Workmate got laid off within the day. Self-Story

Super depressing ng nangyari this week. This is my first remote work na direct sa client (US). Reason ko kaya ganito set-up ay dahil sobrang fed-up na ko sa traffic ng NCR kaya tyinaga ko talagang makahanap ng WFH na direct kahit napakaming interviews and work assessments. Hired last October 2024 and until now okay naman.

I noticed na wala yung isa namin ka-work.

Like talaga? Agad-agad tanggalan ganon.

Mejo nakakaiyak kasi. // Sa tru lang.

normal. sanayan lang talaga. That's the cons of remote freelance work vs corporate. You can lose your work anytime. Kaya nga it is ideal to have more than 1 client/company.

*Updated for other readers to clarify yung meaning ng remote control 🤭

Remote workers can work in corporate. Like me. Haha

Yep. Better to say freelancers and independent contractors. (Magkaiba rin yun hehe).

Remote workers = not working in an office. Which includes employees who work in corporate. And better if may entity sa Pilipinas para covered ng labor laws natin. Hehe

Best of both worlds! 👏

Yes. True. Same here. I used the term remote pero based sa context ng post ni OP.

I think you can also lose your work even if you're in corporate as easily as being a freelancer. During the huge tech layoffs last year, our company laid off around 15 full-time employees. They were gone on the day they were told. I work with them as a freelancer but got to keep my job compared to the full-time employees.

I think it really boils down to how much impact you're bringing into the business over anything else.

Ganyan talaga OP. Jan mo rin ma re-realize that you need a buffer, save up for rainy days. And have more than 1 client if you can.

Common thinking ay corporate is stable. No. Corporate o hindi, everybody can lose their job anytime.

Be prepared - savings, EF, insurance, etc. Maglaan palagi and set your priorities straight when it comes to finances. As long as you place the necessary measures, ready ka for any situation.

Stability is in the person, not on any job, lalo na kung regular lang tayong empleyado.

Sobrang true to. Ganyan daw culture sa US talagang tinatanggal agad agad.

True! Most bosses, if not all, will think of you as a disposable tool. I had a workmate before na tinext lang ng boss namin na huwag na pumasok sa office kasi she’s not needed na. She was on vacation pa that time. Gano’n lang.

Yup, very normal. Kaya importante palagi to build EF, portfolio and connections.

Normal to, first time ko sa remote with a startup company. Bigla na lang nawawalan ng access mga devs, wala yung usual transition / handover na we're used to. Kaya very important to save as much as you can and always upskill

Experienced this last month. Worked for 8 months for an AU client, friend ko pa yung manager. Eh hindi nakabenta (partly due to the current market) so saktong Dec 3 goodbye na. Best talaga is to have a fallback job OP. And save save save

there is a valid reason bakit na lay off sya, who would want to pay someone who can’t keep up with deadlines? unproductivity yan. hindi lang naman yan nangyayari sa remote setup, even corporate. basically wasting resources din ang taong yan. but anyway, save up for rainy days kasi wala din naman certainty.

(Flexitime and part time).

As in tipong today nakapasok pa sya, then before end of day, sinabihan sya na ieend na contract nya. Pero sa case naman nun, it was bound to happen kase andami nyang mali during nun stint nya sa work namin.

Weigh mo pros and cons ng corporate at ng remote/freelance. Kung ano mas matimbang sayo, dun ka.

Its a normal practice especially sa US, for sure kinausap na yan na hindi siya ngpeperform as expected before mukhang di ngbago kaya na layoff or baka hindi na need

Look for another siguro OP.

Laid off din ako this week.

u/mgul83 7h ago

Normal ba to in case under agency ka?

1

u/Sleepy_Head1998 6h ago

Yes normal, been there. No notice talaga sila, bigla bigla kang tatanggalin. Learned this the hard way, kaya importante talaga na may back up ka - have multiple clients!

1

u/upsidedown512 5h ago

Yes wala kang habol, anytime talagang possible tanggalan since madali sila makakuha ng mas mura, mas knowledgeable dahil by the contract lang naman kayo na anytime pwedeng iterminate.. Swerte pa din yung sa corpo jobs or workbased sa ph kasi may DOLE na proprotect. Kaya totoo na high sahod means high risk and high demand ng work.

1

u/JbalTero 5h ago

Ganyan talaga sa US, compared sa PH, may pa goodbye2 pa

1

u/AntOk5256 5h ago

Normal. Madalas samin magmmessage palang ako sa Slack tapos deactivated na pala yung user 😆 mapa-anong lahi sa US company, regular man o contractor ganyan nangyayari.

I'm working sa isang US client as a web developer and Google admin, sa sobrang dalas nila mag-layoff kahit HR position ako na ginawa nilang taga-handle ng offboarding. As in midnight pa lang nila wala na agad access yung employee even before the notice, minsan may magcha-chat sakin asking why they lost their access. Nakaka-guilty din kasi I've worked with most of them

Welcome to the world of freelancing. Kaya dapat put your best foot forward sa work tapos save, save and save! I cannot stress that enough para may emergency funds ka once nawalan ng client. Live below your means and you are good to go.

This is the price to pay sa ating set up.
