I’ve just started this journey. I have a household of 7 to prep for. This week I’ve scheduled the electrician to set up what’s needed to make the back up generator easy to use, powering the essentials and not the whole house. I’ve also created the list of items I’ll be storing for our first target: 3 days of supplies. I also created a preppers wish list on Amazon for stuff I’ll want but isn’t as urgent.

Organised my "get me home bag" in case the UK weather turns bad (again!) and I either have to walk home for 5 miles or abandon my car due to road conditions. This will stay in the car until March/April from this evening.

Contains: warm clothes, hat, gloves, spare socks, small first aid kit inc foil blanket, carton drink, protein rich food/cereal bars, sweets (Haribo!),torch, de-icer for the car, pocket multi tool, list of phone numbers, some cash as there's a filling station on the way home where I've purchased hot food on route and oddments like hand wipes, tissues, etc.

I even have a 9v to 5v battery convertor and a few 9v batteries in case I need to charge my mobile and a spare button cell for my car keyfob.

When I travel by train, I'll often pack similar into a spare rucksack including a change of clothes in case I'm staying overnight somewhere for work.

It was my informal inventory week. I do this roughly each quarter. This month we'll hit up black Friday deals (only on consumables, but there are surprisingly a lot of sales on those). Next month we will gift a lot of homemade items that are taking up space (I do soaps, liqueurs, extracts, and a few other handmade items). We are also likely to receive some items (wild rice and maple syrup, which we look forward to every year). January I place orders with a few online sellers (bulk foods.com and Yami for sure, maybe others if there are sales). So this week I noted what we have, have used, and have room for.

My husband did our pre winter maintenance (warm fall, this is usually done earlier). I did finally get the winter car kits in lol

Double checked meds to make sure we're inside reasonable dates for a while on OTCs. Masks, gloves, etc. we're still good on. Need to buy batteries for oral thermometer. All available jabs have been got/scheduled. Not really planning much else for bird flu purposes.

Fire extinguishers and smoke/carbon monoxide detectors good. Generator is good. Got enough of all the fuels.

I don't have specifics for you, sorry. I do a bunch in person and do a quick sweep of a few websites lol! But r/preppersales has links to non perishables sales often and will post black Friday goodies I'm sure!

Got my deviated septum repaired. Step 1 to curing my sleep apnea.

2

u/mcoiablog Nov 26 '24

I had mine done 2 years ago. I'm working on losing weight too. Good luck

1

u/Traditional-Leader54 Nov 26 '24

Thanks. You too. Working out more is the plan after the sleep apnea is corrected or at least lessened.

Working on topping off my pantry with things like hot sauce, maple syrup, jams, fruit, and home canned beans for quick meals, a couple hundred pounds of rice, and some all purpose flour. I’ll do a couple of cases of home canned diced chicken and of course turkey broth later in the week. Also planning to do a test run of our cat food recipe. Now we freeze in small containers for day to day use from our 40 pound batches but I want to get some shelf stable. Probably a couple canner loads just to try out adding the vitamins to in half pint quantities at serving time to make sure the finicky felines will approve. Doesn’t sound like a traditional prep but also scheduled an appointment with a vet nutritionist to get a few recipes formulated for our large breed puppy now that he’s gotten to a year. A bit concerned about factories having staffing and inventory issues in the new year.

Friend helped me quarter up a nice whitetail. We do a 50/50 grind with pork butt and put most into burger, the rest I make into summer sausage, sticks and some jerky. Been loading up on pork when I can get it for under $2, which is often. Also have 3 beaver that I’m pelting out and will tan. Bomber-style caps in the works once I get the patterns. Beaver meat is good and will also go into sausage.

Lots of device charging ahead of storm Bert:

Charged the car battery jump pack. Filled the car fuel tank. Charged the solar batteries. Lowered the tarp in the garden. Charged all the head-torches. Chucked the usual packets of paracetamol and ibuprofen in the basket at the shop. Charged the HT's and did a radio check with my folks on the other side of town.

Thankfully Bert wasn't too hard on us in the end - just road closures (only one road out of town that wasn't closed due to floods) and I was able to stay put. Feels good to feel prepared though.

