Ringtail. Related to racoons.

139

u/Specialist_Victory_5 Oct 07 '23

Is this the same as a minerā€™s cat?

115

u/Melodic_Priority_272 Oct 07 '23

Yes. I didn't know such an animal existed. Saw one on my driveway and freaked.

50

u/OpusJess Oct 07 '23

This exact thing happened to me in New Braunfels haha Iā€™d never heard of them and though a lemur escaped or something

2

u/NovaAteBatman Oct 07 '23

These aren't ringtail lemurs, they're another animal called a ringtail that's related to racoons.

36

u/Burnallthepages Oct 07 '23

Yeah, but you can see that if you didn't know ringtails existed and you just had a minute to look at the animal, lemur would probably be a first guess for many people.

21

u/Banditsmisfits Oct 07 '23

Same thing happened to me! I ran inside to wake my husband up because it was 4am and I wanted to catch a lemur.

-19

u/NovaAteBatman Oct 07 '23

These are ringtails, not ringtail lemurs.

15

u/Banditsmisfits Oct 07 '23

Oh I know that now, but I didnā€™t at the time. We were new to Texas and I hadnā€™t ever heard of them before. So when I was after a late shift at work I was sure it was a lemur, and that it must of escaped and the poor thing needed help, and at the very least we should go check on it. Thankfully my husband did a quick google search and figured it out. Lol

9

u/enchanted_fishlegs Oct 07 '23

Good thing you didn't catch it. I knew a guy who saw one in his neighbor's barn when he was a kid. He didn't know what it was but it was adorable, so he tried to catch it to keep as a pet. It sprayed. He said the stench was pretty intense.

-1

u/meatdreidel69 Oct 07 '23

Itā€™s actually a type of lemur. Iā€™m a zoology student

11

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '23

A very friendly ringtail at that

4

u/StatisticCyberosis Oct 07 '23

Itā€™s cool that heā€™s playing a synth.

172

u/AsleepTemperature111 Oct 06 '23

Awesome ringtail sighting! Theyā€™re pretty shy.

47

u/DaM00s13 Oct 07 '23

They arenā€™t at all shy. They are famously called miners cats because they would interact with miners around the camp fire and basically become pets.

59

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '23

If there are any ringtails reading this, come into my house I will feed you and take care of you they're so cute

18

u/DaM00s13 Oct 07 '23

Just camp near cliffs in the same spot for like a week and they will hop in your lap

5

u/dadsrad40 Oct 07 '23

I had one that used to hang out in the deer stand with me while I was hunting. Iā€™d bring it snacks, like peanuts and granola and it would just chill on the floor next to me lol. Pooped everywhere tho, so that was a little off putting

7

u/DaM00s13 Oct 07 '23

I had a group of them visit the wall next to our camp at havasupi. There were eating giant Dobson flies. Super fucking cool

2

u/meatdreidel69 Oct 07 '23

Theyā€™re shy

105

u/Lysergio Oct 07 '23

What's with that awful noise/music?

69

u/lIllIllIllIllIllIII Oct 07 '23

Went back and unmuted and that is not what I expected. What the hell lol

81

u/Garnet0908 Oct 07 '23

I unmuted it because of you guys and I canā€™t stop laughing. What in the Salad Fingers background music hell is this? šŸ˜‚

26

u/SimonDanziger Oct 07 '23

Salad fingers, now that's a name I have not heard in a long time.

17

u/Garnet0908 Oct 07 '23

I hadnā€™t thought about it in a long time until I heard this creepy music. And that was definitely on purpose.

10

u/RaneeGA Oct 07 '23

Dammit.... now You made Me unmute it. dude šŸ˜†

7

u/No_Year_5874 Oct 07 '23

šŸ¤£šŸ˜†šŸ¤£ Your so right! I was literally playing the Salad Fingers video for coworkers 5 days ago! They needed to know about the rusty spoons!

8

u/Zestyclose_Foot_134 Oct 07 '23

Yeah I thought it was going to be some annoying TikTok song not Cinema of the Unsettling from the Office šŸ˜‚

7

u/RenaissanceStruggle8 Oct 07 '23

This music is fucking stupid.

4

u/Easy_Arm_1987 Oct 07 '23

The music is driving the Ringtail crazy, and looking for the exit to get the hell out of there ... LOL

3

u/Ok_Afternoon_8779 Oct 07 '23

Itā€™s the worst

1

u/cornishacid6 Oct 08 '23

i was hoping for track ID

71

u/VIRUSIXI2 Oct 06 '23

Ringtail! Iā€™m guessing Arizona?

31

u/Valkyriemome Oct 07 '23

That is so freaking adorable. Iā€™ve never heard of this animal.

12

u/Pure_Kangaroo6215 Oct 07 '23

Have you watched with the audio unmuted?

6

u/Valkyriemome Oct 07 '23

I have now. Disturbing.

27

u/Low-Squirrel2439 Oct 06 '23

Cacomistle aka ringtail

22

u/Curious_ByStander9 Oct 07 '23

So many animals in the world that I have no fucking clue about lmao

20

u/ForeverCareful3021 Oct 07 '23

Very shy little ringtail, aka ā€œMinerā€™s Catā€. Theyā€™re good at ridding the neighborhood of rodents and insects, and the old time miners loved ā€˜em for those very reasons! In my 62 years of outdoorā€™s Arizona adventures, Iā€™ve only seen one in the wild. Great shots of a very camera shy little guy!

18

u/jollyrobyn Oct 07 '23

Lived in zion for a while as a worker, one of my neighbors in the dorm had one get into his room one night and steal a whole loaf of bread and a package of graham crackers lol

25

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '23

[deleted]

4

u/FinancedWaif7 Oct 07 '23

They are not shy. Little fuckers are adorable and mischievous. I came down from a climb in Vegas once to find that my friends had let a ringtail carry one of my shoes 50ft while they watched laughed and took pictures of it.

0

u/DaM00s13 Oct 07 '23

No they arenā€™t. They are called miners cats because of how readily they would become pets and live in minerā€™s campsites eating mice.

18

u/MegaPiglatin Oct 07 '23

šŸ˜±šŸ˜±šŸ˜±

A ringtail!! I saw one once as a kid in the middle of the night in the desert faaar away from peopleā€”as others have already said, they are typically quite people-shy so this is a rare find indeed.

7

u/HortonFLK šŸ¦ŠšŸ¦ WILDLIFE EXPERT šŸ¦šŸ¦Š Oct 07 '23

Iā€™ve only seen one of these in my life. Sadly dead on the side of the road.

7

u/Hillcountryaplomb Oct 07 '23

2

u/enchanted_fishlegs Oct 08 '23

I was thinking one of those shows that used to come on Saturday afternoons. The ones where they would show cheesy 50's science fiction movies.

4

u/luckydogtoo Oct 07 '23

I've lived in AZ for 60 yrs and I've only seen 2.

5

u/jescowhitejr Oct 07 '23
