Hey, that's actually extremely common and including the rest of the world, more common than anything. Things always turn around, if you're a good person.

Things don’t always turn around if you’re a good person. Life doesn’t care if you’re a good person or not. If it wants to shit on you it will.

I get you're trying to be nice and comforting but I don't think this behavior should be approved of. Better to feel the pain and shame of your position and let it drive you to improve.

Seconded. Life can be tough for sure, but (granted that they're in a first world country) saving 1 grand 17 years into adulthood isn't that hard to do.

Pain and shame are not universal motivators, and if applied to everyone indiscriminately, you may just end up hurting as many people as you help. I didn't start to get my shit together until I had a kind, encouraging mentor to tell me that I wasn't a total fuckup, that the pain and shame of my youth were in the past, and that it was going to be okay if I just made an effort.

That's valid. Tough to find the middle ground as everyone is wired differently. I think the world is getting pretty soft/emotional though so I'm going to be a voice from the harsher side.

Can we trade worlds? The one I'm in is only getting crueler and colder thanks to some weird folks that think it's necessary to make this planet a harder place.

Not sure what's making your world view grim but I hope it gets better. We are truly living in the best time in history. We have access to food, water, shelter, clothes, hot showers etc... The world has progressed so well that people take these things for granted. Life is great if we practice gratitude.

I don't take any of our modern luxuries for granted, but statistics such as access to food and downward trending child mortality doesn't really address a global slide towards fascism, a government that prioritizes the needs of the elite few over the many, or a country which hasn't been more politically divided than the late 1800's. (Among many other things) - being unsure about why someone else might be assuming a grim worldview is disingenuous at best.

If you've got something great going for you, I'm happy for you, but if you really want to throw out a nigh meaningless platitude about this being the best time in history to excuse your prerogative of being a harsher human being, then I don't think we have much more to discuss.

Wasn't trying to attack you in any way but the things you mentioned that make the world a harder place is my exact point. Back in the day, when there was no social media, people would just focus on their little corner of the world. A fisherman would fish everyday to provide for his family and that would be a great life.

Nowadays people focus on large scale world issues when they can't even do anything about it. Why torment yourself with these thoughts? Just focus on yourself and the people around you.

Because although these worries are not tangible or physically present, they still have actual real-life effects which trickle down to myself and the people who I love. There is no way to tell a friend that you are "focusing on your little corner" while they confide in you that they were assaulted for being gay. There is no way to tell healthcare companies that you are unable to pay the full amount because "I am focusing on my little corner of the world".

I focus on the large scale issues because I am thinking globally while acting locally to help the disenfranchised, the broke, the non-vocal minorities, and those fundamentally unable to help themselves. Hiding from the big issues does nothing for society at large, and only serves to insulate yourself more in a comfortable bubble of complete non-responsibility.

I want that fisherman you're talking about to be able to provide for his family from local rivers and lakes which are unpolluted, because I got off my ass and hit the pavement to bring awareness for giant sewage treatment companies that wanted to make an extra buck.

We are not here to be comfortable and unconcerned. We are here to put in some fucking work, and to be as kind and as loving as possible while doing it.
