OK but like this archetype could be applied to a lot of other characters

My mind jumps to the Batman villain, the Ventriloquist, first personally

u/TheNamesMacGyver 1d ago

I was thinking of Mankind and Mr Socko lmao

Not quite dead, not quite alive!

Order of the Stick did it first.

u/Awkward_GM 1d ago

What about the Ventriloquist in Batman?

6

u/BarackTrudeau 1d ago

Can't forget Bubbles and Conky

7

u/KamuiT 1d ago

The Ventriloquist did it first in Batman: The Animated Series

Ok, but consider the following: someone makes a Banjo-esque hand puppet god, and someone else ends up becoming an actual Cleric of that 'god', complete with spells and everything, prompting some 'hmm, hey wait a second' moments

Wait I just realized this is basically Jester and "The Traveler" nevermind

Make it Warlock with puppet as Patron

5

u/Horriblefish 1d ago

Was thinking the same thing! Would be cool on curse of Strahd campaign

7

u/Babki123 1d ago

Mr Garrison and his two puppet (forgot the english name)

2

u/tourniquet13 1d ago

Mr hat and Mr stick.

5

u/Thaurlach 1d ago

Mr Flibble is very cross.

You’ve even got eldritch blast for the hex-vision.

How many sessions until the rest of the party is tried of the joke?

6

u/Awkward_GM 1d ago

The party have fallen in love with the puppet but wish to kick my character out in favor of the puppet.

It shows a Bethesda copyright but I sure thought that was Penny Arcade initially.

6

u/Awkward_GM 21h ago

Bethesda commissioned them to make it as a promotion for Fallout 3.

Like most puppet routines it probably would be cringe as hell or get some good laughs. But most likely cringe to watch an amateur trying to crack jokes and act crazy while talking to their hand.

I mean it can work but...

There is a high probability that somebody will put a pillow over your character's face until he stops moving.

6

u/Awkward_GM 21h ago

And then they are surprised when the puppet continues on by dragging my character’s corpse.

everybody though he was insane. little did they know it was actually a sentient cursed puppet who happens to be a thousand year old murder hobo causing him to appear insane

When your character concept blurs the line between role-playing and psychological horror:

GM: 'This is fine. Totally fine.'

Hand Puppet: 'We have plans, Steve. Dark plans.'

The real question is: who gets the XP, you or the puppet?

There is literally a music video about this Vault.

My girlfriend wants to start getting into dnd but doesn't have the ability to commit to my groups schedule atm so we'll be playing a talion inspired character where I'll be a kalashtar echo knight fighter where she'll play as the spirit that's bound to me and control the echo whenever I manifest the echo

The picture isn't picturing

2

u/GIRose 1d ago

It's Bro Strider from hit web comic Homestuck, who went insane because he was raised by an evil hand puppet

1

u/Undead_archer Forever DM 1d ago

Thanks

You should do a warlock whose patron talks to em through a hand puppet, especially considering that this story ends with the puppet being some unstoppable murder monster, not the person the puppet.

u/Umicil 1d ago

This is actually a pretty common gimmick. Even Pinocchio is arguably a version of this.

u/ItsPandy 17h ago

I feel like this meme format ran it's course. It's justl vaguely describing a pre exiting character at this point.

1

u/Awkward_GM 15h ago

Probably so

1

u/Phoenix-Delta-141 Forever DM 10h ago

I could make this into an NPC though

-12

u/StripedTabaxi Old School Grognard 1d ago

Why is that comic considered canon? :(

10

u/Awkward_GM 1d ago

Penny Arcade was comissioned by Bethesda to make it. Additionally, it is referenced in Fallout 3 where the vault suit for that vault number is present.

It is not as insane as the Fallout Vault that cloned a guy named Gary, where all disputes are decided by gambling, and one where an incompent hippie was going to oversee a group of rich people.

4

u/grumpykruppy 1d ago

There's also that one where everyone became a plant monster.

5

u/Madhighlander1 1d ago

Or the one where the entire population of the vault was thirty people and a starving panther. Not even sure what was being tested there.

3

u/ChessGM123 Rules Lawyer 1d ago

That vault was testing how many people it takes to beat a starving panther.

Because it is? What's wrong with it

1

u/TwistederRope 1d ago

A grognard calling old things shit...that's new.

I’m gonna play a wizard who only speaks through his familiar, asks his familiar for advice and decisions, etc, like the ventriloquist and scarface from batman
