Finally harvested our turmeric!

10 lbs worth!! We initially thought it was a dahlia bulb and then quickly realized it definitely was not a dahlia bulb haha. Once it flowered it was easy to tell what it was but for a good while it was our mystery plant on the farm.

Rare seeds has the traditional yellow turmeric and even has blue turmeric. I think they are out of stock currently but I know that’s one place that carries them.

I like to make golden milk with it (turmeric, cinnamon and milk slowly heated so it doesn’t burn). Juicing it is always nice too, in shot form or adding it with another fruit or veggie.

What zone are you in? I would love to grow turmeric but not sure it would thrive in my climate.

Nice!! Looks beautiful! How do you plan to prep/store it long-term?

That’s a great question. So far we are keeping them covered in the cooler, we washed all of the dirt off which we probably shouldn’t have done right away. First time growing it so not totally sure on the curing process. I’ll have to do a bit of research!

Yeah, I wonder if they’re like other tubers that can be left a little dirty, for the sake of staying dry whereas moisture from washing will cause rot.

I also wonder if they need to be heat cured. I am doubtful - but definitely at least dry.

I hope they last! Or else you’re gonna need to drink a LOT of turmeric juice. It’s a beautiful bounty! Food dehydrator and grind?

That’s what I was thinking. We harvested tonssss of sweet potatoes in October and cured them correctly and those are still going strong but after we washed the turmeric we were like dang, probably shouldn’t have done that. Oh well. I’d definitely try a dehydrator! Or yes tons of turmeric juice. 🧃
