Mods: Can we make some changes to this sub? University of Oregon

With increased exposure, we are bound to get more and more tourists in this sub. And while I overall welcome everybody to visit, other teams worst elements bring out our worst elements.

I'm wondering if we can add in some user flairs, where we could have certain posts be flaired users only. ( I personally want a Troy Dye/English Gardner combo)

Or an auto generated weekly thread, where we allow, and even encourage, all shit talking to happen.

I'm not saying that we need to hide/ bitch out... but having Ohio state, and Michigan fans arguing with each other in every one of our threads belongs on facebook, or twitter.

This is the type of thing that will probably be discussed in the off season. The mod team here is relatively small for a subreddit of this size. We will need to address this type of thing and get back to you all later.

Yeah. This is the type of thing that encourages spam accounts. Yes, it's cute. But ultimately a lot of these posts come from accounts looking to build up posting karma. These will continue to be removed.

Please don’t 😂 I’d have to be a ND fan and they are way too traditional to accept me

I'm in several subreddits that frequently have posts break through to r/all, and the "approved users" "guest list only" etc system works very well.

Basically how it works is this:

On your typical average post, everything works like normal.

On certain posts -- ones on contentious topics, ones that break out of the subreddit and get an unwanted outside audience -- the mods lock the posts to "approved users only." That means only people who are on the approved list can post.

Generally the way to get on the approved list is pretty simple. Often it means having karma in the given subreddit above a certain number, like 50 or 100 karma. That means that folks who hang around the subreddit often can get on the approved users list without any hassle by interacting normally on normal threads, and will automatically be able to comment on the few threads the mods decide to lock down.

Bascially, the set up sacrifices the ability for any person to weigh in on certain threads, which is a downside. But the upside is that those threads are free from people talking shit, going off on unrelated tangents, or generally not staying true to the intention of the community, which is an upside.

In the case of this sub in particular, I think the upsides totally outweigh the downsides. We already have r/CFB, which is a great place for fans of different teams to interact. It makes total sense to me that in a team-specific subreddit, it's good to have the ability to sometimes limit comments to people that post here all the time.

I love when respectful fans of other teams show up and say sportsmanlike things. There were cool respectful Ohio State fans in here when we beat them in October, and there have been cool respectful Ohio State fans in here in the last two days.

But the obnoxious brigading and shit-talking is super annoying and outside the scope of the subreddit, so I think it's good to take active steps to exclude it on some threads.

It's a lot to ask of a small mod team, and whatever they choose to do I support them 100%

Something very meta about Buckeyes coming to this subreddit so they can downvote posts like this one.

We should do nothing that involves mandatory flair.

15 pieces is the minimum.

I'm just spitballing options that don't have us perma-banning everyone.

If we locked it up, I’d miss the occasional bird watcher posting a photo of a Madagascar Teal Duck or a Red- Breasted Merganser Duck.

Different duck breeds for flairs! I’m personally a Muscovy because of my face

Mods just need to boot people trolling but we don’t need to be like r/conservative

It's easy for you to say when you don't have to deal with a community of 28,000 people clashing with invading trolls. Especially during a situation where everybody is incredibly touchy.

Edit: We aren't talking about politics here. This isn't a community talking about stuff that is related to the essential governance of our country. This is a sports team community that is trying to have a healthy, positive atmosphere for the 28k fans that come here.

AutoMod

u/princessprity 6d ago

Automod is far from perfect. If you set it too strong, it weeds out too much. And then you have so many people asking where their posts and comments are going.

Just block anybody that down votes me, clear sign if trolling.

I don't want us booting every shit talker...

Two different ways... both end us up being like r/conservative

u/downey_jayr 6d ago

Isn’t that what the CFB sub is for though?

Also there is a difference between banter/shit talk and trolling.

0

u/CarteBlanchDevereau 6d ago

Is there? Sometimes intent is hard to see in type.

3

u/downey_jayr 6d ago

There is, you even admit it in your second sentence.

I think it’s pretty easy to see who is trolling versus who is engaging in playful banter and those that are just repeatedly sayings stupid shit.

And thats exactly what mods are supposed to do, fucking moderate the discussion.

u/CarteBlanchDevereau 6d ago

I'm saying, one person's banter can be another's trolling. Mods shouldn't have to judge intent. Banning should be last resort.

Literally the job of a mod

I mean, are the opposing fanbases really worse than the heavy population of delusionals insisting the Ducks were the best team, but the unfair bye resulted in a 34 point first half deficit?
