Vail still sucks

I still get pissed when I remember they tried to trademark, "Park City". How tf does one even think about doing that shit!?

Definitely knew the Epic Pass would be a problem. Haven't given them a penny since they came up with it. People that gave them money facilitated the machine.

u/markymrk720 10h ago

Yeah…I’ll be switching to the Ikon Pass next year.

Well done, union and PC Mountain as well as props to the skiing community for the overwhelming support of the patrollers in their mission to get Vail to stop screwing their employees in the name of stockholder returns.

3

u/Veganpotter2 13h ago

I hope their stock keeps tanking. Vail tried sweating out the union because they know that the next strike at a big resort would come if they caved to the union.

u/ThrsdayNtefootbalfan 18h ago

So essentially don’t plan a trip for 2028

5

u/Veganpotter2 13h ago

Or before that. Vail is still getting one over on the patrol. That's still not enough money and everyone else on the mountain is paid far less than they deserve too. They're largely easily replaced which wouldn't make a strike super useful.

Vote on January 8th to finalize an agreement that would be in effect through April 2027.

2

u/Veganpotter2 13h ago

Hopefully it includes scheduled raises

Amazing! I hope the union got a fair deal. I’d like to think my video of people chanting “pay your employees” that was on NPR, ABC and the Today show helped 🤣

Thank you for capturing that I cackled when it was on NPR

I wish there were a solution to get Vail out of this town so we can reclaim it..

20

u/Ok_Commercial8093 LOCAL 23h ago

And all it took was being publicly shamed by every major news network for Vail to finally cave.

For those who cannot access Instagram

I don't trust Vail Resorts, b/c they destroyed Vail/BC way back in the 1990s

It seems eerily quiet about the results of the vote and next steps. Anyone hear anything tonight?

Best news I have had today. So happy for the Union and the Public.

Thoughts on how quickly more of the mountain will open up?

If the vote passes today, this is the general plan:

- 1/9: Tombstone
- 1/10: 9990, McConkeys
- 1/11: Pioneer, Thaynes, Peak 5
- 1/12: Dreamcatcher, Dreamscape

Of course, all of this is subject to conditions patrollers find the areas in. There has been little traffic in these areas and a lot of prep is needed. Expect this to shift 1-3 days.

u/Professional-Fun502 11h ago

Given the super sketchy snowpack this year and the fact that none of this was packed down or compressed by normal skier traffic I wouldn't be surprised if mitigation gets pushed into next week.

They're going to be dealing with multi foot wind slabs stacked on top of garbage none of which have had any activity except more snow loading for the last 2 weeks.

1

u/SPAC-ey-McSpacface 14h ago

Imagine how much snow is just sitting up top after the last 2 weeks of storms and nobody skiing. I wouldn't even pass judgement against ski patrol if they felt they needed to do extra "testing".

5

u/SPAC-ey-McSpacface 1d ago

They don't vote until tomorrow, but I don't see why it wouldn't be fairly quickly. There'll be mitigation work to be done obviously to open some lifts, but I imagine much of the place could be opened at this point after the last 10 days of decent snow. Pretty much on the seasonal average right now for this date.

u/Nica811 23h ago

Hold up we still need the vote to go through its looking good but we can't celebrate prematurely

2

u/rhjanowiak 10h ago

If the vote does pass & the Ski Patrol got to work on Friday, how many trails do you think they could open by Monday?

April 2027? That's seriously it?

Hopefully we don't get this same bullshit in just 2 years.

u/FieryAutoCrashes LOCAL 1d ago

At least the deal expires at the end of the ski season next time (maybe a win for Vail on that point - would give them certainty that they avoid a holiday disaster next renewal?). The last deal was three years duration .

2

u/alopz 1d ago

They have been negotiating this deal since April of 2024

3

u/FieryAutoCrashes LOCAL 23h ago

Correct. Because you don’t wait for the deal to expire before you begin negotiating the renewal. The last deal was signed in Jan 2022 for 3 years so presumably had a January X, 25 expiry date. So Vail (presumbaly gets certainty of no strikes for all of 25/26 season and the major holiday period of 26/27 - even if they’re mid negotiation - assuming that starts mid-2026. If I was Vail I’d want that contract end- date aligned with approx season end date or later.

I support the union so hope they got what they asked for and this was a bone they gave PCMR to allow them to save face. But it equally could just have been an upfront demand by Vail the Union had to concede on. We’ll have to wait to see what deal bullet points are.

1

u/SPAC-ey-McSpacface 1d ago

At least the deal expires at the end of the ski season next time

I was shocked when I saw that. Makes me think either the Union didnt do great, or if they did then that was a major concession they gave Vail. Either way I'm surprised the Union agreed to that, for exceedingly obvious reasons. LOL

2

u/FieryAutoCrashes LOCAL 1d ago

Yeah - it would rend to favor Vail considerably

But hey PCMR did stay open till May 1st in 2023……The weather gods could do the funniest thing imaginable and give us an all time 26/27 snow season record and a PCPSPA strike on May Day / International Worker’s Day - May 1st, 2027…..calling it now.

-2

u/Alexkirkp 1d ago

The last deal expired last April, they have been in negotiations since then.

3

u/FieryAutoCrashes LOCAL 23h ago edited 23h ago

Did it? - they agreed it in January 2022 and it was for three years (as reported below by the Park Record at the rime). Not saying you’re wrong - but everything I read was the deal was for the three year period Jan 2022 to Jan 2025.

2

u/Alexkirkp 15h ago

Yeah, it did.

"The bargaining began after the group's contract expired on the last day of April."

Lemme re-write that for you: Hopefully we don't all have to be subjected any more to your obsessive contempt toward an entire group of humans asking for reasonable wages who literally risk their lives setting off hand-deployed explosives from cliffs  to safely open entire mountains so entitled pricks like you can enjoy avalanche-free powder days.

Now that the strike is over maybe you should get off the internet and go find a way to uplift your community, like PCPSPA is doing for ski industry workers everywhere. You'll be less bitter, trust me.

-9

u/SPAC-ey-McSpacface 23h ago edited 23h ago

Lemme correct that for you: I do appreciate ski patrol. Very much. Which is why this weekend I thanked each one I came across at PCMR for working an important job for the agreed upon wage for which they willfully accepted to work for, instead of dishonorably holding an entire town, and literally thousands of innocent vacationers and their crying children hostage in pure misery during Christmas. Christmas.

I do enjoy the Mother Theresa tone of your prose though. You're clearly a virtuous, self-righteous legend in your own mind.

4

u/CBCanuk 20h ago

Thanking scabs for scabbing is in no way appreciating ski patrol. It’s spitting in the face of ski patrol. Don’t get it twisted.

1

u/Denotsyek LOCAL 11h ago

What a shitty way to view people working ski patrol during strike negotiations. Careful not to fall off that ivory tower of yours.

1

u/SPAC-ey-McSpacface 10h ago

Not to mention, how would you even know if they were local or not. Some local patrol arent Union & remained working, some were not local patrol imported from other Vail properties, and some were local Union but didn't agree with striking.

I have no idea which of the 3 buckets they fell into, I just thanked them either way for working.

1

u/Denotsyek LOCAL 6h ago

It's not your job to know the ins and outs of what's happening with a company. You paid for a service. Your concern should be with the level of that service. End of transaction. If the "scabs" are being nice and offering you good service you should be nice to them. Because you're a good person and not a psycho.

u/Intrepid_Parsley2452 17h ago

Pro scab. Self pitying and entitled. Two spaces after a period. Excessive and erratic preposition use. Random colons thrown in all willy nilly. Take a hike, pal! Go back to Nextdoor.
