Nippon steal could develop the cure to cancer, implant an un-removable explosive device in Xi Jinping and Putin's skulls, create an efficient fusion reactor, and promise to transfer ownership of this all to the US public and government and the deal would still get shot down. democrat or republican. globalism is so joever

They might as well promise all that at this point to spite the White House.

It's just too easy dumb political points to make for crooked politicians who care about nothing but staying in power.

We're the party of insert country name first ! We'll keep them from stealing yer jerbs !!!!

Why do the protectionist see so much support?

47

u/Beat_Saber_Music European Union 2d ago

because it's easy for common people to think their own country owning/making more stuff thus employing native workers is good, while foreign is bad

u/Knowthrowaway87 Trans Pride 2d ago

But how did have more support before? I feel like support for protectionism is that an all-time high. What happened?

Honestly I think it's the social media. How many people would've heard about the steel deal today vs 15 years ago? Much less have a pundit riling them up about it?

Far more people would've been unaware or apathetic to the deal

It’s mostly the unions that are strongly against it and have the parties dancing to their tune tbh, they’d have made a stink social media or not

I think the anti-globalization backlash was always there. I watched them vandalize and riot in the city I called home. They just didn't have any credibility to set the agenda because the attitude was inter-candidate competition was on the quality of their policy rather than the ability to pander to their base.

In which case we can point to polarization as the central failure point here. The fact that voters are more polarized makes it harder for political candidates to discard bad ideas.

Why do you want to see a merger so bad? Is it a fetish? A more diverse market is good, actually

The other option isn’t for US Steel to be a strong competitor that drives prices lower, it’s for US Steel to continue its long decline into insolvency, taking US-based steel production with it.

isn't us steel like, not doing well? mergers preserve a diverse market if the alternative is allowing firms to fail

Economies of scale and FDI spillovers good actually

Would they be willing to change their name to USA Number 1 Bald Eagle Patriot Steel? That might be enough.

I 'member when our history teacher would teach us about globalisation and the further promises it brought with it

She also spoke positively of the relatively recent fall of the USSR and the promises that brought for world peace though

A big part of it is the fact that the company is named US Steel. If they were buying Cliffs or something nobody would bat an eyelash.

Somehow this makes it even more idiotic than just normal protectionism.

it's a perfect representation of how cooked 21st century western democracy is in the current year

So I read an oped by Marco Rubio claiming that the merger would hurt American industry if it ever went on a war footing, with American control compromised. I gotta ask; would it be effected? Why can’t the US government work with Nippon Steel or even just nationalise the company if necessary for a war effort?

42

u/Pzkpfw-VI-Tiger NASA 2d ago

Your first issue is taking “national security” at face value like this company isn’t going to go out of buisness if it isn’t bought by a major ally.

But it's called US Steel! What Ameripoints do they have left in practical terms if yucky foreigners own it? 😔
