ive read somewhere that the mother bird intentionally pushes off the chick from the nest if she thinks it's too weak or ill

I’ve heard that the birds are trying to domesticate us - first we are picking up their children, next their food, then we will be inviting them inside for dinner and suddenly one day there will be a bird President. We must be vigilant.

It could also be a fledgling. They get fed on the ground until they learn to fly.

Hello OP, this is a fledgling and is supposed to be out and about with its mother watching nearby! You didn't do anything wrong by moving it mistakenly, just know it will end up on the ground again. Walking around nearby will temporarily scare the mom away so it's best to just leave them alone so she can feed the baby in peace. At this state the baby is unable to fly properly and the mother will continue following it around and feeding it until it can fly and feed itself.
That said- you finding a bird where it's supposed to be is less interesting than you finding a bird where it shouldn't be, so this is good news for you!

Don't hold the bird like that!

OP has the wings pinned to its sides which prevents flailing and injury. I don't see anything to suggest they are squeezing the bird hard- a firm hold and squeezing an animal are two very different things. Of course they didn't need to pick it up in the first place (since it's a fledgling) but no harm done! They left it outside instead of trying to 'rescue' it by keeping it in a box or something so really they did the best thing you can do after grabbing a bird that didn't need to be grabbed. It's unharmed and back where it should be.

(all jokes aside, this baby bird prolly fell out of his nest, as i heard a mother above me respond to its chirping as i picked it up. my dog was with me, but luckily he has 3 teeth, 2 braincells, and 1 nose he just tried to smell the bird with. the bird looked a bit dazzled, so i picked him up on the stick he was on and he stayed on pretty well until he glided back off. point is, i picked him up, he chirped, i hit his beak with the 🤏, and put him on a sturdy branch higher up for safe keeping.)
