"Coloring Products: Kits or tools used to make guns bright or disguise them."
how tf do you ban spray paint?

u/PokeyDiesFirst Nov 27 '24
You don't. I think Michiganders need to write in to the bill's author and sponsors and ask why they've wasted taxpayer dollars on a bill that has more holes in it than Swiss cheese.

u/ClearAndPure Nov 27 '24
How about people with kids around just lock up their guns… simple solution.

u/dirtysock47 Nov 27 '24
They already have safe storage laws lol.
This is just proof that anti-gunners will never stop, so there's no reason to compromise with them at all.

u/sailor-jackn Nov 27 '24
It’s a fundamental constitutionally protected right. There is never a reason or justification to compromise with them, in any way. That’s how you lose rights. No compromises anymore, ever again. That’s the only way we can secure and protect our rights.

First, it was black guns "bad", now it's colored guns "bad". We need to cut the racist lingo. We try to be more DEI and have more colors but they don't like it

What counts as "deceptive" and what doesn't?
31
u/MunitionGuyMike Nov 27 '24
Per the bill:
“‘Deceptively colored firearm’ means a firearm of which a substantial portion of the exterior surface is any color other than black, brown, dark grey, dark green, silver, steel, or nickel.”

u/UsernameIsTakenO_o Nov 27 '24
So tan/FDE gets fucked?

Nov 27 '24
Tan is brown
16
u/UsernameIsTakenO_o Nov 27 '24
Gray and green are specifically mentioned as only being allowed if "dark gray" or "dark green". What makes you think brown gets to include everything from chocolate to sand?
3
u/PuffPuffFayeFaye Nov 27 '24 edited Nov 27 '24
Well the answer is because it doesn’t specify.
Of course I don’t see how one defines a “dark” color either. But I guess that is what courts are for… to assess if the shade of green on your gun is too light to be permissible.
1
Nov 27 '24
I wouldnt expect a Michigan judge to declare fde counts as brown though. The rulings are always going to be the most strict interpretations possible.
1
u/PuffPuffFayeFaye Nov 27 '24
That’s an entirely different question. I’m with u/Live_Rags33 on this. If the law is written to narrow greens and grays to their “dark” variants then excluding the narrowing language to browns makes including tan entirely reasonable. What other color would tan fall under than brown?
0
Nov 27 '24
Why wouldn’t any anti gun judge say tan is tan brown is brown? Idk I guess we’ll see but I’m not optimistic on this.
0
u/PuffPuffFayeFaye Nov 27 '24
The asked was question was, “What makes you think brown gets to include everything from chocolate to sand?” and the answer that questions that the law doesn’t place a boundary on how dark of a brown is acceptable. Simple as. I’m not playing the “how stupid can a judge be” game.

I guess that disqualifies my gold-plated AK then.

I guess a golden tigerstripe Desert Eagle is “deceptively coloured”, whatever that means. You’d never know it’s a firearm I guess!

Police officers say guns that don’t look like guns could make dangerous situations even riskier. Imagine... a disguised weapon sneaking into a public place undetected.
Ah, yes... much easier to sneak guns in undetected when they're (checks notes)... brightly colored.

u/GU1LD3NST3RN Nov 27 '24
So like no more camo paint? Because that’s descriptively colored by design.

u/Mindless_Log2009 Nov 27 '24
Old controversy. Back in the late 1980s-early 1990s Springfield Armory made some pistols based on the CZ 75 (P9, I think?) with hard finish crazy colors. Kind of a combination marketing gimmick and appeal to women in shooting sports.
There was some controversy over it but I don't recall any legislation prohibiting colorful firearms.
That could potentially impact finely polished and blued guns, which can appear distinctly dark blue in the right light, rather than black.
And there's color case hardening, which dates back to the 19th century or earlier.
And exotic woods for hunting rifles were semi popular back in the 1960s-70s. The eccentric Herter's catalogs featured some exotic wood rifle stocks that ranged from gorgeous to bizarre.

