Why are people downplaying the Gamestation Go ?
It's gonna play 2600,5200, 7800, Arcade, M Network and freaking Recharged games !
Sure the Gamestation Go is probably not going to have Lynx and Jaguar games ( who knows maybe it will and they're just keeping it a surprise for now ) but what they have confirmed to be running on this machine is already worth the 150 bucks they are charging for it.

It’s value is debatable at this point. Add Lynx and Jaguar and it’s unquestionable.

This video actually makes me very wary. I hope I’m wrong, but in another CES video Jon references sd cards for game saves only. Then, in this video he mentions licensing as an issue for some games and platforms. Put those together and it feels like this system will be locked down.
Lastly, the stuff on here that could make real use of the keypad (Intellivision games) aren’t on the system, just the M series they released on the 2600. Aside from the abject stupidity of that decision, it also paints this as a money grab from MyArcade rather than a competitive handheld. The latest Retroid system is $200 and it runs any Android emulator - this could easily compete with that if MyArcade didn’t try to manipulate licensing into new devices for every IP (which is what this CES seems to indicate).

Not locked down. Watch this- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5TRdc72Kzs&t=15s&pp=ygUGYXRhcmkg

Thanks for the link!!!! Absolutely not sounding locked down - happy to be wrong!! Also, for $150 with all the proper control options means this will be very competitive!

You know it won't have Activision games.

u/Aeronnaex 1d ago
My Arcade’s “wink wink” response with respect to “firmware updates” makes me think they will be as easy to add as they are to the GameStation Pro.

u/Spelunka13 1d ago
Let's hope it's nothing like the gamestation pro. That was terrible. Lag was ridiculous with wireless. Spinner in a bad spot .
2
u/Aeronnaex 1d ago
Yeah, lag was the worst - my biggest worry with any MyArcade product. I hope their controllers don’t have as much.

u/Spelunka13 21h ago
Because of them I was so nervous about the lag on the VCS. Well there was none. Yes I know different manufacturers.

Because I'm not paying $150+ to play 40 year old games that I've had on my PC for 15 years already.

You can get a cheaper Ambernic handheld for half the price that plays all those and more.
Mine's 3 years old and currently runs 2600, 7800, Mame, SNES, Megadrive/Genesis, Atari ST, Amiga, ZX Spectrum, C64, PS1, Lynx, Gamegear, Neo Geo.
Basically any system lower than a PS2.
From what little info I can find on tech specs it seems it will be pretty underpowered compared to similar systems.

"You can get a cheaper Ambernic handheld for half the price that plays all those and more." You're absolutely right friend, just don't say that on Atari Age or else the ban hammer will be dropped on you 😉 .
One of the last heated arguments I had on that site was precisely because I argued that the 7800+ wasn't worth the money Atari was charging for it ( 120 bucks ) especially when you consider that you can get a much more powerful Trimui Smart Pro for half the price ( 60 bucks ) that comes with an SD card filled with over 6 thousand games from dozens of classic systems ( yes I have one and yes it's a fantastic little handheld ).

I totally agree with you. Same happened to me when I stated a fact that the 400 mini wasn't worth 130 bucks for all the tinkering that has to be done and still sucks. The 2600 ,7800 pluses and the 400 mini are worth 50 bucks. The VCS went down to 80 bucks on black Friday everyone jumped on it. My biggest thing is they include a spinner and a trackball. Let's see how compatible it is with all the games and how playable the games are. Good post and keep on.

u/curtludwig 4d ago
I complained about the 400 mini on here and was shouted down. I don't see any point in the thing, a raspberry pi in a 3d printed case would do all it can do and more...

u/Spelunka13 4d ago
No worries this is not a 400 mini fan boy thread. We're comparing here. All positive and negative opinions are welcome. And btw you are correct. I would love the 400 mini but the controller is terrible and compatibility with all the Atari consoles and games are very spotty. It just works on Batocera if wanted.

I love my Anbernic devices but this appears to have a lot of different elements (trackball, numpad, spinner, etc.). Still, on the fence about the Gamestation Go as MyArcade's record is spotty.

Look, I wouldn't have joined the Atari sub if I didn't love me some Atari. So I'm not saying this to be a hater: Atari has been rehashing the same ol' content on too many platforms recently. The 50th Anniversary has some good, unique content (finally, I can play I, Robot legally!)... but a lot of it was already on the Flashback Classics compilation. Where is Rampart? Xybots? Vindicators? Escape from the Planet of the Robot Monsters? Homebrew stuff?
It's hard to get excited over the same ol' 2600 games over and over and over again.

