Need your opinions.
So my mechanic is building me a 22r. It will be a zero mile motor. Built and installed for $1800. He will be reusing the fuel pump, power steering pump and everything else on my current motor. Which is all brand new. My question is, is $1800 a good deal? A fair deal?

Id be concerned about what parts are being replaced and what manufacturers. Crank and rod bearings being of high concern, no cheap China parts. OSK timing chain. Hastings piston rings. Quality valves, seats, springs.
Price is to good for OEM quality parts.

This is what you need to be asking your mechanic.
Also, is your mechanic a Toyota specialist with experience building engines? A proper engine rebuild using the proper parts as /u/Sohte3 said normally costs at least double that, and that is a deal for the quality you’re getting with LCE.

He is a Toyota mechanic. He has built quite a few over the years. He actually has everything in his shop to build the motor without having to buy anything. Someone just offered him $35,000 cash for his truck and he politely told them hahahahaha fuck no.

I should also add that he charges everyone $75 an hour and doesn’t put a mark up on parts. He might be the only honest mechanic I may ever know. Also thank you for your response.

Curiously low for a proper zero mile rebuild, including installation. I'd be asking a lot of questions, too.
New pistons and rings? Oversized bores? Valve job with new guides? What timing chain kit? Single or dual row? What guides? Metal backed? Reconditioned rods with new pin bushings? Anything with the crank? Polish or regrind? What company will the gaskets and seals be from?
Of course, this depends on your area too, but still seems low to me.

Shoot in my area finding a rebuilt 22r is a $1200-1400 proposition. That’s before asking someone to snatch out the old one and stuff in the new one.

I just lost my 22RE motor to burnt cylinders on a 1992. A wreck yard engine with 175K miles is ~ $2500 plus tax. A new build would be over double not including install. So all the same questions as above posters, I’d be asking a lot of questions about the build.

For the love of god, get the metal timing chain guide, a new oil pump and cam shaft. I went with an old engn bldr one. But check out 22re race works. They’re a solid active company.

Yea, parts and installation that’s a great price assuming he knows what he’s doing and the parts are of acceptable quality.

That’s a good price if you already had the parts an brought them to him. Now if that’s the price he’s quoting for the parts, labor, and any hardware that may come up missing. That’s sketchy. But if it’s removing the engine. Rebuilding with parts you have. And reinstalling. Not bad. Redline performance in McMinnville Oregon quoted me about $1,400-$1,500 being I had the parts already sorted. So they’d be charging me for removal. Machine shop labor. And then rebuild. And installation. $1,800 isn’t bad in that case.
