I don't have one of those compartments, so mine goes right next to the butter.

I actually keep butter in mine, but there's a shelf next to it that houses all the medication!

That's.... That's my mounjaro compartment. Someone has soiled the sacred grounds.

I'm firmly on team cheese drawer for insulin storage. Things love to fall out of the these compartments.

u/sugabeetus Oct 30 '24
Yeah I did use cheese drawer, then took over a whole crisper drawer where I can also put drinks I don't want anyone else to steal (because they know not to go in Mom's insulin drawer).

I know this is a joke, but just in case anyone else finds this interesting/useful...there was a 2018 study that suggested that storing insulin at room temperature might actually be better than storing it in domestic refrigerators. Basically, fridges sometimes get too cold, and that's bad for potency.
The butter drawer is the warmest part of the fridge, and that's why you're supposed to keep it there.

Isn't the door, part of the fridge that gets most temperature fluctuations? Wouldn't it be a worst place to keep insulin?

No because insulin is stable at room temperature. It however cannot be frozen. So you’d rather have it in the door which gets less cold than store it in the back of the fridge and risk it freezing.

On the flip side, most people rarely keep their fridges open for that long, and you can quickly see how much insulin you have/when they expire

I used to call that the “butter penthouse”, but now we just call it the “the PENthouse”

Yeah and you either fuck cows or you don't!

u/pitshands Oct 30 '24
I don't but occasionally when things get "stuck" you have to go in. Great Grandma grabbed a handful butter and worked her way in.

This made me giggle. That will now be called the Insulin Compartment.

I feel VERY seen.
Keep mine in a little aluminum Pokémon tin in that same compartment. The tin holds my current insulin and some alcohol prep wipes very well. And keeps it safe from rolling out.

We have too much insulin to keep it in the butter tray area but it is in the shelf right below it.

I have 3d printed holders for my insulin vials that stick to the wall of my fridge. Takes up virtually no space and I can fill my butter compartment to the brim as in the OP.

u/hoggergenome Type 1 Oct 30 '24
They butter move cuz keeping that in THAT compartment is insultin to us.
1
u/Foreign_Plate_4372 Oct 30 '24
Yeah but butter though and in tiny individual packs
You know there are kids out there that have never experienced the joy of good butter

Sadly my fridge's insulin compartment is so tiny it knocks the boxes out when I open it 😔 Miss the good ol days of being able to store upwards of 8 boxes in that bad boy.

I have never seen that much butter at a home that didn't feature a cow.

It's so cool to know I'm not the only one who does this!
(using the insulin compartment for insulin, I mean)
