Moderating takes time. You can help us out by reporting any comments or submissions that don't follow these rules:

  1. No non-marxists - This subreddit isn't here to convert naysayers to marxism. Try r/DebateCommunism for that. If you are a member of the police, armed forces, or any other part of the repressive state apparatus of capitalist nations, you will be banned.

  2. No oppressive language - Speech that is patriarchal, white supremacist, cissupremacist, homophobic, ableist, or otherwise oppressive is banned. TERF is not a slur.

  3. No low quality or off-topic posts - Posts that are low-effort or otherwise irrelevant will be removed. This includes linking to posts on other subreddits. This is not a place to engage in meta-drama or discuss random reactionaries on reddit or anywhere else. This includes memes and circlejerking. This includes most images, such as random books or memorabilia you found. We ask that amerikan posters refrain from posting about US bourgeois politics. The rest of the world really doesn’t care that much.

  4. No basic questions about Marxism - Posts asking entry-level questions will be removed. Questions like “What is Maoism?” or “Why do Stalinists believe what they do?” will be removed, as they are not the focus on this forum. We ask that posters please submit these questions to /r/communism101.

  5. No sectarianism - Marxists of all tendencies are welcome here. Refrain from sectarianism, defined here as unprincipled criticism. Posts trash-talking a certain tendency or marxist figure will be removed. Circlejerking, throwing insults around, and other pettiness is unacceptable. If criticisms must be made, make them in a principled manner, applying Marxist analysis. The goal of this subreddit is the accretion of theory and knowledge and the promotion of quality discussion and criticism.

  6. No trolling - Report trolls and do not engage with them. We've mistakenly banned users due to this. If you wish to argue with fascists, you can may readily find them in every other subreddit on this website.

  7. No chauvinism or settler apologism - Non-negotiable: https://readsettlers.org/

  8. No tone-policing - https://old.reddit.com/r/communism101/comments/12sblev/an_amendment_to_the_rules_of_rcommunism101/

What can Syrian communists do to respond to this? I've read the recent statements but I do not know what the future would look like for communist movement in Syria.

The anti Assad communists were thoroughly purged out by Hafez Al Assad in the 70s and only really exist in exile now. The rest of the Syrian communist movement was forced to ally with the Baathist government out of survival especially after 2006 and during the war.

The future seems uncertain for the Syrian communist movement now but what’s clear is that there’s no future for them in any way under the present government and their presence is largely irrelevant today.

They died when Jadid was overthrown, sad yes i mean Jadid overthrowing Aflaq was bad but to our surprise, Jadid actually did something during the Black September and were actually trying to Liberate Palestine by all methods.

Kinda same that less people rarely knows him, more people thinks Assad "Neo-Ba'athism" were far-left but in reality, the most left of the Ba'ath Party died during the Corrective Coup, shame..

>communists in Arab countries always seem to fall short of doing the right thing and end up becoming disappointments these days

Im sorry but this reads extremely weird. Where in the world exactly are communists doing the "right thing"? It definitely isn't where I live and I would say it isn't in the West in general. Besides India or the Philippines, where would you say that communists are doing the right thing? If feels weird pointing out the communists in arab countries specifically.

E: I only saw now that you are or seem to be arabic, which makes me understand your comment more. Still, and trust me I get that impulse too, I wouldn't bash the communists in any specific region too much. There are shortcomings, revisionists and opportunists everywere. It is because mistakes and betrayals are common that revolutions are rare. (Not saying that the communists in arab countries are betraying or making mistakes, im not well informed on the situation).

Arab here, I understand their take tbh and it’s hard not be cynical about it. You can only lionise past movements for so long until you remember it’s 2024 now and any semblance of communism being largely accepted in Arab societies is completely gone.

In much of the Arab world communism is seen at best as an irrelevant grandpa’s movement, it fell out of favour with a big chunk of the population post 1991 and there’s no chance of it recovering since.

Well, for one thing, if communism isn't appealing to the masses, it can only be the fault of the communists that the masses have encountered. Then, I would say that the popularity of communism can change and increase very quickly in short periods of time. The growth of popularity of communism doesn't necessarily have to be a constant one.

Not a fan of Tim Anderson but this article was good for sources on recent events in Syria (since the Wahhabi fascist takeover) as well as for a bit of the history of the civil war and atrocity propaganda.
