials. It doesn’t have to be a planner, it could be something like cable organizers, or a coat rack.
So yeah, I would say that it’s okay to buy some things while simple living haha

Resources and Inspiration Our addiction to success is making us sick
I came across and was reading this. As an aside, coming from the uk, i sometimes do wonder why we as a country don't learn from scandinavian countries like denmark meant to be the happiest country in the world...in terms of connecting with nature, making time to slow down, etc.
Very interesting. I would welcome your thoughts:

Resources and Inspiration Simple living with a film camera
galleryI bought a film camera a few months ago as a way to help me disconnect from my phone while still being able to capture life’s moments. With my phone, I’d take multiple pictures of the same thing, immediately look at them and critique them, and do retakes if I felt like I needed to. With a film camera it encourages me to focus on quality over quantity. I love developing the film a few weeks later and being reminded all over again of these memories. I find myself going outside more and feeling inspired to look around. Film sure does a great job of romanticizing the day to day.

Resources and Inspiration Virginia Woolf on appreciating without buying
I am reading "Street Haunting" now and came across this passage, which I thought others might enjoy:
"Passing, glimpsing, everything seems accidentally but miraculously sprinkled with beauty, as if the tide of trade which deposits its burden so punctually and prosaically upon the shores of Oxford Street had this night cast up nothing but treasure. With no thought of buying, the eye is sportive and generous; it creates; it adorns; it enhances. Standing out in the street, one may build up all the chambers of an imaginary house and furnish them at one's will with sofa, table, carpet. That rug will do for the hall. That alabaster bowl shall stand on a carved table in the window. Our merrymaking shall be reflected in that thick round mirror. But, having built and furnished the house, one is happily under no obligation to possess it; one can dismantle it in the twinkling of an eye, and build and furnish another house with other chairs and other glasses."
I've been trying to consciously shift my attitude when I am in the presence of beauty - whether it be natural beauty, beautiful things, or beautiful people - from an acquisitive/envious/grasping sadness to an appreciation for the beauty as it is, without needing to possess it. I imagine owning the thing, enjoy the pleasure of the thought, then release it. I think of it as shift my weight from the balls of my feet (my natural posture) to my heels. I found this passage affirming and thought I would share! Full essay if anyone's interested.

Resources and Inspiration Decluttering 101
Hi. I hope everyone is doing okay. I just want to share a note which may be of benefit to others.
I saw it posted on social media some time ago and had it saved for future reference. I've decided to share it here since I saw someone asking for advice on how to declutter their living space. Let it also serve as a guide for those who might find themselves in the same situation in the future.
That is all, thank you and good-bye.
Toxins of the house include:
- Things you no longer use.
- Clothes that you don't like or haven't used in a while.
- Irreparable objects.
- Plants that are dead or sick.
- Old receipts, magazines, books, cards and notes.
- Stuff of all kinds calling the past.
- If you have children, toys and possessions that are not being used, that do not work anymore or can't be repaired.
With cleaning them out:
- Overall health gets better.
- It promotes productivity.
- Relationships get better.
- An increase in reasoning capability.
- It improves your mood.
Questions that might help with cleansing:
- Why am I saving that?
- Do I really need it?
- How will I feel if I release that?
Ways of discarding:
- Donate.
- Bequeath.
- Repair/Sell as-is.
- Throw away.
Do a general cleaning and use boxes for organization. Start with drawers and cabinets and segregate each piece, do everything at your own pace.
- Trash
- Arrangements
- Recycling
- In doubt
- Gifts
- Donation
- Sell
As you cleanse, watch what changes in you.
As we clean our physical house, we also establish order in our mind and heart.
Practice detachment from material things that just fill your space and you'll see how you'll be able to prepare and do the same in more challenging yet familiar situations.

Resources and Inspiration Simple Living Youtube suggestions?
I'm looking for simple living channels that are along the lines of Benita Larsson (who I adore). More like "a day in the life of" with maybe some tips along the way. I just discovered Olin Brix but he's very new & green. Some similar ones are maybe BenjiPlant, Eric Wang, Nick Garafalo, Nick Houchin but not exactly what I'm looking for. Specifically I'd like to try to find men that do this sort of thing. But not the out in nature camping off grid thing. I know of Gabe Bult, Matt D'Avella, but they're too over the top and frantic to me. I like Choki but sometimes the silence is deafening. haha. Used to enjoy Hueguh but he disappeared.

Resources and Inspiration One of my favorite simple joys: 2-hour no-knead bread recipe from Jenny Can Cook
galleryI want to share my favorite bread recipe with you all: the 2-hour no-knead bread recipe from Jenny Can Cook. As a student without a lot of time to spare, this recipe has been a godsend. I cannot overemphasize how much extra joy this bread brings to my day-to-day homemade sandwiches and toast. For a long time, I didn't have my own Dutch oven, but her tip to just use two large casserole dishes always worked perfectly for me. I would not consider myself a skilled baker (yet), but I have yet to make a loaf of this that has turned out badly.
It's important to aerate the flour as she instructs (aka, stir it around to fluff it up a bit) before scooping, since that will keep it from getting too dense. Overall, though, it's been a very forgiving, simple, and comparatively quick recipe I can count on. I like to do the folding part of the recipe right in the bowl it rises in (sprinkling flour as I go) to keep cleanup minimal. Since most of the 2 hours is spent just letting the bread rise or bake in the oven, I like to start it when I have some laundry, cleaning, or other chores to do at home.
One of my favorite simple delights is cutting off a slice or two to dip in a bit of olive oil and balsamic vinegar as a snack. It always makes me feel like I'm living the height of decadence :)
