In an ideal world maybe, its not that simple an issue. Russia is the largest gas exporter in the world, they have more in gas than anyone. They control the price.

Russia and especially Putin kept gas prices artificially low so we all became dependent, industry demands so much we could not just find and supply as easily or as cheaply. Now he wants his wicked way with Ukraine they are punishing Europe over it as we cannot easily diversify.
