This does not remotely surprise me. We've now had a decade and so far, VR is a niche product (it's why Sony just suspended production on the PSVR 2 due to demand not being there). Apple can make a really nice VR headset, but it hasn't magically made VR anything other than a niche product.

Apple could make the AVP a really nice VR headset, but with over 20k hours of time spent in VR since the OG vive came out the AVP is the most amazing AR headset on the market and the worst VR headset on the market. It’s really frustrating :(