This right here. I get the Atari’s focus is retro gaming, but there’s nothing compelling about this product to me.
6
u/curtludwig 4d ago
Yup, how many flashback consoles that are all basically the same can the market support? Atari has milked and milked and at some point that cow hasn't got any more milk to give.

u/Knicks5033 4d ago
Some of the games you're mentioning became owned by Midway, now property of WB Interactive. I'd love to see new ports, too, though.

u/Spelunka13 1d ago
I love the Atari 50 but I don't like that they charge for updates. Don't care if it's inexpensive it's the point. The DLCs are not very good either.
5
u/Spelunka13 5d ago
Because myarcade has a terrible track record. Anything Atari is always taken with not a grain but a bottle of salt due to all the Vaporware. Let it come out then we will see. But for now nothing wrong with being cautiously skeptical.

u/Kelvington 5d ago
I need to hold one before I make up my mind totally. It looks crazy with the keypad and trackball, but I'm going to keep an open mind until I see one IRL. Plus I bet it will be hacked within 12 hours of release to play all the Lynx and Jaguar games.
3
u/TechnOuijA 5d ago
PLUS it has all of the appropriate controls. I think that's the main thing I love about it
1
u/Spelunka13 1d ago
I hope you'll be able to turn it upside down because the spinner should be on the right side. Same with the trackball. Keypad on the left
3
u/Aeronnaex 4d ago
I understand skepticism of MyArcade, BUT having appropriate controls is a big deal! I also like how the controls needed for each game illuminate. My one caveat is that this better be properly expandable - the GameStation pro worked well enough, but tons of games didn’t work. Also been thinking about getting an Abernic for a while as well, so I might change my mind.

u/DrMo77 4d ago
I don’t really care about atari games (apart from the odd one here or there) but the paddle and trackball and the fact it will be hackable has me interested. There’s plenty of arcade games that will be brillant on this. It’s niche so I understand a lot of people don’t get it but for the price it’s actually a decent proposition. The nearest thing I can think of is the taito egret with spinner controller and that is pricey. I still play my DS with spinner peripheral a lot so I’m watching this closely

u/Early-Yesterday3666 4d ago
I'm gonna go for the 7800plus. Just as a display item, and to support Atari. If I occasionally want to play the games, I'm gonna play it om my Ambernic. But Atari has to stay focused, I like their console reissues. Only thing they need is a killer handheld and they are all set. Oh and they need to discontinue the Super Pocket Atari, it is only confusing things

u/furstt 4d ago
Does it have Kaboom and if so, does it play well with the spinner controller 👀
3
u/Spelunka13 4d ago
I guarantee it won't have Kaboom. They dont have the rights. I want to be able to add roms . Then the controls be compatible with said roms.
3
u/BeerandGuns 4d ago
First I’ve heard of this. If it was a platform you needed to buy games for I’d 100% skip it but for $150 and loaded with games I’ll probably pick one up.
1
u/raizenkempo 4d ago
I'm so excited with that device, I hope it can play more than Atari games. Like games from 16bit to 128bit generations atleast
2
u/Owlwarrior777 4d ago
The only thing I can really gather is that there is a trackball spinner and number pad on it which is something to the best of my knowledge has not been done before in any past Atari handhelds. That and I think Atari have given us some great things over the past couple of years like the 2600+ and the Atari 50 collection. I'm not sure how I feel about this handheld to be honest.
1
u/Saneless 4d ago
Because for the last couple decades, Atari has been some dipshit executive with more ignorance than intelligence. They chase some nonsense and buzzwords and think about profits and bullet points instead of building something a gamer actually wants and then moving backwards
They've failed on almost every single idea and no one is going to get excited before they deliver something good
This may be great but I'll wait and see after, not before, it's released
1
u/jonpertwee2 3d ago
I already have A LOT of different options to play Atari stuff, so a basic emulation system doesn't hold much interest for me. What makes this device much more interesting is the mini track-ball and paddle controllers. If those things work well then this is a pretty definite buy for me.
6
u/xdarkwombatx 4d ago
Because they are just releasing ROM dumpers and emulators running on 8 year old phone CPUs and charging people 100 plus for it.
Enjoy the input lag, then compare that with actual hardware versions like the real thing or FPGA solutions.
