My next project Gear Pics
Y'all may know I love diversion cases and hidden secret squirrel spy stuff. So this is the new case I'm adapting for my Ps90 SBR. Double points if anyone actually knows the reference. Lastly, any tips or advice on re-lining instrument cases is much appreciated (since most of my musical experience is limited to running a sound board for a local band).

It's been a long time since I've seen those movies, but I think I remember them being pretty good.

u/cozmo1138 1d ago
They’re corny, but yeah, as a teenager into guns and guitars (and thanks to the movie, Salma Hayek), I loved it. The soundtrack was pretty good, too. I remember “Jack the Ripper” by Link Wray was on it. Great gunfight music. I’d gladly watch it again.

You can cut foam with hot wire. The foam itself isn't hard to get. Shaping it is an art but not a hard one to get started in.
If you haven't watched El Mariachi/Desperado/Once Upon a Time in Mexico, go do that.
33
u/dark2023 1d ago
I've seen 'em all at least once. I'm guessing I'll use hard closed-cell foam and line with a cheap velvet like fabric.
21
u/diefreetimedie 1d ago
Use a compression foam and 3M sells a spray adhesive in a can to stick the velvet on.

I still haven't quite figured out how to tune it in '24-tone equal tempermant', yet.

Good guess, but I have a different piece for that theme. Transferable full-auto, but not an original.

This is some hard-core dork shit, comrade.

For when you absolutely have to clear that bank of Feds, a casino full of Borg, or a trench of Jerries.

THERE ARE FOUR
LIGHTSMAGS!!!I love Next-Gen, too. It's literally my number 1 nostalgic "comfort show".
3
u/JMoc1 11h ago
Omg, same!
It’s so good to relax to and it’s high brow. Lower Decks has been scratching that itch lately.

u/dark2023 11h ago edited 8h ago
I also love how many episodes are little morality fables without being silly or heavy-handed about it. Plus, the depiction of Earth as an evolved socialist utopia is cool. I haven't checked out lower decks yet. Sounds like you'd recommend it, though.
Also, do you have a favorite TNG episode (besides 'Darmok' or 'The Inner Light')? Mine is probably 'The Drumhead' or 'Measure of a Man'. They're both just extremely moving and thought-provoking. The question is open to any other fans, btw, so feel free to chime in. Favorite episode and why?
1
u/JMoc1 4h ago
I do recommend it. It’s a comedy but also a love letter to everything about Star Trek and what made it so special.
As for an episode from TNG, Drumhead is great, but I like The Wounded. It’s a small episode but it’s about the effects of war on people and how it can erode judgement in the long term. But the episode reaffirms that while it’s better to take a peaceful stance, being peaceful doesn’t mean being passive. Maxwell was right, but Picard believed in that peace that was so fought for. He would protect it, but he let the Cardassians know that Starfleet would be watching.
It’s just a great episode and sets up DS9.

Have you every shot at cybernetic zombies in a holographic recreation of your favorite Dixon Hill novel?

I didn’t expect gun slinger girl vibes from this sub, but I am here for it.

Yay, you got it. I'm very pleased. I've always thought the setup looked dope and discreet. Plus, it's not like I'm gonna actually EDC a Ps90, so it just needs to look discreet going to/from my car.
For those unfamiliar yet curious about the show, please see below. It's actually really good, though somewhat sad. Basically, it's about an Italian federal agency that conditions orphaned children to turn them into unassuming hitmen.

I'm annoyed no appropriate gifs came up in the embedded gif search on reddit but I'm glad I was on the money for this being the first thing I thought of when I saw violin case and P90 😭

Is that a vintage P228, or the modern M-11A1? How do you like it?
A few years ago I got a Rings blue plastic training gun modeled after the P228 to teach myself safe handling and sighting with both eyes open. I thought it was the most comfortable thing I had ever held. Fast forward to last year when I got my CZ 75. Comparing between the 2 the P228 grip is so awkward and top heavy, guess my ergonomic preference evolved lol. I don’t like how it forces my right hand thumb down, the CZ instead has a thumb shelf that forms very well to where my thumb naturally wants to go.

u/dark2023 1d ago edited 1d ago
It's an old AWB era P228. It was actually inherited from my grandfather. It's alright, I guess. Though I honestly prefer slimmer grips like those found on most single stack pistols or steep grips like a Ruger Mk4, Luger, or Chiappa Rhino. The P228 is not one I'd carry, I'm perfectly happy with a normal G19 clone for that. It's not necessarily bad in any specific way, just kinda mediocre.

