Imagine if we said that once you’ve been convicted of a felony you no longer had the rights of free speech or trial by jury. And then after you had served your sentence and completed probation that you would have to apply and ask a judge if you could have those rights back, and maybe have to wait ten years depending on your state. It makes no sense.
We need to move back to the pre ‘68 model of prohibited people being those who are convicted of crimes of violence.

You can be a “felon” for being convicted of driving with a fake license plate

You don't have to be a convicted felon to become a prohibited person. You lose your rights of convicted of a misdeamer that has a potential sentence of 2 years or more. Keep in mind, you don't have to be sentenced to 2 years, just that the punishment can potentially be 2 years or longer.
