Whenever a show or podcast says that this episode is brought to you by Sponsor, it's actually the opposite. Casual Thought

Without a sponsor, the episode would not air. It is brought to you by the sponsor.

I think it depends, if they're hurting for cash, then sure. But plenty of podcasts and shows can afford to air episodes regardless of a sponsor.

Sure, you can get into the nuance of all that, but the point I'm making is that the episode is brought to you by the sponsor because the sponsor is paying for it.

Without the success of the episode or show, the Sponsor wouldn't attach themselves to it. The success of the episode or show is also nothing to do with the Sponsor. So, the Sponsor is brought to you by the episode or show.

No. Without the money from a sponsor upfront, the thing wouldn’t get made. That is literally what a sponsor does - the advertisement during the show is simply part of the sponsorship agreement made, and is an attempt at return on the financial investment. Works the same way with music festivals, little league team shirts, etc etc. Company gets a trade of “free” advertising during the event (or show) by donating money to make the initial creation happen.

The thing was already being made prior to the sponsor, hence why the sponsor decided to attach themselves to it. It's not as if it wasn't already being made. The sponsor is just piggybacking on the wave of success of it to chuck money at it to sell their stuff to the people who already like the episode or podcast content. Nobody arrives at the podcast because they love the sponsor.

That is simply not what a sponsor is, or how sponsorship works. You are thinking about commercial / ad breaks where people pay for the ad space at a special time, or during a specific show. Sponsorship happens BEFORE the thing is made.

Doesn't matter where it shows up, it's still not bringing the episode or podcast. It's simply saying "ooh, large audience. Let's use that to bring awareness of our product".

You’re confusing a sponsor with an advertiser. Advertisers do exactly what you’re describing. An advertiser and a sponsor are not the same thing even though they are very similar in how they show up in shows and podcasts.

The sponsor is bringing the show to the audience, not the other way around.

It's actually the show or podcast that is being sponsored by the company, not the other way around.

No, the shower thought is that the sponsor is being brought to you, the consumer, by the show/podcast you are listening to. “The sponsor, presented to you by this podcast.”

When they say this episode is brought to you by Sponsor, I can’t help but feel like it’s more of a hostage situation than a sponsorship

That's true. They outsourced the task to someone else and they brought it. They should say bought to you by not brought. People don't talk like that in anything else it's a little shifty and dishonest with the potential to be overly honest at the same time.
Who did your kitchen cabinets? They are gorgeous! My kitchen cabinets were brought to you by my murders for the cartel. When you think of me killing it with my kitchen cabinets, think of me killing for the cartel.

"brought to you by" is just a fancy way of saying "we needed money, so here's an ad."