You know savior just makes one of these premade
Walmart even sells it

u/dark2023 1d ago
Huh, I wasn't aware of that. Neat. Might even get it for travel, but this style of classic old-school faux leather hardcase is just... iconic (imho).

u/Xandolf505 1d ago
The Desperado setup, very nice, now you just need the dick gun and you’re set.
2
u/dark2023 1d ago edited 1d ago
It's actually not inspired by Desperato but rather an older anime about Italian orphans being turned into brutal child assassins.

u/Jetpack_Attack 1d ago
Henrietta eh?
That's also where I first saw the P90.
Amazing, if a sad and dark story.
6
u/dark2023 1d ago
Yep, that's exactly it.
As a teenager, I loved both Gunslinger Girl and Stargate SG-1. So I knew one day I'd have to get a P90 (or close enough), and now I just need to finish this case and get the SG-1 type sling (but without the 5 point harness, that look mighty uncomfortable).
1
u/Jetpack_Attack 1d ago
It's been a while since I last watched Stargate, I must have forgotten they had the P90 there as well.
It really does fit for the show however.
3
u/dark2023 1d ago
Here's the classic demonstration scene featuring it, but they carried it for 5 or 6 seasons.

u/Toginator 1d ago
For the foam, i would recommend ethefoam. It's the kind of foam that electronics ship in. Stuff cuts well and doesn't break down and it's resistant to almost any solvent.
6
u/dark2023 1d ago
That's basically the exact kind of hard-cell foam I was looking for and planning on using. Plus, that kind of material doesn't hold water/moisture like soft foams can. Super useful, thanks a tonne. Now I have a good name for the foam I want to use, though I'm still gonna line it w/ fabric.

How do you like the P90? My buddy used to have an FS-2000. I hated it.
2
u/dark2023 12h ago
I've never messed with the Fs2000, but I like the P90 a lot. It's not the most practical SMG ever made, especially without the AP ammo. But, it's a lot of fun, and I think anyone curious about it should absolutely go rent one at a range (especially if it's a post-sample auto). The ammo is expensive, though, and it's a picky eater, so you have to run the good stuff.

u/tharussianbear 23h ago
I was looking at music cases to make into transport cases myself just to avoid the whole “single use” doctrine.

PS90 is fun to shoot a few times and then you exhaust yourself loading the idiotic 50rd mags.
"Shit, outta ammo, HOLD ON GOTTA RELOAD! No, no, just wait, I'm almost done... " 35 minutes later
2
u/dark2023 11h ago
They also don't fit in any standard mag carriers or pouches. But you can open the magazine on the flat end, pull the spring and rollers out, dump 45ish rounds in the mag, re-insert the rollers+spring, and close it up. It's still not exactly fast, but it's what I do when my fingers get sore.

My boyfriend has an airsoft p90 and it’s crazy to me how similar it looks to the real thing because of the plastic. Such a neat little gun. How do you like it?
1
u/dark2023 11h ago
Honestly, I love it. I just wish I could afford to shoot it more often. I also wish the special SS190 ammo was freely available and didn't cost $4 a round minimum. Normal ammo is about equivalent to most rifles at around $0.50 per round.

I'd tear out all the existing lining and use new foam to form the shapes inside ... and probably some velcro straps or something to keep all the items in the lid from falling out when you open it.
2
u/dark2023 1d ago edited 1d ago
Wow, that's almost exactly what my original plan was. Total removal, replace with cut-out closed-cell foam, re-line with velveteen/valour, staps up top for mags & pistol. It's like you read my mind, or you've also visited the AKases website.
But now I'm thinking of re-utilizing the compartment behind the gun (for sight-tool, batteries, etc...), using velveteen/valour lined egg foam for the P90 section, and possibly just a velco/molle backing on the skinnier part of the top section to stick mag pouches to.

Reminds me of that one scene us gunslinger girl. Never finished it though.
3
u/dark2023 1d ago
There's a very good reason for that...
...because I really like that show, and it was my inspiration for this case.

If carrying in a music case, make sure to wear a straw hat and nee clothes to stay gray
1
u/CrankySaint 1d ago
Not a bad idea, actually. Cops can search single use containers like obvious gun cases. https://youtube.com/shorts/QaEnU7U2Nls?si=k9srrekf7burOCMk
2
u/dark2023 1d ago
I'm a big fan of "diversion cases". Underfolder AKs fit well in a tennis racket case, as do many folding-stocked rifles and pistol caliber carbines. All pistols and smaller PCCs/SMGs fit well in many tool/drill cases. But instrument cases for weapons are literally timeless. There's even medival accounts of people storing stilettos, short swords, and at least one crossbow in lute cases or more often lute bags/covers.
1
u/theCaitiff 1d ago
I've done a couple of these cases for my guns, the type of foam you want is called "Kaizen Foam". Rather than just being an open cell foam with medium large cells like you get in those cut to fit harbor freight cases, kaizen foam is several thin sheets of small cell foam glued together.
The foam is a tighter denser liner thanks to the small cells, and the laminated layers mean you can have different colored layers. You'll see this in the stupid expensive mechanic's tool boxes where they use the black surface layer and colored inner layers to make it obvious at a glance if you have misplaced a wrench.
You really want to cut inside the outline of the gun and make the pocket too small at first and then do a little trimming as needed to get the fit you want. It's easy to take a little more off but you can't put it back.
1
u/dark2023 11h ago
Extremely helpful advice, thanks a tonne. Your point about size is also why I went with the tiny bit larger viola sized case as opposed to an actual 4/4 size violin case. A P90 will fit in a violin case, but it's an extremely tight fit. I figured I can fill in the slight bit of extra space, but I can't exactly shrink the gun.
