“It’s the lack of hope that kills you.”

A gif of that speech is what I was looking for, but reddit's giphy integration sucks...

I've been happy to see that people haven't been jumping into the toxic behavior of tOSU fans towards Ryan Day. Prior to this game, they wanted to FIRE the guy and he has one of the best records of any coaches. Absolute madness.
I hope with our greater expectations we don't become greater assholes.

Anyone calling for Lanning to get fired is insane.

I don't think anyone is yet but tOSU fans were with Ryan Day. The question is in two/three years when we haven't brought home the natty, will Duck fans be contented being a top 5 program?
That's basically where Ryan Day is, and it's all kinds of bonkers when you look how long it took Saban, Smart, Sweetney and other modern coaches. There's only three active coaches with a natty and Ohio State dorks were acting like spoiled children.
Assuming we continue to recruit and develop out our program, we're going to eventually get one. I just hope fans don't become toxic if when it doesn't happen immediately.

The only way I could see the fanbase turning on Dan is if we are rolled in our biggest games like what OSU just did to us. If the team just looks absolutely unprepared and like they are giving up year after year. Same could be said if he continually is overly aggressive and it costs us multiple games (seems to have already outgrown this issue). Neither seems like likely scenarios to me, but again I think those are only way people start calling for his job.

There's always hope. 2001 broke my heart. 2010? Same. 2014? Yup. 2024? Check. But you know what? The Ducks always rebounded, and they've always made it back with a good team. So they haven't broken through yet. It happens.
John Elway and the Denver Broncos lost three Super Bowls before he finally broke through and won one. Heck, the Broncos have lost 5 Super Bowls, which is tied with the New England Patriots for most Super Bowl losses ever. The Patriots? Tied for most Super Bowl losses ever? Heck, they lost two Super Bowls before getting their first win.
It takes a while to break through in sports, and honestly even the best of the best have to take their licks. Oregon will be fine. We'll get there eventually. Lanning is one heck of a head coach, and it's easy to forget this guy is only in his third season ever as the head coach at any level. We're in good hands. So this year isn't our year. Big deal, as the Broncos and Patriots showed: keep up the faith, every year isn't going to be your year.
It'll eventually come, and Lanning has program on the right track. Look at next year's schedule: much easier than this season, and Tez is saying Dante Moore looks so good he thinks he'll be at the Heisman ceremony next year. I'm not saying next year is the year, but good things are coming. Just keep the faith and enjoy the ride.

Good perspective, additionally; Dan is so young that he’s currently thirteen years younger than Saban was when he won his first of seven at Bama

I was over the game by bedtime.
TBH- the game was over by half time. Losing that way (more blowout style) vs a last second score is preferred (by me). Results in much less 2nd guessing and agonizing about " one play" or "one call" that didn't go our way.
I don't want to lose big, but, that's how it went.

That’s hard. But I have a harder time getting over losses when our team just doesn’t show up after being great for so long

💯 agree. It felt like they were "winging it" (no pun intended). Not much fight. Great ride this season, bummed at how it ended.
Unfortunately, Dillon hurt his draft chances in that game.

Thank you for writing and sharing this piece. You put into words what I could not,
I sent this to my 87 year old dad as I felt it encapsulated everything he's been to, watched on tv, listened to on the radio and felt as a life long duck fan. His dad took him to his first game at age 10 so he's lived everything you said.

As an OSU fan - The ducks are on the continued upwards trajectory and Lanning is a helluva coach. With the great recruiting class you have coming in, wouldn’t be surprised if you run through the big10 next year also

Thanks for your great letter. I’ve been following Ducks since 1965. I now recognize that the phrase, “Once a Duck, Always a Duck”, is really about ‘hope’ for next year. Every year I start the season with we will be undefeated(crazy hope). It’s clear we haven’t gotten there on a regular basis. But, I believe we’re closer than ever and clearly on the right road with Coach Lanning.

Thanks for putting the emotions to words. It's not been easy to swallow. Sent this to my son in the marines and he responded with, "that's fucking badass". So, it strung a chord with him also. Lol

As a buckeye fan, we feel that pain, we felt the same way after Clemson in 2019, great fucking season, and hopefully our next game against each other will be as good as the 32-31 game

I’m not going to downplay Phil’s contribution but Oregon is setup for success long after Phil’s death.

You have zero clue about the history of the program

Even when Phil Knight dies we’ll still receive Nike money money like the SEC schools get from all the dead tobacco and oil tycoons

239 days until the season kicks off against Montana State.