Oh, and what a fucking surprise: police are exempt. Does the SWAT team need their MP5's cerakoted in Hello Kitty colors?

u/Pajama_Samuel Nov 27 '24
Step 1. Ban scary black guns.
Step 2. Make all guns scary black.

”-Coloring Products: Kits or tools used to make guns bright or disguise them—
Soooooo we banning spray paint now?

u/tricententialghoul Nov 27 '24
Jesus christ why is my state turning into commiefornia. We used to be pretty pro gun, and it slowly changed and got worse with Whitmer.
Obviously this isn’t a crazy deal, but on top of safe storage, red flag, and no longer being able to buy a gun without a CPL or license, this can fuck off.

u/906Dude Nov 27 '24
It's disheartening, isn't it? I remember when the sentiment in Michigan was much different.
7
u/PokeyDiesFirst Nov 27 '24
Ah yes, the good old "I have to justify my authority by doing pointless shit that will cost taxpayers tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars so I can look like I'm doing something useful, while in reality accomplishing nothing" shtick

Wait, is there a sudden crime wave where people are hiding and using “brightly colored guns?”
1
u/sailor-jackn Nov 27 '24
So, what about polished stainless steel revolvers? They are pretty bright.

u/aedinius Nov 27 '24
Sneaky Guns: Firearms disguised as things like pens, cell phones, or other non-gun items.
Aren't AOWs already highly regulated?

u/Xiver1972 Nov 27 '24
Duhh... if guns don't look scary, how can they scare people with pictures of them?
1
u/10gaugetantrum Nov 28 '24
So gun companies make guns for everyone to exercise their rights. Some people may pick an abnormal color gun because it fits their personality or it may fit the way they identify themselves to the rest of the world. (conservatives, liberals, and everyone in between) Now a communist wants to rob peoples ability to choose a gun that fits the way they feel. Damn commies.
1
u/Auradria Nov 28 '24
Ask yourselves who are the people that mostly go for the fancy colored guns? Guess what gun I'm looking at as a female a cute purple Kimber... Don't tell me they are trying to dissuade the female population from buying firearms... I don't want the boring black gun. I even want to customize my black gun so its not just black.
This legislation seems so stupid. This is how they are going to start our "gun ban" put so many stipulations on them people cant have them/ use them like they need to and it'll be an elective "gun ban" without calling it a gun ban.
1
u/fourbetshove Nov 28 '24
I really like the people’s choice to have what they want. I do have a fear that the increase in the brightly colored gums will lead to more shootings that use the reasoning of “they had a gun”.
Ya, a neon green plastic squirt gun, but it looks very much like this actual neon green Glock 17.
I remember seeing a 12 ga shotgun covered with a super soaker type plastic shell and thinking it was going to lead to accidental death.

My first thought was.... what happens if I already own several perfectly legal firearms that happen to be finished in pretty colors?

u/Mike0311OneFive Dec 05 '24
What’s deceptive about a pink gun? The color doesn’t change what it is.

Typical lame duck Democrat overreach. "Quick, let's ram this through before we lose the majority in the state House after the 2024 election". Democrats are most dangerous when they have nothing to lose.

u/and-i-feel-fine Nov 27 '24
I'm okay with this. Fewer guns that look like toys mean fewer kids with toy guns get killed by cops or civilians who mistake toy guns for real.
A gun is a weapon. It's not a toy, it's not a fashion accessory, it's not a Halloween prop. Your right to bear arms is not endangered if you can't cosplay Francisco Scaramanga with a live weapon.

u/PokeyDiesFirst Nov 27 '24
Every kid in general over the age of 7 knows what a gun looks like, brightly colored or not. This bill will save exactly zero lives.
4
u/DarthKnoob Nov 27 '24
While you’re at it, cars aren’t toys or fashion accessories, we should limit them to 3 basic colors, black, tan or white, and there are far to many sizes and styles these days. Clothes don’t need to be brightly colored or have patterns to keep you covered/warm. Hell if it’s based on needs, everything could be black, tan or white and function just fine.
Seriously? Go piss up a rope and dangle it over your face.

Its amazing the hoops some people will jump through to justify gevernment policy that is stupid, assinine, and usxeless.