I am taking advantage of every food sale. HEB had pork for between 0.97 and 1.29 per pound all week and buy a ham get a free turkey for the past three weeks. I have added about 40 pounds of pork butt and carnitas, 4 hams, 4 free 12 pound turkeys, and 4 pounds of pork breakfast sausage. Leg of lamb was cheap at Costo, so got a 5 pound leg of lamb. Progesso soup was $1.20 per can at Food King, so I went twice and bought the gluten free varieties. Also at Food King we purchased some unusual types of beans and some preprepared rice for $1 per package - I have to eat gluten free and I use these with tasty bites in emergency travel bags. Currently looking for bargains on chicken and holy moly is it expensive right now. Did not realize eggs are back to $6 per dozen in my area. But I'm patient - 3 weeks ago I picked up chicken thighs as a manager's special for 0.50 per pound and froze it for the dogs.

We purchased a hot water heater we have needed for a while. Really wanted to wait until after christmas, but worried prices on appliances will go way up after January. Considering going ahead and replacing the main oven in the kitchen. Ordered two backup pairs of glasses, one bifocal, and one driving sunglasses, impact resistant. Started studying for HAM license - should be relatively easy since I am an EE, just need to learn more terminology.

Realized we had paper plates and bowls in case we had to scrimp on water for washing dishes if there was a disruption, but no cups! Bought a pack for both cold and hot beverages. Probably need more utensils, though.

u/symplton Nov 25 '24

-Added 4500 mAh of charging capacity for portables
-Installed USB chargeable lanterns in all key house zones without windows
-winterized external facing outlets and faucets
-thawed chuck roast, ground into burgers

u/reincarnateme Nov 25 '24

I bought canned beans and fruit for the pantry. I don’t have much canned food - I have frozen. I have rice, powdered potatoes. Working on canned meats and I’m trying to get dehydrated, freeze dried varieties to round it out. A bit at a time.

4

u/DeafHeretic Nov 25 '24

I bought some extra gasoline and put 10 gallons of it in my 55 gallon drum (the rest is in the remaining 5 gallon safety can) - the drum is almost full - another five gallons will probably fill it. I also filled the tank on my daily driver. I think next week I will get some diesel - I need to measure how much is in my aux tank.

Bought some e-track rails for my pickup, some large (up to 2") impact driver sockets that I didn't have, some egg replacement for baking, and some groceries.

I got my RSV, Covid and flu shots.

u/mcoiablog Nov 26 '24

Added 4 turkeys to my chest freezer. I packed up seeds that I had collected to use next year. Buying useful Christmas presnts for family such as a good chef knife, a foraging book, food baskets and blankets. I got several cases of canned string beans and corn for 50¢ a can from walmart. We had a few doctors/dental appointments. Still working on losing weight.

3

u/zachattack3500 Nov 26 '24

Bought a 1 week supply of mountain house food for each family member, 4 aquatainers to keep a week’s supply of water. Bought a new first aid kit, emergency radio, and the SAS survival manual.

u/PushyTom Nov 26 '24

I got a stomach virus and subsequently learned that I can live without coffee and alcohol. Also have some leftover prescription anti-nausea medicine to add to my stash.

Small goals for this week here. I upgraded the clothes in the entire family's emergency bags to winter clothing and renewed the food and water they had. I have an appointment at the shop to inspect the car this week. I started walking to work to help my goal of 10 km a day (I started it at the end of last week and so far I'm doing well) I added a set of underwear to my EDC and left spare shoes at work.

Bought the Jackery 1000v2. Just couldn't pass up the black friday deal. It brings our battery capacity to ~2300wh. That's enough to run our fridge for 2 to 2.5 days without recharging. In reality, though, with a few portal solar panels or the ability to "emergency charge" the jackery in 1 hour off an outlet, i should be able to keep the fridge going longer.

2

u/Busted_Axle Nov 26 '24

Did some black Friday shopping. Bought the Jackery Explorer 1000 V2 Portable Power Station, 100 pack glow sticks, 2 pack Sillcock Keys, The lost book of herbal remedies I and II.
