I live in a rural area on one side the county is poorer and the food banks and pantry are really sucky...like I feel the people working there are taking all the good stuff and it's like a rat race of people who are not starving but want something for nothing. On the other side is the much wealthier town. They're food bank is easy, clean, fast and friendly. They give fresh food and stuff most people like. They use to just ask and not require proof but I just went and they are asking for a utility bill or car registration and anyone that lives with you license or insurance card. This bothers me.  It's like again just raping the poor. They don't need this. They have such a huge supply of food if other people like myself who live close but just over a county line can't have access to it...its a joke...we only want to help our citizens even though a town over every1 is poor as shit but we can only help our rich people that have hit on hard times. I knew one lady who got three cakes and gave them out as Xmas gifts from this foodbank...im like wtf why r u gifting food bank food it's suppose to b for u being hungry.  But she wasn't hungry she was a tight ass liar who didn't want to buy her friends gifts. Also You know how hard it is to protect your identity when you constantly are shelling out your private information to places that really have no legal obligations to protect it. These are literally volunteers...no one has done background checks on them and I'm giving them info hey live completely alone just me and my small child, here's the car I drive, here's my face for any perv, rapist, or serial killer to know where to go. And don't tell me come on it's a teenager or an older lady...I don't care. Why do we do this to poor people. Do u know the animal shelters paid by tax dollars will charge a fee to euthanize your pet where most low income go cuz they can't afford a real vet BUT IF u love your pet and want to b there when they put them down they charge more?! Wtf...so punish poor people because they can't afford to pay so they don't get to be at their loved ones side but someone with money does??? How sick is this country...I hate this place. I hope ALL rich greedy MFs die horrible horrible painful deaths or have to watch their children or whoever they love suffer dearly. The person who thought up hey if they can't pay then we don't allow them to be there when there dog takes its last breath, they're poor they need to suffer and not be allowed to get something for free. You want to live greedy and steal from people and be evil then I treat u as I would the devil and🙏 for your suffering and the worst vile things happen to u.

Organizing is challenging. Try to use your best judgment, and don't allow irrational behavior

If they're not accomplishing anything it would technically be less efficient to merge with them, lol. Honestly some organizers just want to control everything even if they're not actually good at it, and I think they just want credit. Not the reason to do any of this

That's exactly what it's come to. And now those people are nagging my partner about how having multiple chapters is bad and we should stay merged, even though the city is massive and there's plenty of work to go around that they aren't even doing.

If yall are doing most of the work, maybe just say you will be splitting off to do this and the people more interested in saying no to everything can do their own thing. Take anyone who actually wants to do the work with you

the map has 4 chapters in WI, but I'd recommend double checking if those chapters are currently active or not

Have you tried @jacksonvillefnb on Instagram (which seems pretty active) rather than @therealfoodnotbombsjax? Your messages might be going to the requests folder and whoever runs the account might not be good about checking it. You could try leaving a comment on one of their posts.

If you have a BJs membership they work out to $0.32/pair https://www.bjs.com/product/hothands-super-warmer-50-pk/3000000000004400777?gQT=1

We usually put a shout out on our socials so the community will donate too. We have boxes at some local businesses that support our cause, and lists of what we need donated

I lived in Moscow for a while. Where in town do you host the mealshare? How do you deal with the cold weather?

Disposable styrofoam coolers are used to ship cold items and medication. People are usually happy to get rid of them.

nope, we're a food bank which I know is out of the ordinary, but it's what our community wants.

Def fewer people participating due to the colder weather. We've attempted handing out snack bags+fliers to let hungry folks know where we'll be; this has been appreciated but the resource cost of putting together the bags in high. We've also discussed moving distros closer to warming centers but haven't taken any action on that yet.

We invested in one of those big hot beverage containers so we do coffee now which has been pretty appreciated - bring lots of sugar, we burn through that quick. We've also begun handing out hand warmers, tho we're still searching for a good source for these - I'm currently paying $0.50/unit out of pocket on these which adds up quick.

Outdoor propane heaters are a thing, and prolly run about $10/hour to run. Logistically dealing with propane is kinda a pain in the ass, but having a place where people can huddle together and warm up holds immense social and practical value. Some of us are a little nervous that this could attract police attention, as well, though that might just be paranoia.

Less folks show up for food, but we get more food to serve because it doesn't rot as quickly in the time between pickups and service. Not a huge dropoff in volunteers interestingly enough. Snow is trouble but not nearly as much trouble as rain.

We started serving coffee in the lineup so here's hoping more folks show up if they know the wait will be a little nicer.

I’m in Elyria and I’d love to help. I’m disabled, and that means I’m limited on what I can physically do, but I have time on my hands and I’m dedicated and organized.
