Nickname came from a newspaper cartoon in the 1920s that suggested we take on a black cat as a mascot for good luck after a long losing streak. We won the next game and the nickname stuck.

Sunderland AFC in English football have a nickname of the black cats because they kept barely surviving relegation in the premier league. They should be friends 😁
